It's not bad... and boasts the record for worst modern film score recording!

Well there is that but the material itself is entertaining. Perhaps the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra can do a re-recording of it someday.

Alien by Jerry Goldsmith: Gripping stuff. I love how Jerry first lulls you to sense of calm with his depiction of the marvel and awe of the space and then proceeds the scare the living daylights out of you.

It's a bittersweet score from a quirky Dick Lester movie, about a older Robin of Sherwood coming out of retirement. It stars 0-0-sheven himshelf, Sean Connery, with fine support from Robert Shaw, and Nicol Williamson. It's nicely shot by David Watkin.

Oh I am familiar with the film. Just didn't get a chance to watch it, or hear the score.

:music: Dawn of the Planet of the Apes by Michael Giacchino. For whatever reason, this is one of my favourite cues of the entire score. I just love those creepy choral colours and boiling tension. It's very stripped-down, but there's more going on in there than it seems.

During my watch of the movie I thought the score was too reliant on the increasingly repetitious ape suspense motif, needless to say I wasn't really a fan. I prefer the much lighter score from the first movie actually. Possibly because it's a better watch than the rather grave followup. Having listened to the cue you linked above, I don't feel particularly compelled to sample more tracks from the album unfortunately.

Quintus - still trying with Gia. Probably for nothing.

I didn't particularly like the movie, and I also didn't like the first one either. They were merely serviceable. Giacchino's score is indeed based around a collection of very simple motifs (four of them) and it's not exactly the smoothest of listening experiences. So I understand why you might not like it. I became a fan of his after watching Lost. And I always thought he developed a very unique sound and mood (later developed in his Let Me In and Apes movies):

Karol - who likes suspense cues like this very much

Very intersting score from a compositional standpoint.  Can't remember where but I read Shire talking about it and the procedures he used.

It was probably me quoting from On the Track, which has an interview with Shire, plus two pages of the Main Title in condensed score and a twelve tone matrix.

Shame.

It's just not a musical niche I was ever exposed to by chance other than those few fragments, and I've never felt inclined to take the time to explore all of it.

The Blue Max (Tadlow Re-recording) by Jerry Goldsmith: The short version: It's awesome! For a longer one read HERE.

Angela's Ashes by John Williams: One of the most sublime things the man has ever composed. The album is also expertly put together as the film's score is mostly comprised of very short cues that Williams elegantly combines for a beautiful listening experience.

If you ever the chance to watch the THE BLUE MAX - the aerial battles are stunning - take note how the first shot the score enters shows George Peppard glancing towards the sky eyeing the biplanes. Goldsmith little flute call works practically like a siren song. It's a simple but brilliant way to set off the proceedings.

More of GODS OF EGYPT now. It's uneven but until the last third i found quite a few worthy moments. Best blockbuster score (by a non-fossil) in quite some time, at least from  technical standpoint.

Gods of Egypt.

Regardless of how terrible the film apparently is, Beltrami's score is fairly good. It hops between slightly forgettable underscore and relatively interesting action. His style has always struck me as rather sparse (as far as you can get from the clone wall of sound) and it feels like that works here, as the upbeat parts really feel like they stand out.

Beltrami's themes are a bit 'meh' though.

Stargate - David Arnold

It's still a grand debut score for Arnold. It's amazing to see how accomplished his style is from the get-go and how his voice has evolved over two decades. The main theme is so malleable and enjoyable, and I never get tired of listening to it. While Joel Goldsmith took over scoring duties for "Stargate SG-1", I would've liked to see how Arnold would've scored the series himself.

This is the guy who should score the Star Wars spin-offs. He did a wonderful job expanding Gregson-Williams' Aslan theme in Voyage of the Dawn Treader, now imagine him playing with JW's Star Wars themes.

Everyone else seems to think David Arnold is great except for Roland Emmerich.

I wonder what broke their fruitful big blockbuster orchestral score relationship.

Because Wanker and Kloser don't cut it Roland! They really don't!

John Williams is not to blame!

Plus I have to say I really enjoy The Patriot score. The bombastic flag waving finale is just a hoot.

I love The Patriot.  It's one of my personal favorite Williams scores and I prefer it to all of the David Arnold/Emmerich scores but it's a shame that it ended such a solid collaboration.

Curiously Emmerich never worked with Arnold after that.
