...I think Elfman's masterpiece for a comic hero, is Batman Returns.

Tru, dat.

I once heard a rumour that someone called John Williams was lined up to score HULK. Is there any truth in this?

Mission Impossible V Rogue Nation - Joe Kraemer

I'm trying to listen to all Mission Impossible scores before the new one comes out. Not in any order either.

I think Rogue Nation is my favorite though ultimately.  the build up and transition into the theme at 2:37 is so fun

The best action track of 2015!

Mission Impossible Fallout - Lorne Balfe

I wouldn't say it's bad, it's just not as memorable as Rogue Nation's.  Also it sounds way too much like Zimmer's batman's.  If I want to listen to something so in your face, I want it to be a little bit more fun.  It's just way too serious sounding.  But that's right for the film (which was amazing)

I kept hearing Bane's theme:

And this reminded me of the end of The Dark Knight:

Although I like JNH's "epic" sound (WATERWORLD; MALIFICENT; WYATT EARP), I'm more into his "gritty, urban" stuff (THE SAINT OF FORT WASHINGTON; FALLING DOWN; FLATLINERS).

GRAND CANYON was, is, and always shall be my favourite JNH score.

That's the perfect way to consider Fallout: Amazing film, pretty good to great score. It's just that it isn't as good as Rogue Nation.

I've always loved this Mancina score, but didn't know there was a digital score-only release as well. Listening to it now, and it's superb.

It's a drama score? Found it at spotify.

I'll trust you and listen to it later.

Sideways (Original Motion Picture Score) - Album by Rolfe Kent | Spotify

Great score for this time of year. I'm sitting in the garden, enjoying the last wisps of daylight, glass of wine in hand (mandatory, as it is for any experience derived from the film and its associated material).

Actually, I might watch the film later. Oh no, that means more wine. Oh no.

Sure is, LSH. Impressed to see you have a drink on a weekend. It's usually weekdays.

Yeah, when I worked in hospitality it was like that. My new job has no fixed structure. My days off are different week to week. Regardless, I've always been an opportunist!

I just listened to this too.

Good loungy music to spend your leisure time...

The whole score is like source cues.

I love this score. This is the kind of music I mostly listen to these days -- soothing, calm, ethereal.

It's really good late-flowering Horner.

The film is so, so sad...

There is a reason for asking this:

Anyone can recommend the best mystery-thriller scores of the last - let's say - 10 years?

I can think of three...

Hans Zimmer & Co - Blade Runner 2049

Ennio Morricone - The Hateful 8

Danny Elfman - The Girl on the Train

  • The Hateful Eight as mentionned before
  • Knives Out and Glass Onion both by Nathan Johnson
  • Death on the Nile and Murder on the Orient Express by Patrick Doyle
  • Sicario

I just listened to it. Too much athematic drone music with much synth.

Not the style I had in mind really. I prefer orchestral effects. But thanks again for the recommendation.

I'm just listening.

This is what I had in mind, with orchestral effects I mean, but I find the score interesting as I said.

If there was something along the lines of this, but even better or great, it would be ideal.

I'm curious:

This was an unusual choice of yours. Do you really consider this one of the best mystery-thriller scores of the last 10 years?

And could you explain why?

I usually don't care for most of JNH's urban thriller scores, but this one was quite effective. Nice surprise.

A nice and charming effort from JW. I think this album would go well in a playlist with Sabrina and Stepmom.
