I live within driving distance of L.A. (it's 6 hours, if that counts as "driving distance") and I think I might try to swing by again this year. Last year's was the event of a lifetime. I don't know if it can be topped, but I'm sure John can match it.

I keep planning to make a trip to L.A. to see him but it has yet to materialize and by the looks of it, it sadly won't be happening any time soon.

I'm afraid my adventure in Ft. Worth will be my only time seeing the maestro.

Update from the Bowl website:

"Five-time Academy Award-winner and renowned composer John Williams returns for his annual weekend, with a program of great film music including selections from some of his most popular scores, that is guaranteed to delight, amaze, entertain and more. This year, Academy Award-winning actor Morgan Freeman makes a special appearance to narrate Williams’ delightful Suite from The Reivers. It's a night of movie magic you won’t want to miss!"

Highly looking forward to this.

August 20th is Boston Pops Film Night at Tanglewood. I'll be back in Massachusetts visiting family around my birthday then, so I will most likely be attending. I fly back to California on the next day, so I'll be catching the Bowl concert the following weekend. Should be pretty awesome!

Despite nearing 80 years of age, Williams moved with the exuberance and passion of a young man, yet led the Philharmonic with the wisdom of one whose life has revolved around music for many decades. He perfectly dictated the beat, tempo, dynamics and articulation with his graceful, swaying hands, letting the music surround him and becoming one with the orchestra.

The selection of music was beautiful, with many themes reminiscent of his more famous pieces. If you’ve watched more than one of his films, you already know what John Williams thinks love, regret, betrayal, passion, and danger sound like. Despite having never heard these songs before, the mind still recognized those emotions as if having heard them a hundred times before.

Sure enough, at the end of the second half of the concert, Williams started with "The Asteroid Field," from Empire, and a few lightsabers clicked on. Then Princess Leia's theme. More lightsabers. And then... the main Star Wars theme accompanied by film clips... and the place went MAD in the best possible way. All those lightsabers went on. Everyone was laughing and cheering and if you could have bottled the love and enthusiasm in that audience, you could have made a fortune. It was amazing. I've been to a lot of John Williams concerts, but holy smoke, I've never quite seen anything like this.
