What is the last video game you played?

I knew Drax had bandwidth limits in Australia, but I had no idea things were that bad in Canada.

Unless you're just on some ancient plan and haven't bothered to change to your town's competition in a while?

I could change it to unlimited but I almost never use the 150GB.  Videogames use all the time I'd use for Netflix .Occasionally I have a big file download that's the only issue

If you just bothered to ring them up and ask to be put through to retentions they'd likely put you on unlimited usage cheaper than what you're paying for a 150gb cap. As it stands, you're basically an ISP's favourite kind of customer!

Many of my coworkers live in a town that offers Comcast for cable or Verizon for FiOS.  Most of them sign up as a "new customer" with one of them, get the new customer rate for 2 years, cancel and sign up with the other one for 2 years at their "new customer" rate, then switch back as a "new customer" with the other place, etc, forever.  So it's like $40-50/month or whatever.  And all the plans are unlimited bandwidth.  I haven't heard of any provider in American ever doing capped bandwidth plans (I'm sure they exist, I've just literally never heard anyone mention one once)

In my small town we only have one option - Charter - so I just pay $65/month without any other options.  Before we were married I canceled once and had Marcy be the "new customer" when she had a different last name, and we saved a crapton of money.  That was in the town we used to live in though.  Here I just called up after our rates jacked up after the first 2 years and they lowered it for me for another year.  Either way, it's completely unlimited bandwidth.

Of course the question is if they secretly throttle you after a certain point.  I’ve had that happen with a previous ISP.  I called and complained and they took off the throttle without ever acknowledging it actually was a thing.

I stumbled upon this video about Dragon Quest's timeline and enjoyed watching it, despite not having played any of these games since the first one on the NES

It's by that Angry Video Game Nerd guy, but not playing that persona.  I clicked through the video list for the channel, and didn't see any other similar videos about any other video game series, unfortunately.  Maybe I didn't scroll back enough?

He did one about movie titles and one about Zelda years ago, those ones have actual passion behind it. This new one was written by other people, the guy has never even played any of the games.

I used to enjoy AVGN, didn't realize the show never ended and he's still making them

He did the classic "retire the character and then bring back them back two years later 'for the fans'" trick

Yeah, other people have been writing it for him for 5 or so years now and he doesn't even put any energy into moving the camera anymore.

This video made me unsubscribe from the channel. You could tell he doesn't give two shits about Dragon Quest and was just paid to do the video.

You can also tell he's just totally burnt out with this stuff. Which begs the question...when you retire from being a Youtuber, what do you do next with your life until you can retire?

James' YouTube channel, Cinemassacre, is decent. He's mostly moved on from gaming stuff, and makes a lot of movie related content. He's basically exactly like us, he's of our age in relation to cinema.

Anybody here use a Sound Bar for the main gaming TV instead of a traditional receiver/speaker setup (or the TV's built in speaker)?

If so, have you ever had any sound lag issues?

I have a 5.1 SB setup, No lag that I could notice, though sometimes the audio will go cut out for a second, or the sound portion will shut down.

We own an LG 55" TV and we use a Yamaha YAS107 soundbar, placed in front of the TV. They are connected with the optical cable that came with the soundbar and we have zero lag. This is our only TV, so it has our media watching plus gaming: Switch, Wii, GC, N64, and Raspberry Pi.

I used to have a cheap refurbished Sony soundbar that only connected via RCA cables. The lag was quite bad.

Great, thanks.

Thinking about getting a soundbar for our old TV that we put in the basement when we got the new TV for the living room

I would like to get a wireless sub to place behind us in the living room. In the summer, our TV and air conditioner are right next to each other. It's a deafening duel of decibels. This particular soundbar can accommodate wireless satellite speakers like that.

Anybody else ever check out the retronauts podcast? I've been enjoying their deep dives into Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Mana, and SaGa games so far

BTW, there's no reason you ever have to see the first post on a page on JWFan, or any IPBoard forum, more than once. Instead of clicking the page number to open the thread, if you click the little icon to the left of the thread title, it brings you directly to the first new post in the thread you haven't read yet

There's also a setting in your individual user setting that makes this what happens is you click a thread's title, too.

So I ended up enjoying my time with Battlefront 2. The highest grade sniper rifle is sooo satisfying,  the kick felt so powerful that I would often instinctively pull the mouse up in recoil and mess up my shots!

That said, after uninstalling the game, I don't feel compelled to really play it again...though the game was fun and easy to pick up and play, it's a little too basic and repetitive in a way that got tiring after a while. As I played the same maps in the same modes, I started to recognize all the same choke points, the same tide turns, and same general contour of most matches.

It did spark an interest in online shooters for me, though. I bought Death Stranding on sale, but unfortunately my computer can't run it, so I'm thinking of indulging my fantasies as an 11 year old whose family couldn’t afford Internet in the 2000s and pick up the Master Chief Collection. Anyone here play it on PC?

How do you make dinosaur robots boring???

IKR? A boring by the numbers cliché story and some hilariously bad dialogue to boot. Just never understood the hype of that game.

I recall it took a bit of getting into, but I ended up really loving my time with Horizon. The "David and Goliath" battles in that game were badass, the combat felt really satisfying and polished once you got all your shit up to spec. Critics make a lot of Shadow of the Colossus, but I personally find the monster fighting encounters in Horizon to be much more fun and spectacular than in that other big luvvie Japanese entry. Guerilla normally make quite dull yet mechanically interesting games, but I definitely think they found their sweet spot with Dino Riders: The Video Game; in fact for all its flaws (crappy sidequests being one), I'd say I enjoyed it about as much as TLOU2. Looking forward to the sequel, and I actually wouldn't mind seeing a hokey sci-fi flick spinoff at some point.
