When I had to choose between the human-minded robot and the helper robot, I chose to kill the human one because the helper one got me through locked doors like a good little puppy dog. I also chose to kill Simon 2, and I decided to destroy the WAU at the Alpha site.

Posted

I can't remember which choices I made. Do you know if they have real consequences on the ending? I can't remember.

Posted

I'm sure they just yield alternate dialogue sequences. Not destroying the WAU I imagine would let Simon keep his left hand.

Posted

Which was his wanking hand? There's going to be nothing else to do for eternity.

Posted

Too bad Catherine ain't around anymore to give him some ASMR JOI, assuming Simon is even equipped in his robot suit. His body was a woman in a diving suit, effectively making him a cyborg.

Brilliant original storyline. Or I always assumed it wasn't adapted from something else. I don't think Asimov wrote this one.

I have a friend who's an ex work colleague, older chook, about 60, she loves cerebral science fiction movies and shows that mull over all the big meaning of life stuff – if she ever wanted to play just one video game in her life, I'd recommend her SOMA, advise her to play it in Safe Mode, and she'd be set. Perfect game for normies who like their sci-fi, really.

Started playing this today after picking up the whole trilogy for only $20 from the PS Store.

Other than the fact that Lara's character model might be the most insanely gorgeous one I've ever seen in a video game aside from maybe Chloe in Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, this game felt familiar. The menus, interfaces, and HUDs looked almost identical to those in Batman: Arkham Asylum! That just makes this game feel so PS3, an era I'm not all that nostalgic for. But at least TR doesn't share those Batman games' annoying thing where you cross rooms and enter/exit buildings and it needs time to load. The PS4 era nuked that old gaming quirk and made the experience feel more seamless.

It's also funny that Lara gets hungry and needs to hunt for food, like a good little cave lady she is. Will video game characters feel the urge to poo next? Imagine that as a VR experience.

Rockstar likes to do that sort of thing in their boring open world games I eventually stop playing. Gotta make sure your gangbanger character eats and works out. Why would I want to do that in a video game?

I just play old LucasArts games that I can kill an hour with and beat in that amount of time. I just beat Jedi Power Battles, which I was never able to do before when I had it for the Playstation, and now I'm about to finish The Clone Wars.

Posted

Finished Hogwarts and loved it, it has the rare honour of being an open world game I actually finished. Decided to use Resident Evil 2 remake as a palate cleanser, but after an evening's session I think I've bounced off it and I'll probably just uninstall. Feels too old hat to me now. Maybe Silent Hill 2 instead, at some point.

Just finished Tomb Raider, and now starting:

A lot less Batman: Arkham Asylum and more its own thing. They tweaked Lara's face in this one where she almost resembles Sienna Miller in some cutscenes. Graphics and gameplay are exceptional. Games from this mid-2010s era have aged well.

I'm not a fan of this era of Tomb Raider, which is basically Uncharted with a nicer arse and gore. Certainly well made enough in their own right - decent action adventure games, nowt wrong with that. But these are a big departure from the Core Design Tomb Raider of the 90s which made the name what it is. Those original releases were vast and lonely platform puzzlers to get lost in, much more evocative of actual tomb raiding. Nowadays it's all optional. Lame.

Posted

I haven't played any of the 90s TR games aside from a single-level demo of Tomb Raider III from one of those PC gaming magazines my dad would get. I'll probably get around to them at some point since they're all remastered.

The 2010s games are similar to the Uncharteds superficially, but they have none of the sense of romantic adventure that made up the personality of those Nathan Drake games. Instead they're essentially hot babe goes on a murdering spree while hunting for treasure and grim underscore plays. Still within the sweet spot regions for me.

The most recent one, with the scary black panther in the jungle, I put down halfway through. The first and only Tomb Raider I never finished. It's a good game, but I was just going through the motions.

I'm committing to finishing every RE game after I've finished the TR survivor trilogy.

I find the ammo economy too stressful. Does it sort itself out early on? Also, these days the puzzles in the police station feel like something out of Myst.

I played the original Resi 2 back in the day and loved it, but I was also much more patient with roadblock puzzles back then.

I've only played 7 and 8, but I guess I'll find out about the earlier ones since I have all the remakes, plus 5 and 6.

7 and 8 are mostly stingy, but you are rewarded for your troubles as the games progress, especially in 8.

Is that Shadow of the Tomb Raider? I'll find out soon when I'm up to it. Fans slammed that one for a number of reasons, but I'll finish it anyway.

I recently finished this myself. Great game that was in my backlog for a couple years.  Thoroughly enjoyed getting to 100% even though I never cared for the Potter books or films.

Rise of the Tomb Raider is so full of side quests that its predecessor didn't have, it's easy to get lost in it all. This game is more open-worldish than I expected, which is okay since there's a linear story to follow, but those side quests have a way of breaking the pace. However they come with rewards like weapons, tools, and inventory upgrades, so they're hard to ignore.

Posted

Just finished it. I'm sure this was a shorter game than its predecessor. Only took me 15 hours to beat it, while the main story of the first game took me about 20 hours.

I'll start Shadow of the Tomb Raider when my eyes recover.

If you had to get rid of all your video games and could keep only one, what would it be?

The most recent game I've played is Tomb Raider (on a Sega Saturn in August 1998).

The game I've played most recently is Atic Atac (for ZX Spectrum, last month).

A slower gaming experience that demands more concentration and brain power than its two more combat-heavy predecessors. I dunno, classic Lara fans probably dig this one more. And the big jaguar was easy as piss, and @Quintus gave up after that? I persevered and made Lara murder that big cat and wear its skin.

I killed it but gave up due to being bored with the gameplay formula.

Finished the main story of Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and it was bafflingly short. Maybe because I missed all the optional tombs? They were pretty well hidden away, so I can go back and finish those if I hit "continue". The complaints against this entry are overblown. She does all the same shit, and it features some cool dramatic highlights in its cutscenes.

Strange they haven't made another Tomb Raider game since this one. It's been seven years! Did the company fold? Do developers even make new games anymore or do they just remaster old ones for new generation consoles? I'd love to play a few more adventures featuring Survivor Lara with Camilla Luddington voicing her. But if you look at Reddit, they all seem to hate her for whatever reason. Do they just harbour an irrational dislike towards kick-ass babes on that forum? Anyhow, bring her back.

I believe Square Enix, the publisher, sold the IP years ago. They liquidated all their American assets. The developer, Crystal Dynamics, was brought on years ago by Microsoft to help develop the new Perfect Dark game that’s been in limbo forever.

You should play the Uncharted games if you’re looking for more Indiana Jones style adventure. I hear the new Indiana Jones game is good too.

I've already played them.

After finishing the story to SOTTR, I decided to embark on a post-game treasure hunt and beat all the challenge tombs, and the most amusing thing about the experience is Lara's interactions with the locals and how much of a kind sweetheart she is. I always had the impression from the early Lara years in the 90s and 2000s that she was something of a scoundrel and probably couldn't give a toss about anyone else other than her own loot collection. But Survivor Lara is such a soft-spoken goodie two-shoes except when she's mowing down Trinity mercenaries with machine guns and explosive projectiles, and stabbing disarmed guys in cold blood.

Are there any other games alike Uncharted, Tomb Raider and The Great Circle anyone can recommend?

Posted

A Google search brings up no other games like those.

Once the Giant Circle game is out on PS5 and I've played it, that's it. No other AAA adventure games like them.

Posted

I just bought God of War 2018 and Phasmophobia from the PS Shop on special. I've never played a GOW game before, but this one might give me my action adventure fix. I plan on restarting Alien Isolation as my next game anyway since I never finished it back in 2022 when I first bought it.

My backlog of games is friggin enormous. I probably won't even finish them all within this year.

Posted

Think of it as TLOU2: Greece. It was very well made, but it dragged towards the end. I'm quite harsh on it though, even though I recognise it's a superbly crafted adventure.  I didn't play Ragnarok.

Posted

Ragnarok is on special too, but still a bit too dear at $62. I've got my eye on GOW3, it's at $24.95, but it'll probably go on special soon.

Posted

I've lost count of the number of times I've restarted Alien Isolation. I piss myself off.

I'm a persistent bastard. There was a bit in Tomb Raider 2013 where I swear I died about 30 times until I beat the scene and could finally progress. I was becoming convinced I'd hit upon a game glitch and was almost ready to shut it off and call it a loss, but somehow at some point, I beat that mercenary shithead with a well-timed QTE button mash. I'm sure I'll take on that alien bitch with gusto like I did with all those SOMA freaks, even if it kills me with a heart attack.

Chances are you've probably already played this, but this was the first one to come to mind.  One of my favorites, actually. :)

Oh yeah that one's only cheap on the PS Store, but I passed because the reviews weren't great. You reckon it's good?

Btw Hogwarts Legacy: Deluxe Edition was only about $30, so I bought that. Might as well, huh.

Plus Star Wars: Fallen Order and Jedi Survivor. Cheap as chips right now.

Chances are I'll be dead before I can even finish all of these, but I'll try.

Only cost £3.69 in a digital sale so I thought why not.

I played the free demo lf that in 2022 but didn't buy the full thing until recently when it was on special. It's very QTE but entertaining.

Spent a few hours on Hogwarts Legacy, and I'm already growing impatient with it. There's not much combat, puzzles are absent, the characters are annoying, you can't leap off a ledge to your death and hear someone say "Oh god! No!", and there's too much fetch questing.

I'll give it a fair go and see if it improves. I usually like having a good balance of puzzles and fighting hordes of enemies, which this game seems to lack. So far it's mostly just a lot of mindless multiple choice chitchat with NPCs and QTE moments.

The environments are nice though, and I'm running this in Performance mode. I'm glad I didn't pay much for this bland thing.

I mean, it's a game about teens in a school so it wouldn't have that much combats, fights, etc. Which is one of the reasons I avoided this game so far (the other is that I'm kinda tired of HP in my adult age).

Anyway, picked up Silent Hill 2 Remake. Never played a game from the series, or something in that genre, but after seeing the news about the next game being so dark and so disturbing that it may not even be released in Australia I was really curious. Besides, I was home alone with my pets for an entire week so it'd be cool to play a horror game at night with the entire house darkened.

But I haven't seen anything too dark and disturbing yet... Even though the game's atmosphere is top notch.
