Nice job!  I don't remember how many tries it took me, but it was a lot!

I got all the dreamers now, just gotta face the Hollow Knight, get the base ending, and then go get the essences for the White Palace and Kingsoul.

Posted

Took me a while to get 1800 essence for my second playthrough.  Some of the bosses that give out lots of essence are much harder than others

Eh that just means they take more hits but the strategiess stay the same

Nice dude, congrats!  I think I was at like 60 hours my first time lol

Been playing StarCraft Mass Recall, the fan remake of StarCraft 1 in the StarCraft II engine.

Currently about halfway through Episode VI of Brood War. Every time I tried to play StarCraft 1 previously I gave up somewhere around Episode II or III.

The mod is definitely a lot more enjoyable than the original game, the quality of life interface improvements are huge.

I plan to play StarCraft II next, I played Wings of Liberty once many years ago but I basically never touched the other two campaigns

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective

Holy shit!  The game is so cool!  I've never played an Ace Attorney game, but know this was made by the same guy, and now I want to play those too.

For those who don't know anything about it, you play as the ghost of a guy who has just died, and have to use your ghost powers to solve your own murder, and save the lives of others targeted by the same assassin who has killed you.  You do so by interacting with objects in the environment, and winding back time by 4 minutes occasionally.

I'm about 4 chapters in so far, and I've loved every night of play so far (it's really easy to play a chapter, you get a screen asking if you want to save and quit, and then just play the next chapter the next night).  Already looking forward to tonight's chapter very much.

Who else on JWFan has played this?

Oh that sounds really cool. I've never played Ace Attorney but I have played Danganronpa which I've heard is similar.

Anyone else played Half-Life² on PC? Looks great on my new monitor.

This game has always looked graphically impressive, it's honestly shocking that this released the same year as other acclaimed titles like Halo 2. There's simply no comparison.

There was a video game I really liked on the iphone that no longer works.  It required the devs update it but it was no longer in the app store so my only option was to delete it.  Luckily, I found it on steam for only $7!

RCT Classic on my iPhone. The zoom-out visual glitches from the Android version don’t affect this version. This is my buildout of Pokey Park.

IMG_1739.jpeg

Nothing I did here was particularly impressive and all rides aside from the Cheshire Cats are off-the-shelf flats, but for the limited amount of space to work with, where other players usually stack everything up unrealistically and spam launched freefalls to meet the park value goal, it turned out pretty charming and quasi-realistic. I’ll fiddle with it and probably alter the exterior of The Haunted Manor, which bares no resemblance to any real-life theme park attraction.

Just been dicking around with PC Part Picker since I'm peaking some interest in building my own computer. It seems more expensive than I expected, especially since I'm trying to future proof it with a higher power supply and an advanced GPU (some of these newer games won't even let you deactive Ray Tracing), even though I only use a 1080p 24-inch monitor. I didn't go for a 27-inch 1440p monitor, too big for my desk.

Comments regarding compatability and other suggestions welcome:

Get an AMD B650 PCIe 5.0 motherboard and aim for a Ryzen 7600 upwards for your CPU. You want to have an Nvidia GPU for their features (DLSS, strong RT performance etc). Look for an RTX 5060 ti upwards but make sure it has 16GB minimum. Avoid ALL 8gb GPUs!! Go Radeon instead if you want but you'll always be playing catch-up to Nvidia because of the features. Get yourself 32gb of DDR5 (a set of two 16gb sticks).

This will be more powerful than a PS5 Pro and obviously a bit more expensive to build, but the savings come later with the games and software and the price differences are massive. Get yourself out of the robbery Playstation ecosystem and you'll never go back. Also, buy an Xbox pad and install an app called Controller Companion on Steam. You'll be able to operate your whole PC with a controller, should you ever want to do PC couch gaming like I do. Xbox pads work out of the box on PC nowadays.

Yeah I'll probably switch the GPU to the RTX 5060 if it's available. Some bloke on YT was banging on about how that's the best one. Those cards are in a damn shortage right now. My old gaming laptop from five years ago has an RTX 2060, which handles all games from the 2010s really well, but it won't do shit for modern stuff. And my 1080p monitor should make things nice and smooth anyway.

This will just be at my desk. The PS5 will stay in the loungeroom. My Steam library is a near replication of my PS library.

I presently use a PS DualSense for the laptop, I like the ergonomics of it, so I'm sticking with that for third-person games.

Posted

The 5060 or the ti version? Whatever you do don't buy an 8gb card.

Posted

I gotta figure out these different versions of the GPU.

I'm going for the 1000w power supply just to give it some headroom. 750w seemed alright, but you're not paying much more for greater power.

Posted

1000w is funny overkill for 1080p but okay. I run games in a mix of 1440p and 2160p with a 4070 ti Super and my psu is 850w with headroom.

Posted

Given how advanced games like RE9 and Silent Hill f are promising to be, I thought I might as well go big, despite being a bit behind the times in resolution. My eyes aren't what they used to be, so 1080p looks about right.

Posted

Don't worry, a 5060 ti @1080p will belittle the sort of games you play, and with the RT toggles enabled.

The only bit that freaks me out is physically installing the CPU onto the motherboard. Gotta be really careful with that. The rest seems fairly straight forward. I need to be aware of the size of the case, particularly the height, because my desk has a hutch, which limits the height of the tower, but I can afford some width to play around with.

Since you use your PC in the loungeroom, do you use HDMI or Displayport? I use Thunderbolt 3 to Displayport for my laptop and monitor. And of course just plain old HDMI for my PS5 to TV.

Posted

I just amended the build with an Asus RTX 5060 ti GPU, plus I replaced the CPU with one without its own cooler fan, and added a separate cooler fan that was a bitch to find because so many of them were incompatible with the case I chose. But that case has an imporant feature, which is its height, since I need one that's just a bit below 42.5cm due to the limitations of my desk as a result of that hutch. The case depth is only just going to fit if you account for the cables sticking out the back.

I'll have to keep referring back to videos like these to help me in the building and installation processes:

Playing Batman Arkham Origins on PC after having finished the main campaign of Arkham Knight on PlayStation. Origins being exclusive to PC nowadays is what recently revived my interest in PC gaming and this title works fine on my RTX 2060. In fact, I think I prefer this game to Arkham Knight because it's a lot slower and nowhere near as urgent or break-neck. It's probably aged better because there aren't any stupid tank battles.

I'm halfway through Elden Ring.

Did you go Ryzen? Look for the tiny little triangle on one corner of the CPU chip and match if it with the slot. Do a little thin cross shape with the coolant liquid, don't go mad with it. Installing the processor is definitely the tricky part of a build, but it's the cooler fitting that can cause the stress as sometimes the clips are absolutely terrible designs.

I'm on a dual display setup in the lounge, meaning I flick between them depending on where I'm sat. PC monitor at the desk is displayport, and a high speed HDMI for the big telly which carries 120hz HDR 10bit @4k signal. I made a controller shortcut so I just press two buttons at the same and the image switches back and forth.

Oh I haven't bought anything yet, other than a Samsung T7 2TB SSD external drive to store all my Steam games, so I'll continue to use my old HP Omen laptop with its RTX 2060 for the time being. The logistics of building a PC are just too much for me at the moment, especially when I've got a few other things occupying my time and energy, which will probably be resolved by next year. Some older games play straight off the external SSD really well, but newer ones like the Resident Evil remakes, Control, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider, I can just move back and forth to my laptop within minutes.

I'm anticipating Silent Hill f, so I pre-ordered that on PlayStation, and I'll play Silent Hill 2 on that first, probably within the next month.

Posted

I enjoy the process, it takes me a few hours but once it's complete and it all boots up fine there's a nice sense of satisfaction to be felt.

Chances are this old gaming laptop will die of natural causes within the next couple of years, so best to let it do what it was meant to do before I go building a new machine.

Desperately trying to find time to finish playing Ghost Trick before Silksong drops this week

Posted

The Last of Us Part I didn't kill my laptop like I thought it would. In fact, it handled the game on Low/Medium settings really well. No FPS drops or stuttering, and the GPU held steady at 76ºC, keeping the fans busy. Helped me forget that awful show.

Been playing Xenoblade Chronicles X but so far it's not really what I expected or even wanted.  The characters and the main hero faction aren't sympathetic or likable and the cutscenes/dialogue are terribly paced (LONG pauses between each line).

The music is intermittently good but has a lot of what I call "Xbox 360 music" (Hans Zimmer style "world music" over bland drumming, vaguely techno edge).  It doesn't have any of the same melodic, overwhelming emotional appeal of Xenoblade 3.

Maybe it'll get better though.  I just got the mech and you're supposed to be able to fly anywhere eventually

This one has aged well. A change of pace from all that Last of Ussing, and it doesn't put my laptop on the edge of self-destructing, even though that newer game seems to handle well on this old dog of a computer of mine.

Played an hour. Got the spear attack and opened the new version of the stag expressway (forget the real name). Everything is fantastic so far!

The lack of

downslash/regular pogo

has been a bit brutal so far ngl.

4 hours into Silksong now.

I've explored pretty thoroughly Moss Grotto, Mosshome, The Marrow, and Deep Docks.  I've got the map, spear attack, dash, throwing knives, and just got traps.  I have charms for compass, extra shards, rosarie collection, damage gives silk, lava immunity, i think something else I'm forgetting.  I got half a silk spool and a silk heart I think it was called, don't really understand how that works.  Have seen mask shards for sale and behind locked doors but haven't gotten any yet.  Got some quests and did them all except finding 5 fleas (found 2 so far).  Finding the mossberries was fun.

Everything is fun.  It's basically just Hollow Knight again, but different.  Lots of similarities, tons of differences.  All good so far!

Right now I have no idea where to go next.  I've been to one area above Deep Docks, but it involved a lot of diving into those orange pumpkin-looking things you can bounce off of to get to new areas, but I was dying along there so haven't gone back.  I think I'm supposed to fight a boss in Deep Docks but don't know where they could be.  Have seen a lot of doors I can't open yet.

It's all great so far.  @Little Ghost I don't miss the pogo at all, the new diagonal downward dash is cool!

LOL the very next time I played I found Lace pretty easily.  She kicked my ass a bunch of times until I gave up.  This morning had the epiphany that my problem was i was trying too hard to brute force a bunch of attacks when I could get close; Probably makes more sense to attack, retreat to safety, etc, retreat.  Used the spike traps the first time for that battle though, they are really cool!

Since I gave up on here I returned to that Hunter's March or whatever its called area above the Deep Docks.  got further than last time but lost a ton of rosaries when I would die then be unable to get back to my cocoon before dying again on a part I had cleared easily the previous time.  So frustrating!  gotta git gud

Oh, and I learned that if you hold down the dash button, you can just keep running at that speed, LOL.  I had been repeatedly clicking it as each little dash ended to dash again.  >slaps forehead>

I just got the key from BoneBottom and went around lol (you can get some cool items that way, that will help with the marsh/march)

One thing that bugs me, I got a charm thingy that is supposed to protect me while I am healing, the thing is, it seems like it still interrupts the heal, so it's pretty much worthless, as the result ends up being the same with or without it on.

Posted

I have found 2 doors that I could open with a Simple Key, but haven't bought the key yet because it costs a lot and I keep spending rosaries on other things and/or losing them due to dying before finding my cocoon.  Haven't wanted to go farm rosaries somewhere yet.

hmmm I dunno if I have that charm but that reminds me that I recently realized that since you can heal while in mid-air in this game, you can use that strategically to avoid damage in a boss fight by hovering in a certain spot using it

7 1/2 hours in now.  Had a funny session last night.  I resumed where I left off, the bench nearest to the Hunter's March run, so I did that a bunch of times and died in the forced enemy fight room over and over again until I said fuck it and gave up.  Will return when I have more powerups.

So I went back to Deep Docks and tried Lace again and beat her on my first try :p  Turns out it is MUCH easier if you take her slow and just get like one attack in then retreat to safety and repeat.

After beating here I rang the bell you must have mentioned that plays Dies Irae, then went into the Far Fields area.  I just kind stayed low and kept going right until I hit a dead end (giant locked gate), then turned around and headed back because I hadn't found the map guy or a bench and was getting worried about losing rosaries.  Well it turns out you can't go back because at one point you drop down from a high height; I'm trapped in Far Fields!  Eventually I explored more upward and found the seamstress and got the Princess Peach in SMB2 move cloak, which is AWESOME!  Every new movement-related upgrade you get in this game just makes it SO much more fun to play!

So now I could right the air streams and found the bench and the bellway station I had completely missed going through.....but the map guy was gone!!  I knew where he was supposed to be because I found the rings that are always around him, but the little room was empty!  Damn!  So I went to head out and had to do the Fourth Chorus boss battle which was....... AWESOME!!!  It probably took me 4-5 times to beat him, but it wasn't frustrating at all because each time I just got better and better and avoiding all his attacks and adapting to the new ones.  Great boss battle.  Anyways then I went back to the starting village and the map guy sold me the map of Far Fields there.  Phew!

Before quitting for the night I wandered up into some other new area, I don't think the name popped in yet but I found another village with another store and stuff, pretty cool!  This game seems like twice as big as HK in every aspect.

Posted

Is that the rainy village with the bird bugs?

I just got a new silk power, the one Hornet used in the opening cinematic.

Posted

Hmmm I don't remember bird bugs.  I think the village was called Pilgrim's something or other.

One of my problems is that I'm playing in bed at the end of the day just before falling asleep, so details don't stick in my mind!
