The game was actually titled "Goldeneye 007"

And it came out almost 30 years (in 1997), but it's possible you still played it 20 years ago in 2006 of course.

They should reopen CraigNotBond.com but paste this new lad's face over it.

After finishing Quantum Break, which had some really cool live action stuff going, I'm doing a replay of Resident Evil: Village on PC. Knocked this one out on PS5 a year ago, and I'd forgotten how really creepy this entry was. Mind you, I've only played two RE games, including 7 and 8. Really just doing this as prep for Requiem that's out next month. Village is also a game that makes you go "oh no not this part again". Yet again, I like this game so much, I might regenerate back into Lady D at some point.

Doesn't she stalk the player? I hate that kind of gameplay normally. I tolerated in SOMA as, well, it's SOMA.

It turned out I started stalking her because I wanted a cuddle, but she kept killing me for it.

Even the name "Ethan Winters" makes me laugh because it sounds as generic as the character himself that Capcom was eager to promote as "anonymous everyman".

I'm playing The Quarry, too. Trying to keep Emma safe, she's a hottie. The rest can all get killed for all I care.

Finished RE Village and its DLC, Shadows of Rose. Felt more supernatural and whimsical than I was expecting from an RE game, this expansion. And "Michael" and his function was similar to Polaris in Control, only he could speak in human speak.

And now onto the remake of Resident Evil 2. Just played about two hours of it. Is this game only set in this unrealistically enormous police station? It's got that "metrodvania" thing going like the Oldest House in Control. The inventory is ridiculously small, it seemed like Ethan's own in RE7 and RE8 started out a lot bigger than this Leon guy. I have to keep running back to the nearest storage box to flick things off. I guess that was an intended part of the game design to make that so frustrating? At least all Jesse Faden in Control needed was her single service weapon and didn't need to craft anything or make room for things that justs wastes time and breaks the momentum. Anyone else notice I reference Control a lot?

I'm guessing the JW guys aren't really Arc Raiders guys. Game takes over your life.

Playing as Leon, I'm now deep in the sewers looking for chess piece plugs, but I'm extremely low on ammo, and not sure what to do. Gonna have to check every other damn direction. The Reddit gamers discussing this same scenario all seem to assure the newbies that the game is definitely beatable with low ammo, but it's going to be an endurance run. I also thought I'd seen the last of Mr X on this run back at the police station, but it turns out he followed Leon and Ada down there, and I'm checking around every corner just to see when he pops up. He's actually easy compared to those zombie swarms that can drain your ammo and health bar really quickly. I think it's just a skills deficiency on my part, since I apparently forgot the "survival" part in Survival Horror.

Searching sewers for a chess piece is why I stay away from Resident Evil games these days.

Posted

I spent about an hour backtracking through the police station after I found a lift back there, where I was able to stock up on health, ammo and new weapons by raiding safes, lockers, and secret areas. All thankfully without Mr X around. I found all the chess plugs, as well as the chemical flame thrower, and trying to save Ada, but now I have a goddamn new monster boss to deal with. To think there are multiple ways of playing this game once you've made the first playthrough as Leon. Next it's playing as Claire, then Leon and Claire B scenarios. I'll get my money's worth.

Finally played Alan Wake II since Control Resonant is around the corner.

As close as we’ll ever get to a David Lynch game.

Maybe not. There's also Immortality.

Just beat the first run of Leon's story in RE2. That final boss fight with Mr X was agonising, but it helps to know his swinging patterns, and to have a can of extra health in your inventory. Now I'm onto Claire 2nd run. My eyeballs are burnt out. Gotta take a break.

Just finished the Claire 2nd run of RE2. Now playing RE3 remake. This one is way more linear, for better or for worse.

I don’t suppose there’s any hope of any of the original Pokemon games being released for the Switch this year for the 30th anniversary?

Nintendo has such a weird way of treating its franchises. I’ll pay full price for a 30 year old game, just give me the opportunity!

This game isn't as good as the last one, but it has one feature worth appreciating...

I heard this one is more actiony and less focused on puzzles. True?

Btw did you never play Dead Space?

There's sort of a puzzle at the hospital segment, but it's really just running around looking for keycards. Mostly it's like they tried to make it like RE5+6 as if it was a huge disaster movie action adventure. And Nemesis is an annoying stalker who's more scripted than other ones in the franchise.

I've played seven hours of Dead Space but put it on hold when I got stuck at one point. I'll get back to it later.

How are you about older graphics (I can't be doing with them these days), but don't forget about The Thing remaster as well, if you're ever on the lookout. Probably a bit too crude looking to you now after all these high fidelity Resi games (understandable). The Thing was a good one.

Posted

I have The Thing in my Steam library, just haven't gotten up to playing it yet. I also have the original on PS2.

I think they should have instead given it the proper remake treatment.

Probably wasn't in their budget. The screenshots on Steam look okay. I might take a quick RE break and play that one next. Then I'll do RE4 remake.

Gotham_Knights_Cover.jpg

Just started playing it. I'm at the beginning, but so far this is a better Batman: Arkham Knight sequel than that horrible Suicide Squad game.

Posted

Everyone pans it but I'll tell you this much: Gotham Knights is a rare modern single game that I actually played to completion. Objectively, the game is a very mid Arkham adventure, and I basically focused solely on the main questline and stuck exclusively to controlling Batgirl (pretty much completely ignoring the other playable ensemble). In fact I'd say the main reason I played through and enjoyed the game was based purely on the beautifully animated Batgirl character, whose moves were tactile, sexy and satisfying. Her avatar and her many collectable outfits looked absolutely badass when doing a Ben Affleck on the enemy thugs. By the end, it just made me wish for a Batgirl spin off series.

I also modded the batbike to be quite a bit faster than the game's snail-like default.

Posted

I was suspicious of Gotham Knights because I caught the pilot episode of the CW show of its namesake and thought it was awful. But it's actually not too bad? It's only $15 on Steam.

Posted

Do you like the Arkham games? It's basically a lower budget side entry into that series. I remember sticking with the default skin on Batgirl, but there was a black variant of it. So she looked like 60s Batgirl but with a Burton twist. Mega fit playable game character for fifteen hours.

Solid 6.5 game.

Yeah I've played all the Arkham games, and almost rage quit Arkham Knight at several frustrating moments, but I ended up winning anyway. I also just read that Gotham Knights isn't set within the same timeline as the Arkham games, so make of that what you will.

Posted

God knows, it's obviously an Arkham game at its core. It's just not as dense with world detail and things to do, but it kept me busy enough. I think I paid three quid for this game off some cheap key site.

The game doesn't have anything to do with that horrendous CW show. WB Games Montreal even came to social media to clarify that their game wasn't connected to the show

I agree with Jim, it's basically a lower budget Arkham, though with apparently a bigger Gotham map than Knight. It's pretty basic, maybe with some more time to polish and refine the game it could've been even better, but it's not bad. A pretty fun, by the numbers adventure game, the equivalent of a three star action movie that you put on just to have some fun.

I mean, clearly the game was planned to be an Arkham Knight sequel.

GK begins with Batman dead and his padawans needing to step up to protect the city from the bad guys, while AK is about "how Batman died" (ROTFLMAO).

But then moronic WB executives wanted to turn Suicide Squad into a billion dollar videogame powerhouse by making it into some Fortnite bullshit. I wouldn't be surprised if it were the execs that forced GK out of the Arkham continuity so to not overshadow SS: Kill the Justice League, which clearly was their golden goose. Time proved them wrong and GK to be the superior game, even if it's no masterpiece.

Still, the fact that GK is set in its own timeline allowed their team to do some changes to the characters: Barbara recovered her leg movements and is now back at being Batgirl, Tim is younger than he was in the Arkham saga and Jason is not a maniac who hired a militia to destroy Gotham but a part of the Bat-Family (as he should be).

On PC maxed out it's actually quite a good looking game in many areas and I think I locked it to 100fps so it was slick asf. They updated and patched it a tonne after the botched release. Most of the visual hangups people have are that it's just not as lavishly detailed and atmospheric as the Rocksteady games, which is fair. But I think it still looks decent.
