I played a few minutes of The Thing and thought nehh I'll revisit this later. Instead I'm playing RE4 Remake. I'm up to where Leon rescues Ashley, and now she's an annoying companion character that you have to escort to the escape chopper, and of course it's hordes of zombies you have to dodge and ensure they don't grab her and take her back to her cell.

I don’t suppose there’s any hope of any of the original Pokemon games being released for the Switch this year for the 30th anniversary?

Nintendo has such a weird way of treating its franchises. I’ll pay full price for a 30 year old game, just give me the opportunity!

I’d kill for a port of Red/Blue/Yellow. Would also gladly pay stupid money to relive that nostalgia.

Almost finished RE4R. Once that's done, I'll watch the animated movie Resident Evil: Degeneration, which is meant to be set between RE4 and RE5.

Rumour has it that Capcom might be working on a remake of RE: Code Veronica. I never played the original, but excited for another potential remake.

Are Shadow of War and Shadow of Mordor any good? They're on sale at the moment for only ten bucks for the pair.

People love them but I was bored. They're quite Arkham-y to control, and apparently the game's patented nemesis system was a really innovative mechanic, but I'm just ultra fussy with single player stuff these days and I didn't get into the game.

Same thing happened with Assassin's Creed Valhalla in the past fortnight, which I picked up for the sake of it in the sales, can't gripe at a fiver. I was bored by the time I completed the very long prologue (I hate the way AC games do this).

I was looking at reinstalling Soma last night, but went with a similarly recommended isometric horror instead called Stasis. Unfortunately that game was old enough to not want to boot up anymore. Thankfully I only paid a quid for it.

Mother and daughter? You would hope it'd be more Black Summer than another rehash of TLOU.

'Racoon City' always sounds really daft to me though.

Dunno if this has much to do with the game. It was just cool seeing Maika Monroe involved.

It seems like such an easy win for them. And would probably boost sales of hardware and the newer games.

I just ordered a used copy of the Japanese PS3 release of Resident Evil: Code Veronica. There seems to be no other way of playing this game nowadays. I saw some PS2 versions listed locally, but I'd rather play an HD version, even with all the Japanese menus, which I can easily translate into English by photographing the screen and uploading it to Google Translate. Even ChatGPT has given me a list of translations for the menus, options, and prompts.

I hadn't used my PS3 in a while, so I tested out Blood Stone 007, which I've never played before, and the console seems nice and stable. I'll probably need to replace the battery in the DualShock controller, because it's not charging fully.

It’s playable on PS4 and therefore PS5.

It’s on sale right now for $5.99.

That's the PS2 version on the PS Store, not the HD PS3 version.

Anyone else reckon the Dualsense controller is way too fragile? I got my mum to play Astro's Playroom just to see if she liked playing, but she gripped that controller way too hard, probably thinking that's how you're meant to use them, so now it's all creaky and feels like it's about to crack apart.

I've been using an Xbox controller for most games at my PC for a while, and it just feels like it has more endurance than the PS5 one.

Back in the day, ones like the NES and SNES controllers could be thrown across the room and still work as good as new.

Posted

I use an Xbox Elite 2, I love it. My next buy though will be the swanky new Steam one, because it basically looks like the perfect gamepad for PC.

Posted

I wouldn't mind trying out that new Steam one. But I've grown to enjoy the Xbox Series X/S controller and its more clicky buttons and its asymmetrical sticks. It just feels like it can absorb more abuse than the fussy overproduced Dualsense diva – although the Dualsense seems to have superior vibrations to my Xbox one.

Posted

I always had a strong preference for the asymmetric stick positioning. They designed it around FPS (Halo), and it's endlessly comfortable for all games.

The new Steam pad doesn't go with that layout due to the mouse touch pads, but the sticks are still set quite high up on the face plate, so I imagine it to be comfortable (compared to the slightly more clawy Sony joypads).

Drax you'll want to sub this lady Laura Fryer (ex Microsoft gaming exec).

Holding up a mirror to dickhead devs in every video. She's great.

As soon as I hear either of the TikTok voices I purge the video window from my device.

Yup.

And they'll probably just toss all that hardware stock in landfill if the data centres are never built. Reselling it to consumers is not an option!

Meanwhile the economy crashes and burns making 2008 look like an inconvenient blip. So they say.

The only thing scarier than Silent Hill games is the damn prices on eBay and Marketplace. $400 for a friggin disc? Get outta here. And it's not like there's a shortage of them. There's a whole column of listings for these old PS1 and PS2 games that's a mile long, and yet these sellers think they're sitting on a rare antique. Talk about being deluded.

So instead I managed to get my PS3 connected to the PS Store and purchased and downloaded the first game there for ten bucks. I also bought a sealed PS3 disc of the HD collection for 2 and 3 for only $50, which is fair. I mostly wanted that one for the third game since I'll probably just play the remake of SH2. As for SH4, that's easily accessible on GOG.

I was potentially in the market for a nice new HDR monitor, but it seems it'd be wise to wait for these instead:

Posted

I got my OLED monitor and I'm pleased with it. I even play my emulated PS2 games on it.

Posted

That CRT motion clarity sounds too irresistible to me. I'm already setup with an OLED, but I have the money to spend so I'm gonna treat myself to one of these new ones.

I'm actually going to get Requiem, I'll wait for discounts. Was thinking I'd have another crack at the Texas Chainsaw one, which I bailed on because I hate trial and error stalking gameplay, but a mate of mine keeps telling me to stick at it. He also convinced me to give Village a go, as he reckons the stalking parts are only a small part of that game.

Almost finished second playthrough of SOMA, I just reached Site Tau which is its deepest point.

Posted

Village is campy fun. I've played it twice.

Regarding emulations, I was initially hesitant because of potential malware concerns, but I had to do some detective work in finding where the best sources were, and I managed to find some awesome emulators and game files from excellent sites. Which means I can play the original Silent Hills without paying $400 a damn disc.

Posted

The original Silent Hill games were unbelievably rough even when they first came out, I couldn't face them now.

Posted

I gave the first two games a quick test drive for about 15 minutes each. SH1 doesn't hold up well, but the second one is pretty eerie and unnerving.

Posted

I think that was the one I played through back in the day, great game. The new releases are still on my to-do list.

Posted

Yeah I've got Silent Hill 2 Remake and Silent Hill f in my Steam library. I'll get around to them eventually. I have a friggin backlog a mile long, including the aforementioned SHs, plus Silent Hill 3, Silent Hill 4: The Room, and all the rest from that series that I managed to acquire. And on top of that, a bunch of PS3 007 games I never got to play back in the day. And all the remaining Resident Evils I haven't tackled yet, in addition to the RE novelisations that I started reading.

Posted

I had this old second-hand wheel in storage that was meant for PS3, but I got it working on my PC and playing emulated PS2 games with it. Nice use of that 5070 Ti huh.

I bet you don't even enable RT and DLSS in Requiem

Posted

I don't even really need to do DLSS. I have it capped at 120fps.

I do have Rey Tracing activated in the game though. Here's one of my own screencaps below:

Native is pointless when you have access to DLSS. I'll enable path tracing when I play it, on a weaker card (because I'll use DLSS).

I played Silent Hill 2 remake last year, and I loved it. Admittedly, I've never played any SH game before, so it was a completely new experience. But I loved each creepy, terrifying and psychologically demanding second of it.

SH veterans were more split, but as an introduction to this universe, it was great.

He was fine. Not the scariest thing in the game, since, as the series' flagship character, I already knew him before playing the game. So the boss battles with Eddie and the Abstract Daddy were much better.

But I did like the first encounter with Pyramid Head early in the game, when it's near Impossible to defeat him.

I like it in the PS2 version where you're walking through the fog and it sounds like there's an extra set of footsteps as if something is following James, but when you look around, nothing's there.
