Haven't seen a ton of reviews so I may have missed people talking about it, but do people seem to think the de-aging looks pretty good?

Serviceable but noticeable of course seems to be the census

Random question but… are they de-aging the voice? I’m guessing yes but I’m wondering how they handled the process for dubs.

They hired Mike to remaster Ford's voice.

I wonder when Hollywood will actually be able to make a de-aging that impress everyone and it's not as controversially-received as the de-aging for other recent movies. Is it something  like this actually possible? Or even the most powerful tech won't be able to get through the uncanny valley?

Deaging stuff doesn’t bug me, not any more than movies that have any rubber puppets or regular CG or anything like that

Going to piggyback on this to say I had absolutely no issues with CGI Tarkin whatsoever. In fact, it's incredibly remarkable considering computer animation was in its infancy a couple decades ago.

One of the most infamous examples of terrible early CGI faces was Dwayne Johnson in The Mummy Returns, which was a mere 15 years before Rogue One. Even if Tarkin doesn't look "perfect", it's a very important stepping stone for the future of this technology, and is only going to lead to better results longterm.

...But people don't care about that. They only care about now.

Improving the tech is neat and all but I think most people are wondering to what end and whether this should replace just re-casting

I don’t think it matters one lick either way, but obviously they only use it when the person or character was famous when they were younger so it has the increased novelty of being like “hey, young Michelle Pfeiffer!”

Personally I think it's most important use is (or should be) for replacing stunt doubles' faces.

Then the irony of that is that you want to go a completely different technical route than what they ended up doing for Tarkin which was a full CGI reconstruction, and go more towards the line of deepfakes.

The work done in Rogue One did not enhance or improve the pipeline for that, if anything it just showed the inadequacy of a highly sophisticated and meticulously crafted technique in comparison to something with much less precision and more trial-and-error focused

If I remember rightly one of the first times this was done was in Jurassic Park where Ariana Richards' stunt double looked directly at the camera after falling through the ceiling during the final chase from the control centre. OK it's quite basic - just a face replacement for a split second - but it meant that an excellent piece of stunt work didn't need to be reshot or covered up in editing.

You just described mine (and I think most of the other members') experiences with the "Other Topics" and "JWFan" subforums... You can find some really interesting content there! :)

Hey I said personally, not that they would only use this technology for masking stunt actors.

The fact is whether we like it or not Hollywood is going to keep resurrecting actors, or making them appear younger. So as long as they keep progressing these techniques, eventually it might become seamless for those who currently take issue with the "uncanny valley" look.

Is "Indiana Jones and the Dial" the American title?

New ad. No new music - a little Ark Theme and then I think the trailer arrangement of the Raiders March. And

My issue isn’t the uncanny look as it is the limitations and stilted implementation of the thing versus re-casting. It’s a very limited piece of technology if you want it to stay remotely convincing which is not ideal for dynamic performances

Any word on a novelization? I know we're still a month away from the movie release, but usually there's some kind of listing/announcement by now, isn't there?

Then again, we still don't have an official soundtrack release date either, do we?

Officially no, but Mike said on a podcast it was locked, and Mangold tweeted it'd come out the same week as the film.

Inetersying ... I hadn't thought of that. I didn't really pay attention to his younger voice. I wonder if they also used AI voice things so his voice would match his apparent age.

The budget won't allow it. ;)

It's already one of the most expensive films ever made at a budget of $300 million. It will have to make $850-900 million just to break even.

Geez... until a few years ago it used to be rare a movie costing over $250m, let alone $300m. Now it seems like every blockbuster is having an over-inflated cost. How come Universal spent $340m just to make fucking Fast and Furious X?

I can only imagine the core cast gets significantly more expensive with each new movie

That's probably it. And now because of the monstrous budget Fast X needs to earn about a billion dollars just to break even. Grosses on par with Fast 5, 6 or 9 won't do it. And with diminishing returns on both the US and China, it'll be really hard getting there (see here).

The same will probably happen to Indy too. The movie is just way too expensive.

So he's 55/56 now, and if Ford can still be playing Indy at 80 ..

Coming summer 2048, Vin Diesel in Fast And Furious XXX!*

*Patrons are advised that this is not a crossover with Mr Diesel's previous (sort-of) franchise, and also not a porno.
