I wonder when Hollywood will actually be able to make a de-aging that impress everyone and it's not as controversially-received as the de-aging for other recent movies. Is it something  like this actually possible? Or even the most powerful tech won't be able to get through the uncanny valley?

I’m expecting a movie about dealing with the culture clash between Indy and the modern world (although in this case the 60s) that ends up concluding that there is still a place for this kind of straight forward adventure despite the complexity of the modern world, and for it to be a rollicking adventure that balances the modern sensibilities with the fun and entertainment of the originals. Going to piggyback on this to say I had absolutely no issues with CGI Tarkin whatsoever. In fact, it's incredibly remarkable considering computer animation was in its infancy a couple decades ago.

 

One of the most infamous examples of terrible early CGI faces was Dwayne Johnson in The Mummy Returns, which was a mere 15 years before Rogue One. Even if Tarkin doesn't look "perfect", it's a very important stepping stone for the future of this technology, and is only going to lead to better results longterm.

I don’t think it matters one lick either way, but obviously they only use it when the person or character was famous when they were younger so it has the increased novelty of being like “hey, young Michelle Pfeiffer!”

Personally I think it's most important use is (or should be) for replacing stunt doubles' faces.

Then the irony of that is that you want to go a completely different technical route than what they ended up doing for Tarkin which was a full CGI reconstruction, and go more towards the line of deepfakes.

The work done in Rogue One did not enhance or improve the pipeline for that, if anything it just showed the inadequacy of a highly sophisticated and meticulously crafted technique in comparison to something with much less precision and more trial-and-error focused

If I remember rightly one of the first times this was done was in Jurassic Park where Ariana Richards' stunt double looked directly at the camera after falling through the ceiling during the final chase from the control centre. OK it's quite basic - just a face replacement for a split second - but it meant that an excellent piece of stunt work didn't need to be reshot or covered up in editing.

Hey I said personally, not that they would only use this technology for masking stunt actors. 

 

The fact is whether we like it or not Hollywood is going to keep resurrecting actors, or making them appear younger. So as long as they keep progressing these techniques, eventually it might become seamless for those who currently take issue with the "uncanny valley" look.

My issue isn’t the uncanny look as it is the limitations and stilted implementation of the thing versus re-casting. It’s a very limited piece of technology if you want it to stay remotely convincing which is not ideal for dynamic performances

That's probably it. And now because of the monstrous budget Fast X needs to earn about a billion dollars just to break even. Grosses on par with Fast 5, 6 or 9 won't do it. And with diminishing returns on both the US and China, it'll be really hard getting there (see here).

 

The same will probably happen to Indy too. The movie is just way too expensive.
