Popular Post crumbs 14,289
Mads Mikkelsen has a few comments about the film: Quote While he’s forbidden from discussing character or story details from the film (the rumor is that he plays, yes, the villain), Mikkelsen revealed the movie feels like a return to the franchise’s early 1980s roots. “[Raiders of the Lost Ark] was one of my favorite films, and it just oozed that golden period of serials from the 1940s — and that’s in the fifth film as well,” he says. “They’re going heavily back to the first and second film and getting that original feel, the original Indy, something dense and epic.” James Mangold (Ford v Ferrari) has taken over directing duties from Steven Spielberg, who remains on board as an executive producer. “It felt like a Spielberg film, though it’s obviously James making it with the same vision,” Mikkelsen says. Harrison Ford, who’s pushing 80, returns as the iconic adventurer. Raiders and Doom as their main inspiration is welcome news to me! Always felt the heightened pulpy adventure feel went a bit missing after Temple of Doom, which IMO is the "purest" Indiana Jones film. Last Crusade is a great film but there was clearly a concerted effort to "ground" the series after TOD. If I was in Mangold's shoes I'd probably rather swing for the fences and miss, than make another Crystal Skull (which has too much meandering plotting and lifeless exposition). Think that'll come down to Spielberg more than Disney. There's no way Spielberg didn't retain final cut (or gave it to Mangold by proxy). That said, Spielberg's own Indy 4 was oddly bloodless and tepid, as if he was "whitewashing" the character from killing anyone. He's signed off on the violent Jurassic World films though, so... who knows. Chen G.

With all due respect to Mikkelsen, this will be closer to 'Jungle Cruise' than to anything from the 80's. Di$ney doesn't earn big bucks by catering to a 40+ year old men crowd living in the past and Spielberg will not playing the 500 pound gorilla here and now. Taikomochi 1,136
I should think an F would be an F. You can argue the context about it being a blockbuster, it being a sequel to a revered franchise, that it should have done better than a B, but that doesn’t change that most people, nonetheless, liked the film, even if not very strongly. That doesn’t even mean it necessarily is a good film. That just means any claims that most people disliked the film are not based in fact. SyncMan 313
Now that Disney has a firm release of Indy 5, Disney Concerts can get off their butts and start preparing a LTP concert for, at least, one of the Indy films, so that they can take advantage of the fanbase who are now counting down the days towards the release. Most of the time movies that get an F are the interesting auteur experiments that are a bit confrontational with the audience on purpose. Like Aronofsky's Mother! and Soderbergh's Solaris. Like the new Doctor Strange got a B+, which is pretty mediocre for an MCU movie which almost all get A or A+. And lo and behold, DS2 had the steepest 2nd weekend drop of any MCU movie yet. Especially because all the VFX and visual nonsense at the end of KOCS amounted to... well, very little.
