I know we all balked at the idea of TROS being his final film score but shit... I'm a bit depressed thinking how likely this could be the case now.

Is there even a film industry left for Williams to score in the foreseeable future? And what studios will allow orchestral recordings over the next few years? It's a perfect storm for the likes of Zimmer's autopilot factory to swoop past and dig their claws into, considering they can delegate a score to 20 composers who can work remotely and submit cues overnight through Dropbox.

Well, I believe on the upcoming months it'll be safe again to resume scoring sessions, this pandemic can't last forever.

If Williams does IJ5, by then it'll probably be ok to do it with a lot of people on the same room.

The main problem is that if he'll have the disposition to do another 2 hour action score, and if Mangold, or whoever directs it, will want him as the composer.

Now they have time to write a new script again... one that Spielberg WANTS to direct.

I don't think its the script that the issue.

What's the point of an action film where the action hero - no matter how intentionally off-kilter - is octogenarian? Its even dumber than an action film where the action hero is a septuagenarian (see Crystal Skull, the Kingdom of) and Spielberg knows it.

It would be nice if Spielberg actually came out and talked about why he's passing on the film. If his heart isn't in it (like Crystal Skull) then nobody would begrudge him. It's the same reason he probably shouldn't have done The Lost World and wisely moved on from that series afterwards.

Disney wants a director with a more wholesome family.

Hasn't stopped them from releasing West Side Story.

It would be terribly disappointing if The Post and The BFG were the last two Spielberg/Williams collaborations, it has to be said. Only 3 scores together in the last 8 years? :folder:

That movie's nearly finished, and the stuff about his daughter's porn ambitions is only a very recent development.

You won’t see a lot of big crowd scenes in this movie due to covid, script being adjusted says Indiana Jones 5 producer

The main takeaway I have from this is that the film is still a serious project, which is no good because it means it will likely happen, and I personally much prefer that it won't.

I agree. Let Indy go

lulwat? Not even a press release or official statement confirming Spielberg's exit? Just a bunch of rumour-mill articles months ago, now Marshall just casually dropping that Mangold took over and Spielberg's out. It's like casually mentioning that George Lucas wouldn't be involved in SW7 and JJ Abrams would direct, without so much as a press release.

Quote

How is the writing process of Indy 5 going, though? Marshall, somewhat surprisingly, put it simply: “It just started.”

Geez, you've only had 12 years!

Hopefully this means everything Koepp did was binned and Mangold started from scratch with a new writer and a fresh vision. No doubt the film was heading towards another half-baked mess of 20 different scripts thrown together like KOCS; probably why Spielberg threw in the towel.

Still, the whole thing (and Spielberg going to ground) has been very strange.

Though now with Spielberg out, there's nobody to push back on stupid shit to try and preserve quality (even if Indy 4 and RPO are against him) and the studio could hire any clown to crap out any garbage they write.

This doesn't count?

Not exactly an official announcement, and it said Mangold was only in talks at that point according to unnamed "sources." It's just weird we've heard nothing from Disney, Lucasfilm or Spielberg about him leaving the project, and they all refused to comment when asked. And no announcement that Mangold has seemingly signed and started work.

Either way, still have my doubts about this project seeing the light of day, especially in a post-COVID-19 world. Forget about a globetrotting adventure story when the world's borders are closed indefinitely -- and nobody wants another KOCS-style US-shot Indy film.

One of the reason why I don't want this to happen is because it would almost certainly delay a release of a box set of Williams' scores even further. 😆

These days they just film everything on the US with green screens. Lots of recent super-hero movies were filmed on the Atlanta sets rather than on location, with a lot of help of CGI.

If they go ahead with this thing, there'll be CGI galore. No way they'll be flying around to other countries with 80-year-old (!) Harrison Ford, specially with COVID.

It took like 14 years to write Crystal Skull. ;)

It’s very difficult to write it around an 80-year old man.

Ford’s age is a deal-breaker.

Can't they just reboot it and have him try to find Ark of Covenant again? It's not like they need to do anything else to cross 1 billion at the box office. Why sweat?

The Ark has gone missing and the government asks Indy for help, assigning their top agent to help. Insert trendy star. They discover that Indy's father is still alive in hiding, guarding the Ark, drinking from the holy grail. In the final battle, Indy deliberately opens the Ark and wipes out the bad guys, Henry crosses the seal and sacrifices himself or just decides that his work is finished, succumbing to mortality. "Well done, Indiana."

Thanks for giving me an image of an 80-year old Indiana Jones, who has dementia and tries to find things from the previous movies again.

That seems like the safest way to do it, honestly. The Ark has gone missing and the government asks Indy for help, assigning their top agent to help. Insert trendy star. Sean won't come back.

But that'd be a solid nostalgia play. Basically combines 1 and 3 which are the consensus faves while ignoring 2 which is less popular and retconning 4 which nobody loves. Could at least amuse anybody who dug Force Awakens, which isn't nothing.

Indeed it should not.

And yet it is.

I don't understand why.

Looking at the books, the quality also varies wildly.

And I suppose getting the tone right (a bit 'out there', but not too much; serious, but with a sense of humour) can be quite a challenge.

Hmm... Not sold on that one.

The stories of the Ark and Grail were already told, I reckon.

And told quite well.

I'd quite appreciate if Temple of Doom would actually get some sort of reference in the fifth film.

It doesn't deserve being ignored.

But even in the books, if there are references to the films, its mainly to Henry Jones Sr. or Marion.

And Shorty gets shafted... :(
