The Chronicles of Narnia (Netflix reboot)

Oooh yea, he'd do well with this.

What happened to him anyway?  Copernicus Star / Battle for Terra / Escape from Tomorrow were all so awesome, then he just kinda disappeared.  I know he scored that Penny Dreadful show for a while, but that wasn't really my thing.  When's he gonna do something cool again?

His Nocturnal Animals score was good.

So Narnia is Netflix's consolation prize for losing out to Amazon on Middle-Earth.

The same question will be asked that asked of every Narnia adaptation...how much of the religious imagery and themes will they keep?

I'm frankly looking forward to BBC's His Dark Materials more.

@Jay, given that the Joe Johnston flick is clearly off, maybe a more appropriate thread title to reflect the project's new home at @ Neflix? Perhaps something more in line with a title @BloodBoal would pick? e.g. "Netflix scoops up Narnia: Will there be porn?"

Hmmmm.

It seems unlikely to me that there would be a theatrical adaptation continuing the prior film series, and a reboot, both done by Netflix. Has the Johnston film even started shooting? It's been in development hell forever. I bet there will be news of its cancellation any time now.

The Narnia books have been adapted several times before, most recently by Disney for three films — 2005’s The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, 2008’s Prince Caspian, and 2010’s The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. A film version of the fourth book in the saga, The Silver Chair, was supposed to start filming this year under director Joe Johnston with Gordon producing, but it sounds like this deal is effectively overwriting that one.

Right now, I think I'd single out Lewis as probably my favorite writer ever, but I did not enjoy the first Hollywood attempts at adapting the Narnia books.  Greta Gerwig does not strike me as the right person either.  At worst she actively undermines Lewis (I'm afraid this is also the most likely scenario).  At best.... well, I dunno really what the best case is here.  I like Gerwig's Little Women a lot actually.  She made some pretty big changes for that adaptation, but the changes were ones that struck me as very much honoring Louisa May Alcott in an honest and admirable way.  All I can hope is that she would afford Lewis the same honor.

Past Lion/Witch/Wardrobe, I'm not sure the Narnia books are even adaptable.  It might take some 'big swing' creative choices.  It will definitely require somebody finally realizing that the Chronicles of Narnia are not an epic fantasy series, but something far more interesting and strange.  I'm interested to see what Gerwig does, if indeed she actually has this job.  I'm not seeing this story picked up by the 'respectable' industry outlets yet.  I'm just glad it's not (shudder) Benioff & Weiss or similar type of assholes.

I’d prefer Blu-ray releases of the old BBC series.

This is still my opinion!

Greta Gerwig is apparently directing at least 2 Narnia movies so given her history of working with Desplat, I think the odds are good that he will score the new Narnia movies!

This would be a great scoring assignment!

Kinda funny if he does, seeing as he scored Golden Compass.

Golden Compass isn’t bad I thought, it’s His Dark Materials.

I love his HP scores so I think he’d be a great fit for Narnia.

I hope they do a proper adaptation of all the books, because while I really like the ones they did, it was such a shame they suddenly stopped doing them, adaptin only 3 of the 7 books. I hope this time they can get it right (and I'm hoping something similar for the Percy Jackson TV show adaptation in Disney+).

As for the music, I think Desplat would be a great fit, and I could see it happen if Gerwig is involved, but otherwise, I don't really see him as a composer who would work for Netflix in this kind of adaptations, but who knows, since he has already lent his hand in other sagas like Dark Materials or Harry Potter (both of which I loved).

If Desplat would be doing this, and I don't mean it in a mean way because I like Desplat, but I wouldn't be surprised if he would get replaced again.

Because it doesn't seem like producers/directors these days want the Harry Potter/Golden Compass Desplat anymore.

The last time he wrote a great action score was Valerian and that's 6 years ago.

But I would love it if Desplat would get the chance to do multiple fantasy films where he can build on his own themes.

Andy Serkis should do a mo-cap Aslan

The three movies are pretty bad, especially the third, though I’m not much a fan of the books either.  I personally think that if they’re going to do this though, they should adapt everything - go all the way.

I liked the first movie but I haven't read the books so I don't know whether a series would've done a better job.

I don't think we should be pining for HGW/Desplat/whoever to return. These reboots are a good opportunity for other/new composers to try something bigger scale and generally make a new iteration of the story.

I'm pretty sure Netflix will insist on removing every last bit of Christian allegory from these stories.

I’m an atheist fan of these books and that’s utter nonsense. They’re going to remove Aslan? Literally the entire plot of the first book is clear Christian allegory. How can they possibly retain any aspect of the basic plot and have it NOT be Christian allegory? Do you even know these books?

I was raised on these books because they were Christian and now that I'm no longer religious, I don't see how anyone who isn't could really could get anything out of them. Different strokes I guess. I'd love to buy expanded soundtracks for Caspian and Dawn Treader though.

What an idiotic statement. Of course I do, I read them when I was eleven years old. As a Christian, I'm pretty sure I recognise Christian allegory better than any atheist, whatever that is.
