To what pop/rock artist's career can JW's career be best compared?

Weird question perhaps, but today I had a discussion with a colleague about John Williams and in order to illustrate the success of Williams' career I wanted to compare his to the career of a pop/rock artist. But I just couldn't find a proper comparison hence the question I lay before you.

Nobody has the longevity he's had, that's for sure. Maybe the Rolling Stones come closest in that regard

I'm not sure why you would want to compare him to a rock/pop artist, because even though he has his roots in jazz and popular music of the 60's, he's anything but. So I wouldn't really know where to start. It's like being asked to compare an apple with a banana beyond the fact that they're both fruit! :)

No, no, I don't mean a comparison on a musical level. Pure career-wise, as him having an impact on the respected genre. Like "John Williams is the .... of film music". Who would you put on the ... spot that would make someone unfamiliair with film music - but familiair with pop/rock music - go: "Ah, now I get an idea about his importance!"

The Beatles, of course, and Bernard Herrmann is Elvis! Jerry Goldsmith is The Rolling Stones, John Barry is Bob Dylan, and James Horner is Fleetwood Mac.

Pretty accurate, I'd say!

So John Williams' career ended after only ten years because two women messed it up, and then an assassin's bullet removed one-fourth of the man, nullifying any talk of getting his career back on track.

Accurate. Uh, all but. :P

Paul McCartney ... both long careers, both romantics, both geniuses ... and both like to verture into music for the concert hall.

Ah, well then definitely Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, The Beatles, Bono, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones etc. All the big superstars. There has never been a bigger star in film music land, even though a guy like Morricone may arguably be better known over here in Europe.

I think that's the thing about John Williams, you can't effectively compare his career to anybody else's.

THIS.

I think the standard comparison you're looking for is "apples to oranges." Unless I'm missing an obscure reference.

He, he...I know. But since apples and oranges are both round in shape, I thought banana would be a more different type of fruit with which to compare.

Oh man, can't believe I just said that.

What? Beaten as a child, so successful that he lost touch with reality, weird plastic surgery and accused of molesting children, forgiven after death?

That's not John Williams...

Sounds like a perfect description to me.

How about comparing him to someone outside the world of music? I'd go with Federer. Both are late-bloomers, but when they broke through they racked up one Grand Hit after the other. Both are known for their talent, intelligence, artistry and variety. Etc.

Bono maybe. Highly respected, venerated even. Without any real downfalls in either his career or personal life.

good God no, Bono is a f***ing Piece of crap. The man has a voice that is a stone.

Paul McCartney is the correct answer.
