Marian Schedenig 11,592 Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 Let's hope Doyle was inspired. I have a feeling he hasn't been in a while.
Neimoidian 15 Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 Let's hope Doyle was inspired. I have a feeling he hasn't been in a while. The only recent score of his that I like is As You Like It and I know most people aren't fond of it either.
crocodile 9,628 Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 His recent La Ligne Droite is pretty good.Well, it's very good actually.Karol
publicist 4,650 Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 The only recent score of his that I like is As You Like It and I know most people aren't fond of it either. It's decent enough but not a style of music for most people who expect scores like WOLVERINE 4 or C®APTAIN AMERICA with gibberish anticipation.
Maurizio 6,913 Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 This is a clip of music as heard on the official film's website:http://thor.marvel.com/assets/audio/thor_loop_1.mp3I guess this a snippet of Doyle's score. Well, it doesn't sound very promising to my ears (but it was somewhat expected after listening to Patrick's interview last week).
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,148 Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 William Shakespeare's Thor.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,148 Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 That sounds great! This is the must buy score of the year for me!
publicist 4,650 Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 The Zimmer spell is alive and kicking, it seems...
Richard P 5,234 Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 Sounds more like Jerry Bruckheimer's Thor....and I'm not sure about that theme either.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,148 Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 The FSM crowd is a lot more postitive! The music is definitely Doyle, I hear flavors of DEAD AGAIN, HAMLET and other past scores in it, which excites me no end.Haha. It's the 'Patrick' Power Anthem. I like the theme. This bodes well for the score
publicist 4,650 Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 Never underestimate the power of self-delusion. Would Goldsmith be alive and this would be his THOR theme, half of the board would fall over themselves praising it as manna from heaven. As it is, it's just another lam-O tune.
Ollie 1,375 Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 Sounds more like Jerry Bruckheimer's Thor.Sigh........
Thor 9,345 Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 Is that really Doyle? If it is, it's the closest I've ever heard him come to Zimmer et.al.Not that that's a bad thing, necessarily (I love that sound!), but I was expecting something more.....Doyle-ish, I guess.
Neimoidian 15 Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 Is that really Doyle? If it is, it's the closest I've ever heard him come to Zimmer et.al.Most popular film composers write like this these days, because they are asked to do so. Hence most scoress sound alike. As for the sample, this doesn't sound like Doyle's at all. I hope it's not him.
Hlao-roo 390 Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 A stunning achievement. This is music that thrills the heart and stirs the soul. Haunting and sweeping. Doyle is a master.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,148 Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 You sound like a varese press release.
Wojo 2,458 Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 Add exclamation points to each sentence, you get Intrada.
Muad'Dib 2,038 Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 Why does every score have to sound like that nowadays? Really, couldn't we have a brassy old-fashioned theme? It doesn't even have to be light-hearted... It could be something like Conan. Now that's badass music and it doesn't even need synths! We can only hope that they don't ask to Silvestri something like this for Captain America.

Ollie 1,375 Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 I was looking forward to Thor and Captain America. Not so much now.Oh well we have 3 big scores coming from Michael Giacchino, Cars 2, MI: III and Super 8.
Maurizio 6,913 Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 Why does every score have to sound like that nowadays? Really, couldn't we have a brassy old-fashioned theme? It doesn't even have to be light-hearted...I don't know if you saw Doyle's interview that was posted here last week, but he told that the producers (i.e. Marvel Studios) were adamant to have a score removed of any kind of "old-fashioned" elements. They wanted a dark, low, brooding sound that should have not compete with the visuals. He even said that there are no trumpets in the score, save for the last reel cues.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,148 Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 Trumpets in Superhero movies are sooo cliche now. Williams and Elfman really overused them.I wonder if this means Silvestri's Captain America will be under the same restrictions.
Muad'Dib 2,038 Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 Trumpets are cliche? And this power-anthems aren't?Then I'll take cliches over this any day.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,148 Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 Power anthems are NOW! They represent the present and are far more relevant then an instrument that has been used to depict heroism for centuries.I mean, move on!
Wojo 2,458 Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 Good job, Steef. Acceptance is the second step. You're well on your way.
Muad'Dib 2,038 Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 I love how you enjoy so much confusing people
A24 5,112 Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 Oh, master Stefancos, tell us how to overcome the simplicity and the banality of the 'power anthem'. Please, learn us how to use our ears properly so we too can further enjoy the music and the films of today! We want to adapt to modern times. Show us the way!
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,148 Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 First of all, you must accept that the smaller black "buttons" on the standard MIDI keyboard are redundant and complicate things.
Ollie 1,375 Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 Well one good thing is that I'm saving a shitload of money by not having to waste it on today's garbage that passes for film music.
crocodile 9,628 Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 And in this civilized times of equality and respect for human rights we mustn't torture the musicians like in the barbarian days of The Matrix. They're people too, you know. Karol
Neimoidian 15 Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 Don Davis doesn't know how to write a proper power anthem. You don't learn things like this at school.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,148 Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 The music from The Matrix is far to complex and layered. No good power anthem can come from such a score.People like Don Davis and Elliot Goldenthal don't know what they are doing!
Wojo 2,458 Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 Since power anthems are all the rage, it's a shame that Journey, Europe, and Def Leppard don't get to write more film scores.
crocodile 9,628 Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 Power anthems are dated! Not at all. They perfectly capture the zeitgeist of our times.Karol
Brónach 1,328 Posted April 8, 2011 Author Posted April 8, 2011 I thought we had moved on to the electronic ostinati and weird sounds!
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,148 Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 Speaking of zeitgeist. Does NBC News still use that Williams-written theme? It's so busy and chaotic.I think I can even hear counterpoint in it, which is just vulgar!
