Upcoming Scoring Assignments

More awesome for you than if Doyle returned?

You have to admit that it's an interesting choice.

If Iron Man is any indication, then Marvel doesn't really care about keeping a composer attached to a certain film series. In that case I prefer someone like Burwell over a Jablonski or Badelt.

I wouldn't blame Jay - Burwell's not exactly prolific in mainstream scores these days.

But yes, he does have a style - it's kind of a soft, pastel-like sound, with more use of wind instruments than other composers.

I am completely unfamiliar with Burwell's sound

His work on the last two Twilight films won me over, as well as True Grit. Check these tracks out.

I've heard one of his scores (The Awakening) upon recommendation, and it was great. I've also heard some other samples of his work. I'd take Daniel Pemberton over Marc Streitenfeld any day!

Here is some stuff to listen to:

I like his pastiche for The Movies but other than that he isn't very interesting musically.

I wonder if the studio pushed Marc out over the whole Prometheus situation, but it seems like Ridley would be a director that chooses his composers.

What "Prometheus situation"? The fact that HGW did a few cues? I'll never understand why no one here likes his recent stuff.

Daniel Pemberton... ah, I just looked up his TV work, and he did some music for Peep Show (UK sitcom I watch). What an odd choice.

Who, Harry's recent stuff? I love Harry, but he was brought in after Streitenfeld scored the film to give it some flare. Odd situation, since Harry hated Ridley for replacing his music on Kingdom Of Heaven with Goldsmith and others.

And Federico Jusid (The Secret in their Eyes) is scoring 300: Rise of an Empire.

Thank God it's not Bates. Jusid is actually talented, for one.

Hold the phone! An FSMer is now reporting that new posters for the film say Junkie XL is scoring it, and Ford Thaxton posted that the rumor is that RCP stepped in to replace the score!

Oh, and Lucas Vidal (The Cold Light of Day) took over scoring duties from Brian Tyler for Fast & Furious 6.

Guess Tyler was too busy with Iron Man 3. Good replacement though.

It's an epidemic!

The latest posters for F&F 6 indicate that Atticus Ross has replaced Lucas Vidal!

Those films probably deserve the composers they got.

No big loss as I will never see either one.

Warner Bros is probably going to put Zimmer or one of his clones on Godzilla.

Okay, I'm thinking directors who don't want their composers replaced need a clause in their contract, like Sam Mendes did for Thomas Newman for Skyfall.

So discouraging for these two composers... both of them on high profile pics, and they get jettisoned for someone who can provide that popular 'sound' Zimmer and his cronies provide.

The Film Music Reporter source is dated April 30, I hadn't heard anything before that. I did a quick search on here for "Twelve Years a Slave" and it didn't bring up anything about Zimmer scoring it.

Anyway, hope this brings something really interesting out of him. He hasn't had the opportunity to do something like this in awhile.

That 13 year old kids would rather hear an electronic power anthem RCP score than an orchestral Alan Silvestri score

Seriously, is this the year of orchestral composers replaced by electronic ones or what?

Yea, I was a bit harsh. I too enjoyed Jackman's score to Wreck-It-Ralph. Haven't seen or heard Puss In Boots.

Wow, wow, wow. Jackman is a very capable composer. He has proved this on Kick-Ass and Puss In Boots. On X-Men: First Class, Vaughn didn't let him do his own thing. I say if the director/producers let him do his own thing on Captain America, he could deliver a great score.

This. Not to mention Silvestri's recent output is generic and boring. Film scores in general have just taken a sharp turn downhill. JNH, Silvestri, Elfman, and even Zimmer all kinda suck now. Powell and Harry are indefinitely out of the game. Giacchino is past his peak for me. I've got no one left!

It's a rumor for now. Film Music Reporter hasn't proven or debunked it, so it could be anyone.

As for Henry Jackman scoring Captain America 2... if he's left to his own devices (rather than relying too much on electronics and synths like in G.I. Joe: Retaliation), he could do a good job. Emphasis on could. Maybe he'll actually reference Silvestri's theme... oh, who are we kidding? Debney nor Tyler referenced Djawadi's material for the Iron Man sequels, so I guess Marvel Studios isn't a stickler for music continuity.

Yeah, I found Silvestri's recent Marvel stuff passed without a flutter. Captain America was boring boring boring, and Avengers had maybe 20 minutes of interesting material. (and the only theme I can think of where the 'B' section is better than the 'A' section)

Although I'd still rather have that than something by a RCP clone.

I've heard a little of Jackman's work, and it seems to me that director requests really shape his sound. Kick-Ass certainly had some good orchestral stuff underneath the electronics.

I saw it now. Shoot.

What is with the studios' love for subpar MV/RC composers?

  • 3 weeks later...

More info from the FSM thread:

Burwell seems to have removed this from his website.

http://www.carterburwell.com/projects/Works-in-Progress.html

It used to say Thor: The Dark World here and there was a synopsis of the movie.

Did Burwell record anything?

Just some demos Im told.
