I know we've done this before but it's been awhile.

If you were to recommend 10 films that person should see in their lifetime, what would you suggest?

3. The Seven Samurai

Why do you feel every person needs to see this one?

Heh, I wanted to do a second 10 but that would be cheating. ;)

I knew it would be very difficult to come up with 10 and some hard decisions would have to be made.

3. The Seven Samurai

Why do you feel every person needs to see this one?

Because it's very good and the inspiration for many films to follow.

The Criterion release is excellent.

I would go with:

Jaws

Brazil

City Lights

Raiders of the Lost Ark

Star Wars

Heat

Jean de Florette/Manon des Sources

Amelie

North by Northwest

Vertigo

It's a very personal list, but I notice many of the movies I picked are on other peoples' lists too.

Going off the path slightly at the start, the whole "Must visits before you die" and "Must Dos" thing of today seems silly as encounters of a place/activity/film are all largely subjective.

What floats someone's boat, will sink another's. But here are a few selections of films I liked and would perhaps recommend.

But there is no 'needs' involved. I could list many others, but here are a few.

* Lawrence of Arabia ~ Cultural misunderstandings, political betrayal, misplaced romanticism. Superb.

* A Passage to India ~ Relationship between Empire and Subject. Well paced, very watchable movie.

* Black Narcissus ~ A story of escapist idealism and avoidance in the face of natural desire. Clever film.

* Midnight Express ~ Many profoundly powerful scenes in that movie, and John Hurt was superb in it.

* The Hill ~ Fabulous interaction of characters. Excellent camera work reflecting the sharp angles of order / control.

* Gandhi ~ Rather fawning romanticism about Gandhi and Indian Independence by Attenborough, but a nice work of semi fiction.

* Jason & the Argonauts ~ Jaunty fun and adventure with plenty of thigh slapping, with great effects for the time.

* Vertigo ~ Really surreal and beautifully shot. Be drawn into another psychological world.

All personal opinion, of course:

"Psycho"

"Jaws"

"The Great Escape"

"Ghostbusters" (for top notch comedy)

"The Godfather"

"Dirty Harry"

"First Blood"

"Planet of the Apes" (original)

"Men In Black" (more comedy goodness)

"Planes, Trains, and Automobiles" (just a movie I really enjoy, with some heart thrown into it missing from many comedies for a long while now)

The thread title and the first post say nothing about "the best" stuff, so I assume it's all about personal recommendation. It's more honest and interesting that way. :)

It’s a Wonderful Life

Jaws

Raiders of the Lost Ark

Schlinder’s List

Jurassic Park

Shawshank Redemption

Toy Story 3

Forrest Gump

Apocalypse Now

The Fugitive

* I really wanted to put in Good Will Hunting

* I also wanted to put in a comedy, but I didn't feel like someone would 'need' to see a comedy. I would have chosen Super Troopers, I think it's the greatest comedy of all-time.

* I know, crazy, 4 Spielberg movies, but I had to include Jurassic Park, it's the pinnacle of special effects in a movie.

All in all, 10 is too short :P

Yeah, it's a variety of films I enjoy and would like people to watch.

If I made a second list I would include:

Raiders

Psycho

Patton

The Searchers

Jason And The Argonauts

E.T.

CE3K

Smokey And The Bandit

Sixteen Candles

The Empire Strikes Back

and I'm still leaving off a bunch of great films I like.

That's now I interpret it. "10 Films A Person Needs To See.

Everyone needs to see Jaws, but it's definitely not in my personal Top 10.

Adding a #11 to my list...... :P

Duel (1971) ~ Very effective. Edge of your seat stuff, no matter how many times you've seen it. It shows just what can be done with directing talent, simplicity and a low budget.

Adding a #12 to my list, an interesting little road movie.

Motorama (1991) ~ Odd and surreal. Not what it first appears to be.

Ok I changed the title. I was being a bit loose with the word NEED.

There really is no film a person truly has to watch.

Adding a #13 to my list :P

Excalibur (1981) ~ Yep, not perfect but Wagnerian in more ways than just use of his music at times.

Nicol Williamson played the part of Merlin in a unique way.

When I'm out and about in Britain, sometimes it's just like that. Dark green, misty, and merliny :P

Ah yes, the 'charm of making'

1) The Sound of Music

2) Casablanca

3) Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

4) The Empire Strikes Back

5) Beauty and the Beast

6) Singin' in the Rain

7) Ocean's Eleven

8) Sleepless in Seattle

9) Schindler's List

10) My Fair Lady

11) Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

Ok, that last one is a joke.

Not a joke, but a movie that I excluded from my list simply because it came out so recently was Inception. I think if I still love it as much in a few years as I do now, I'll add it to the list. Gotta test the longevity first.

According to the new title, the following come to my mind:

Carlito's Way

Contact

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Fight Club

Heavenly Creatures

Inglourious Basterds

Much Ado About Nothing (Branagh)

Planet of the Apes

Scaramouche

Sneakers

Probably some more I'll instantly regret not having place for, but interpreting the title as films I want a person who's probably already seen the "common blockbuster stuff" to see made things easier (by allowing me to leave out LOTR, for example).

I disagree. I actually preferred the idea of what films we thought were culturally significant and should be seen by audiences.

Now it's just another Top 10 thread! ;)

The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford

C'era Una Volta Il West

A Clockwork Orange

Goodfellas

No Country For Old Men

Pulp Fiction
