La-La Land releasing Elliot Goldenthal's Batman Forever January 3rd 2012 (3500 units)

I thought, archival means something like un-curated. Just put the unedited recorded stuff on disc.

Or acronym of archaic and medieval.

Goldenthal did curate the main program of this release.

There was some griping about the 2010 release of ID4 being branded as the "Complete Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" as it was missing the film version of "Target Remains". This was one event that led to LLL deciding to use euphemisms like "Expanded" instead.

I find it strange if archival is meant to mean incomplete.

I don't think it is...

...it's a euphemism to avoid this exact situation. As I say, I don't blame LLL/Intrada etc. at all. They get enough grief for production or mastering issues or crossfading cues (or not crossfading cues) that they may as well cut off one route for complaints!

I reckon there's been a bit of a shift in the last 15 years. Go back to that sort of era and producers would omit things here and there if they didn't feel they were adding to the flow of play - film versons, stingers, etc. LLL's The Edge is not actually complete for example - it's missing a stinger.

Now I think all that's changed, and we get all sorts of subtly different takes, primarily so that all possible variations are released.

For all the whining and complaining here and FSM, I don't blame this sort of naming at all.

Sometimes they'd do this just to keep it to only one disc, like LLL's Mars Attacks. People complained at the time that it was missing bits that were in the isolated score from the DVD.

Yes, and Varese still does that. Volcano was trimmed to within an inch of its life to keep it to one disc, and The Time Machine is missing alternate takes found on the OST, again to keep it to one disc.

It's a risky move to do that now if it results in any actual score being missing. Having said that, it's risky either way - trim something to fit a score on one disc and people complain, but spread the score a bit thinly over two discs to ensure you retain that bit and a different cohort complains. Maybe also a label doesn't want the cost of a two-disc set for a score that may not have huge appeal. BSX likely had this issue with Don Davis' Voyage to the Planets, which is just a few minutes longer than one disc - they just left off a handful of cues. In an ideal world they'd make the tracks they couldn't fit available to download for free.

“Expanded Archival Collection” was just the product line - it didn’t mean anything about the individual releases.  They used it as branding on Warner Bros releases for a few years.  There was a year or so in the middle that they switched branding (see the red WB anniversary banner on The Matrix Reloaded) but then went back to EAC (see The Matrix Revolutions).  I seem to recall that it fell by the wayside by the time WB stopped licensing scores in 2020, though.

Google reckons it's an archive of historical information/documents. Older things that aren't necessarily needed now, but might be of interest so someone in the future. I think that's important in this context because it could be interpreted as making an expansion that contains alternates/oddities/bonus tracks that not everyone may want, but someone might - a record of how the score came to be.

But for that to work, you've got to be tolerant of materials being present on a set, that aren't necessarily written by the composer.

Per my understanding, Forever's expansion is missing one or two (mostly redundant) cues, so it is definitely not complete.

Very happy to have finally gotten a copy of this as well!

Correct. The final WB-licensed "Expanded Archival Collection" release was Goldsmith's The Swarm in 2020 from LLL -- a great release that's still available from them!

It’s kinda weird that LLL has over 40 copies sitting in their warehouse of a sold out title for years

40?

Gonna assume those were the final final batch, given there was an earlier listing that quickly sold out as well.

Let's hope there'll be box set containing both scores now that the old release is gone…

They recently changed the name of Max back to HBO Max. They seem to be writing their wrongs so I have a slither of hope. Just a slither tho

Are your dms open? The so-so chance the title becomes available a fifth time one of us will send it to you. I think posting its availability in the thread has allowed others to get it before you

I spent hundreds of dollars on this and now they're practically giving them away. I feel outsold, outclassed, outcoiffed and generally outdone in every way.

Thanks to everyone who's been messaging me. But I took a hard look at my finances, and held back on buying this. A trip to Berlin means curtailing other expenses.
