Sharkissimo 1,971
Just watched it. For the life of me, I can't stand Mark Kermode, and his butchering of MIDNIGHT COWBOY properly made John Barry turn in his grave enough times to power a small town. That said, the two Bernard Herrmann suites were the standout, though I've got no idea why they didn't end on the real thing - and instead ended on Danny Elfman's Herrmann-lite banality. All criticisms aside, it was bloody amazing hearing TAXI DRIVER and VERTIGO live with the speakers on. Would have loved to have a heard of good live rendition of Goldsmith's ALIEN, or maybe Klingon Battle from the STAR TREK score. Though I know the later would have been uber-expensive - what with the huge percussion and synth section.

Quintus 5,391
Honestly, I thought the (non-professional) Kermode did an ADMIRABLE job with his mouth organ. Of course it wasn't great, but it was never going to be. It sounded hearty and good with that in mind.In general the BBC Phil did a cracking good job and the program was well worth a watch. Good, unexpected stuff.

They should have just hired a professional. Too many unintentional multiphonics for liking. I agree though, it was a pleasant surprise. It says the concert is running on BBC interactive and BBC iPlayer until the 19th. Is that just the same performance on a loop, or a new set each day? fommes 126
That's funny; at the Ghent concert, they screwed it up, too, by letting some pop music guy play it - one that wasn't trained in it either. Maybe the official sheet music reads: 'must not be played by a hip person, not a professional musician'.
Quintus 5,391
There was some pre-performance backstory offered on it actually; which went some way into explaining why they went with Kermode: it's not even a harmonica in the original recording, apparently. fommes 126
Yeah I know. At Ghent I just figured they put it in as they needed it for Dances with Wolves, anyway.
