Lukas just posted this at FSM.

From John Morgan's Facebook page:

"With sadness, I report my mentor and friend for nearly 40 years, Fred Steiner, has passed on after suffering a stroke recently. He was a musical giant in the world of film music, but never really got the recognition he deserved. He was a first class orchestrator, composer, conductor and music historian. His wonderful wife, Shirley survives him and I think they were married for something like 64 years. Rest in Peace Fred. Thanks for so many wonderful memories."

Very sad to hear this...what an impact he had on Star Trek and many other famous TV shows! He was a wonderful presence at the SPFM film music conferences in the 1990s.

Lukas

Rest in peace.

RIP

Probably my favorite piece by this composer:

By the way, I know this is not the original recording, but I love this arrangement by Dick deBenedictis the most.

Straight away I recognized the name, but didn't make the connection between the name and music until it was detailed here and on other websites. Another one of those who's music I must have heard a lot, but don't nescessarily have knowledge of who composed it. At least, that is where I stand. Did a quick search on YouTube and found some of the Star Trek work Stefan mentioned.

When I heard the one below, yep well known to my ears.

I didn't know Fred Steiner's music well (apart from his iconic Perry Mason theme), but when I read one of Tony Thomas's books years ago the chapter on Fred Steiner was one of the most interesting and amusing. He relates how he plucked up the courage to make an uninvited visit to see his more famous namesake Max Steiner in his youth, to get some advice on composing. When he called on Max the legendary composer was initially reluctant to let Fred in until he received sufficient assurances that the young stranger was not one of his relatives!
