I've seen the first one only. It was good.

I tried watching The Godfather and I felt myself dozing off.

It’s one of those classic films that I have zero interest in finishing. Hell, I dozed off watching The Aviator.

It's about people you'd never meet.

Sir David Lean (who loved The Godfather) said that the measure of good characters is whether you'd like to have dinner with them, and how you'd imagine such a dinner to unfold. To him, the best characters weren't the everyman characters, but rather those which were so larger-than-life ("outsized", as he liked to put it) that you'd "feel privileged to have dinner with" them.

I'd still probably pass on having dinner with these psychopaths. Sonny is likely to have a violent outburst with little provocation, Fredo won't shut up about the most mundane crap, Michael would be too broody, and Vito definitely not.

What does The Aviator have to do with The Godfather?

Jerry, what makes you think that these people are psychopaths?

Not a single thing, except that mrbellamy likes neither.

Hidden figures.

Not bad at all. Really enjoyed the first half and the ending, but in the middle I briefly lost interest and started reading about the countless historical inaccuracies because it was turning into a montage of feel-good moments and I had expected it to be a little more dramatic. It took me way too long to recognise Jim Parsons and I hadn’t recognised Kevin Costner’s voice at all, thought he was Tom Hanks at first… My memory is failing me already.

The score is really interesting and very nice. I can’t remember the last time I heard an opening cue in F major. The female vocals annoyed me at first, but then they suddenly grew on me.

Am I supposed to feel bad that they massacred Sonny? That family was responsible for brutal acts of terror and crime. Next you'll be expecting me to feel bad for the Waynes being murdered because they walked through a bad part of town at night and didn't call a cab or Alfred.

Don't get me wrong, they're fine films. But it's hilarious anyone's kidding themselves into thinking they'd like to dine with the characters.

It's the reason I gave up on Succession. I hated the characters so much.

Did you hate Walter White?

He's not necessarily the sort of bloke I'd want to be chummy with, but his story was compelling enough to keep me hooked. The characters on Succession were just so repugnant and their wah-wah story was so boring, I gave up at Episode 8 of Season 1.

Walter White has his Heisenberg alter ego, who's like an exaggerated supervillain version of himself, and manifests whenever he puts on that signature hat. It even seems to "speak" to him when he looks at it in the dark.

I don't know about Walter White, but at least over the top villains who committed atrocities such as The Joker and Darth Sidious were at least entertaining.

Does it always has to be nonsense to be entertaining?

War Of The Worlds - felt the need to cleanse my palate of the recent, disappointing BBC adaptation with a well-done version. Spielberg conveys the panic, terror and destruction brilliantly (there's little of his traditional 'uplift' here) and Cruise is great as the ordinary guy caught up in extraordinary events.

JW's score is ... pretty low-key.

Walter White AKA 'Heisenberg' is in that great scene chewing tradition of memorable villains. He's actually more of an anti-villain, and it's precisely that complexity which makes the character so intensely fascinating and satisfying. Absolutely brilliant, iconic characterisation.

Agreed, thats whats makes him so incredibly riveting to watch in a TV show.

In real life though Walt is the kinda person you should avoid like the plague.

Image result for ida cinematography

Ida (2013)

Reestablishes cinema as an art form for me. This is my first completely foreign language film. Directed by Pawel Pawlikowski and shot masterfully in glorious 1.37 black and white, Ida is the story of a young prospective nun's discovery of the truth behind her parents death in 60s Poland. The camera hardly ever moves, capturing the essence of each scene effortlessly. It's just gorgeous. 5 / 5

The Bourne Identity (2002)

Actually wasn't as interesting as I thought. Some decent action, but over-the-top at times. I didn't

Black Panther (2018)

It's still a superhero movie, but I really enjoyed this one. No endless barrage of wisecracks, a pair of good villains, and Ludwig Goransson's score provide an added personality and unique identity to the increasingly dry Marvel landscape. 4 / 5

Ant-Man and Ant-Man and the Wasp (2015, 2018)

Gee, these were pretty flat. Paul Rudd is likeable. I preferred the second one- it was a little funnier. Still a lot of kitschy kiddy "superhero" fluff. A pair of barely sufficient "meh" flicks.

Over the top?

Not compared to the sequels.

I have a question for you guys: Is there a website out there where you can search up a film and find out on which streaming platform it's available?

Also, for European films, this is a good database: http://lumierevod.obs.coe.int/

Did someone claim Bourne is hyper-realistic? Is James Bond never over the top? It's supposed to be entertaining, not "interesting".

The action scenes in the first Bourne are just right actually. A bit over the top, without being utterly improbable.

Its a pity this series is now mainly associated with Greengrass' shaky cam/quick edit combo.

Well, if i remember correctly, the first one also featured some shaky cam, but Greengrass took it a bit further and made it shake from start to finish.

Silence - Marty Scorsese

I may have not seen the entire Western canon of cinema, but this is one of the best movies I’ve ever seen, personally. Didn’t enjoy the Irishman as much as I thought I would, still not sure why since I love both Goodfellas and Casino, but still thought it was great. Silence is incredible, and as someone who is in a bit of a constant religious struggle, very challenging.

Even as a film music sic fan I appreciated the lack of real ‘music’ present in the film (sorry if that offends anyone, I’m sure it could be considered music if you wanted to call it that). The sound design used emphasises the titular ‘silence’, especially in the back end.

I think his use of disorienting "documentary" style action is masterful.  It's all his bad imitators that have given him a bad name.

United 93 is brilliant, too.

Yup, and Captain Phillips is one of my favorite films of this decade.  And he's currently working on a Civil War-era American period piece (a Western!) starring Tom Hanks.  Talk about up my alley!  American history + Tom Hanks!
