I'm a fan of part II too, but my favourite will always be the original.

 

We still need to get to part 3, but that film, even though it's really quite good, always feels like something a bit too different to what came before.

1 is a masterpiece, tightly written but still rich, has an emotional core and everything. 2 messes around too much with just reacting to all new situations and doing stuff and doing stuff, and is very clunky with how it sets a lot of things up, 3 is great fun when it's itself, breathes in that world and how it reverses the Doc/Marty dynamic that was a huge part of 1 (young Doc works with Marty so well that by the time he rewatches his future last moments I always almost forget how it "will" (or will it?) end in tragedy) and was just... there in 2 among all the exposition, but it still pays off some of 2's setups like the car crash a bit clunkily.

1 is an all-time classic.  The third act is indeed one of the best ever.

2 is kind of a mess.  My least favorite of the three.  There's little cohesion, the future Hill Valley is corny, and going back to the 50s feels like overkill.

3 is not really in the same league as 1, but it is a whole lot of fun.

Good enough, but not re-watchable because I just can’t bear such depressing stories. This is the first time I got a little bored by Woody Harrelson and that’s saying something because he had plenty of outstanding material to work with, but maybe too many scenes as well. Ella Anderson and Brie Larson are great, though the second half has some pacing issues. I didn’t like Josh Caras and that final scene really felt tacked on.

The score is mostly really good. Very short, but the movie was so harrowing I didn’t care.

First time since theaters, I believe, on Criterion blu. I remembered it so vividly. Anderson’s benchmark production design is unparalleled here. Desplat’s score, a perfect fit. My favorite scene is “The Cold-Blooded Murder of Deputy Vilmos Kovacs.”

The opening of the film was also weak, showing his pathetic family.

Also, after all Marty went thru to get back home, it's hard to believe he would get back in the Delorean with Lloyd to do more time travelling!

It's a good film bookeneded with bad stuff.

Falstaff aka Chimes at Midnight

 

Orson Welles considered this play on a fictional Shakespeare character his personal favorite of all his films. Perhaps the most radical and groundbreaking of all Shakespeare adaptations, the low-budget dramedy has been brilliantly conceived technically (the camerawork and lightning, especially), and the harrowing war scenes have proven especially influential, cited in Branaghs Henry V as well as Mel Gibsons Braveheart.

 

The narrative takes its cues from 'Henry IV', 'Henry V.' and 'Richard II' The focus is on the boastful and hedonist John Falstaff, an overgrown child - Welles himself with evident pleasure - and on his friendship to Henry V, who prefers to spend time with Falstaff carousing rather than acting presidential. As the drama unfolds, Henry becomes king and, now taking his responsibilities seriously, turns away from his fun-loving old friend.

 

Welles himself mentioned disappointed friendship as the central theme of the film, but at the same time it is also about different father figures, about power and pleasure and how these worlds will clash - and its also about age and death (what begins as a fine, low comedy is slowly becoming a moving tragedy).

 

Welles' ingenious cinematic flair is always noticeable here in expressive close-ups, extreme camera perspectives or in the thunderstorm at the Battle of Shrewsbury. In this battle scene, brutality and horror can be drastically experienced in the clash of the stylized-but-realistic images, that are past any romanticization.

 

It's not a JWFan movie, for sure, but any movie that can make me endure Shakespearean prose - even embracing it - belongs to the ages.

Got to see the restoration in 2015 when it was making some festival rounds for his centennial, it's a stunning thing to look at and reasonably tops Kane and Touch of Evil as his best performance. Third Man I guess is in the running too.

Jumanji

 

A very watchable family flick, thanks to fine performances and visual effects that still look good until this day. Horner brings a lot of hornerisms to the score, but it works great within the film. Compared to Henry Jackman's souless, generic score for the 2017 sequel, it's like night and day.

Once Upon A Time In Mexico - more 'south of the border' action funtimes in this Desperado sequel, this time with the addition of the likes of Johnny Depp and Willem Dafoe to the cast. As entertaining as the first. 

Coogan's Bluff - crime drama with Clint Eastwood as an Arizona deputy sheriff sent to New York to bring back a wanted man. Much humour is mined from the clash of Coogan (he walks around in cowboy hat and boots and 'bootlace' tie and in a running gag is continually mistaken for a Texan) with NY's late 60s hippy culture (although it must be said the 'free love' side of it seems to suit him just fine, lol). It's not as action-orientated as the Dirty Harry flicks, but there is a pretty decent bar brawl and an excellent closing motorbike chase.

Ghostbusters (2016)

 

Basically a Paul Feig comedy in a Ghostbusters setting. As someone who wasn't a fan of the originals (I did like the animated show), the backlash from butthurt GB fans was eye-rolling, to say the least.

 

It's a fun movie. It was respectful of the movies that came before it, dug the cameos as well.

Spectre.

 

Skyfall is definitely better. This story wasn’t bad, but a number of things are just off. Christoph Waltz is brilliant, of course, but he should have been in the previous movie. I didn’t like Léa Seydoux as an actress and as the shallow love interest, but I do love the fact that Moneypenny is much more involved in these new entries. Andrew Scott has way too much screen time too, but Monica Bellucci is absolutely fantastic (the way she breathed ‘palazzo Cardenza!)

I’m tempted to say Spectre is the better score. It’s certainly much more powerful and I loved the romantic cues and all the Bond theme variations, though I sometimes had the impression they were trying to make up for something because there were a lot of them here. Dare I say too many? Dear me, what is going on with me? I usually don’t watch more than one franchise film a week to avoid overdoses, but peer pressure left me shaken and stirred.

Strange! To me, it's all the Dalton and Brosnan ones that are boring. Yes, I know some of you hate the Bournification of Bond but I thought it saved the franchise from boredom. The only Craig Bond that disappointed me is Quantum of Solace.

I don’t really understand why they broadcast this one a week after A Shot in the Dark. Oh well. Still not a fan of unnecessary French accents, but I cracked after 15 minutes and didn’t remember Peter Sellers’ voice at all. My God, he's good. Herbert Lom is terrible, but overall, I had a great time watching this absurd movie. Also, first time I’ve heard the word ‘holocaust’ used in a non-World War II context.

The score is really nice, maybe even a little too upbeat, but who could wish for more in these downbeat times? Even liked Julie Andrews. Some bad sound editing, though. Now, does anyone have a rrrrruuum?

Uh huhhhh, you must be the first person online I've encountered who liked the 2016 movie but actively disliked the 80s films. I've known people who enjoyed both versions, but you're a first! What is it about the older ones you disliked and how did the new one rectify it?

Legal issues had kept Bond off-screen for 6 years ... opinion at the time had it that with the end of the Cold War and the advent of political correctness, he was an anachronism with no place in the 90s.
