Why is that, Richard? Why Spectre and not Skyfall like everyone else?

I know I'm not the only one who thinks Casino Royale is the best. Though Skyfall is still very good, and of course one of the best looking films of its time.

Good question.

SPECTRE is not only my favourite Craig Bond, it's in my top 5 favourite Bond films.

It's a lot more fun than SKYFALL, which I think is so poe-faced, and up its own ass with pathos, that I think it's going to collapse under the weight of its self-importence. Granted, SKYFALL is - arguably - better than QOS, but there's so much more for everyone to do, in SPECTRE, especially M, Q, and Moneypenny. It's also got some nifty jokes ("Now I know what 'C' stands for"), and - and most importantly of all - it has Monica Bellucci (sigh :)).

It's not something that I can really explain: I just prefer to watch SPECTRE, over SKYFALL, in the same way that I prefer to watch THE SPY WHO LOVED ME, over THUNDERBALL, or THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN, over LIVE AND LET DIE.

It's better than it's given credit for.

Rewatched CR last night - still a cracking first hour or so, then in the second it begins to suffer from pacing problems ... the poker game is too long (albeit enlivened by the stairwell fight and the poisoning attempt on Bond) then by the time we've had the post-torture recuperation stuff I am frankly all too glad to have the Venice collapsing house action (there are those who reckon it feels tacked on, but it enlivens things considerably for me). The ending with Mr White and That Line is still very cool.

Probably it is time to setup a thread like "What (not self-declared but actual) cult movies do you dislike and why?"

You don't have to like a cult movie, it's cult anyway!

Someday I'll understand what kind of movie exactly do people think can actually have pathos without being accused of "self importance"...

It is, by far, my favourite Craig, Bond film.

I know I'm in the minority, here, but I love it.

I haven't seen the older movies in a while, and remember being a big fan of the Connery ones, but I actually think Spectre is my favorite bond movie. It's definitively my favorite of Craig's. It's the perfect mix of modern and old school bond. It's modern and serious but doesn't take itself quite as seriously as the previous Craig movies (which I like a lot, except QOS), and includes a bit of the tone from the older movies. Also am a big fan of the score.

Definitively agree! Another example is the whole sequence where Q meets Bond in Austria at the Hoffler Klinik, which is then followed by a classic bond action sequence in the snow!

After Skyfall, I remember many people were disappointed with Spectre, but I don't recall why. I liked Skyfall for it showed a Bond clearly deviating from the Dalton and Brosnan movies of which their 'new man' approach I never was a fan of. I also thought they didn't look good, to be honest. I liked Spectre because it's a combination of the new 21th century Bond and '60s Bond (indeed, when Bond was more fun). But above all, I think I particularly liked those two Bond movies (Skyfall and Spectre) because they were directed by Sam Mendes. With him no longer directing Bond, there's a good chance I won't like No Time To Die

Die Another Day is pretty good in the first half, but then it gets stupid. (Yes, I know you meant No Time to Die.)

I didn't get to see Skyfall or SPECTRE under the best viewing circumstances. But I do recall they're very much of a piece. If you don't like one it doesn't get any better for the other. But if you like one I can't see how you can be that put off by the other.

Yes, I was thinking of them Brosnan movies. I shall correct my post.

Too bad it gets stupid. I don't like stupid.

Do me a favour, will you? Throw that down the toilet. Cut out the middle man.

Stay!

I really hate you, right now.

I think I'll call you 'C'...C.

I do remember saying "bring it back in one piece", not "bring back one piece".

A reassuring thing about Craig's Bond is that although he is clearly 'a workout guy', he would still much rather have a Vodka Martini than that rank-looking 'health shake' at the Hoffler Klinik.

Halloween. Still fantastic. Its never really scary but it is intense. It teaches a valuable lesson. When being attacked by a murderous boogyman overkill does not exist.

Ring (not the Lord)

The Japanese movie that inspired Gore Verbinski's The Ring. They're both great, but I think I prefer the American version because it has a creepier atmosphere and a pretty good Zimmer score.

I think, which version you prefer highly depends in which version you saw first. I had watched the original first and then found the american remake rather unnecessary when I saw it.

Case 39 (2009)

Why Zellweger ever had a movie career is a mystery to me. Her rather silly voice takes away all the drama out of a scene. And the little girl that Zellweger takes under her wing can't act.

The Emoji Movie - a child chose it. A friend who endured this with his kids said he fell asleep and was quite glad to have done so. Some people have all the luck. Even my 6 year old nephew seemed bored… Patrick Stewart as a talking poo isn’t nearly as funny as it sounds. When James Corden is the best thing about a movie you know it must be pretty bad (I mean really, how does he have such a successful career?!). Patrick Doyle’s score hits all the expected notes but doesn’t really stick out for good or bad. It did have some weird song which samples Take On Me (which is clearly pop genius) but sampled into a song that was some number of magnitudes less good than the original making you wonder why anyone bothered.

Vivo - this on the other hand was pretty good. Some fun Lin-Manuel Miranda songs and also voicing the lead character. It gets bogged down a bit in the middle when the lead characters get lost in the Everglades but it has a suitably heartwarming ending. Much closer in style and tone to Pixar than other Sony Animation movies and probably about as enjoyable as Luca and I enjoyed it far more than Soul. I’m not sure the songs are top drawer Miranda (they seem more like kid friendly takes on better songs from Hamilton or In the Heights) but his second tier is better than many others beat stuff. It’ll be interesting to hear how how contributions to the (totally unnecessary) Little Mermaid comes out alongside Alan Menken.

Halloween2018 was better than I remember but the savagery of the murders could have been implied rather than shown

Guess that's the stage we're at now ... people complaining that there's killing in a slasher flick. Fucking hell.

Dude. That's SO much worse than promiscuous minors!

L.A. story.

Well, that was pretty interesting, though I only got into it after 10 minutes. Didn’t recognise Steven Martin at all, but all the women are great. Sarah did have one bad moment and her mum sounded like a man, but maybe that was just one of the weirder jokes in the movie that I didn’t really like. I also think it could have done with 20 more minutes, but loved the fantasy element and am feeling quite relaxed and happy now.

The songs are nice and the score is blissfully romantic. There’s some exquisite harp material and funny variations on the 20th Century Fox fanfare and Beethoven’s fifth, and I swear the cue that played during their first kiss rings a bell, but I don’t know why.

I haven't seen that movie in 30 years but it did introduce me to Enya's music. Which would suddenly be EVERYWHERE.

Just watched this for the first time the other day. The violence did catch me off guard for a bit. It’s the only on-screen moment of child murder that I can recall.

Iron Man 3 - a midweek Marvel rewatch. Colourful, cheery fun for the most part (not being mired in the comic 'lore', Shane Black's twist on The Mandarin didn't bother me at all ... it helps that once he's exposed as actually being hapless actor Trevor Slattery, Ben Kingsley's performance is bloody funny).

That's a very good point about Kingsley. He was amazing across the board. I suppose it also matters how much you're invested in the character of the Mandarin from other media. I'm not. Just don't try that crap on Doctor Doom.

I do wonder what I would have thought of the film if I had seen Star Trek: Into Darkness first. With a week or two there were two blockbusters that set up terrorist masterminds and then the twist was that they were both paper tigers set up for the purpose of starting a fake war. But there's a hell of a lot more to enjoy in Iron Man 3 than there is in ST:ID.

All the stuff with the kid was a joy. "Is this the forehead of security" is still one of my favorite Stark lines of all time. This is the best Rhodey movie, right?

Venom - over-harshly reviewed Marvel number with Tom Hardy as investigative journo Eddie Brock, a man transformed when a 'symbiote' creature enters his body. Not perfect by any means, but absolutely fine Saturday-night-with-a-few-beers entertainment. Catching the sequel tomorrow.

Zack Snyder's Justice League

For better or for worse, I finally saw it. But the damn thing shouldn't have been four hours long -- this is pure unadulterated Snyder and writer Chris Terrio excess (like the first 5-6 minutes and the unnecessary epilogue). It gets points for no Cavill CGI'd upper lip, as well as giving back giving screen time for Cyborg and The Flash and fleshing them out properly.

I'm not sure whether a full Snyder cut (at a 2.5 hour length) would've fared much better than the 2017 "Josstice Cut" theatrically. While Whedon has his faults (namely his behavior with the actors during reshoots), he was able to cut out all the Snyder excess and turn out something marginally fun -- even if it wasn't good.

Too bad WB didn't hire Whedon to overhaul the script before shooting and had Snyder direct that instead.

Yes, Snyder's take is long (I watched it over two sessions) but at least it had character development, which was sorely missing from Whedon's version.

Scream 4

There was some recent discussion about the Scream movies on the board, so I decided to finally watch Scream 4.  It's very forgettable.  Being meta about having thinly sketched, interchangeable characters and no reason to exist doesn't actually make those problems go away.  I guess the ending is fairly prescient about the modern desire to be constantly broadcasting your life and going viral, but that doesn't really excuse the mediocrity of the rest of the movie.
