Homecoming: A Christmas Story (1971)

The_Waltons_Homecoming_DVD_cover.jpg

The TV movie that is the pilot for the Waltons.

Great simple Christmas family film with a Jerry Goldsmith score.

I'm surprised that it isn't a common addition in classic Christmas films!

it totally deserves its imdb rating: 8.4

Watched 4 movies last weekend:

Heat: Very unengaging. The hype seemed to be about De Niro and Pacino sharing the screen. I don't particularly like either so that was lost on me.

21 Jump Street - very funny and just great all round fun.

Tombstone - superb cast, and generally competently made. But the story? Didn't seem to be much going on here, except person A getting revenge on Person B, and going round in circles. The final 'charge' also fizzled out unexpectedly -I understand this is based on fact, but a creative liberty here and there could've made this more exciting. Fairly average overall.

The Bourne Legacy - A ridiculous plot (both in simplicity, and in its contrivances) and one of the most boring final chase sequences I've ever seen. And again, it just.... ended. I thought the performances were very good, but that didn't stop this being a rather dull, directionless film.

You give it a 6 because of the main plot? What happened to the Alex that thought it was all about the visual story being told? Action scenes? I don't even recall there being any. This was Once Upon A Time In The West meets The Third Man, absolutely loved it. It's a tried and true story, but the execution here is what's important. Don't remember the score, it was mostly a quiet film, wasn't it?

Sort of, the rest of the movie didn't lead to an experience that warrants more than a 6/10. You don't remember any action scenes or the score? Then you weren't paying attention. Who cares if it's based on real events?! Quiet scenes means no score? OMG! BTW, you have a very simplistic idea of how I judge movies.

Metascore: 61/100

IMBb: 6,4/10

If by action you mean the two instances where he kills a couple people, then I don't consider that action. The finale maybe. I loved how they tried to market this as Clooney action vehicle, 80 second trailer with the one explosion in the movie.

The shoot outs and the motorcycle scenes are no big action scenes but they are action scenes nevertheless. It's then when we see Corbijns' weaknesses.

His action scenes look like those I see in cheap Belgian or Dutch TV crime series. The action, the simple cliché script and the amateurish score almost turned it into a B-movie.

Lincoln. Great film, the script by Tony Kushner is like porn for people who like dialogue and language. The ending could have been handled a bit differently; there was a perfect moment to end it but then it went on for another 5 minutes which I felt was unnecessary, but I won't exactly say useless. The Bilbo character played by Spader was a bit off from the set tone of the film. But I won't hold that against it since the movie on the whole is rather marvelous otherwise.

I watched yesterday "Holiday Inn" (colorized).

I enjoyed it very much. I had watched it once some years ago in black&white.

I wonder if anyone else is into classic hollywood musicals. I love those!

by the way, about Lincoln:

I see an imdb rating of 8.4!!! is it that good? (it didn't seem so to me from the trailer)

it's number 4 in Spielberg's filmography if you arrange it by highest rating.

Will it be easy for a non-American who doesn't know American history to follow the film?

Must be that time of the year again, because we've just watched Elf on tv. Pitch-perfect 5/5 Christmas movie! Feeling all warm inside now, ahhh.

I firmly believe that it's important to keep challenging oneself with film. Especially when Santa Claus is coming to town.

I want to watch that movie because i see it in most lists near the top of Christmas movies but I can't stand Will Ferrell at all !!!

Hitchcock

Finally found a theater that was playing this, so I went and watched it. It was a fiendishly clever and deliciously fun movie. Loved watching Mirren and Hopkins on screen, playing off each other. Very entertaining and enjoyable.

The Angel's Share (Ken Loach, 2012). Quite entertaining. Disappointing, dull ending.

Life of Pi (Ang Lee, 2012). I was really liking it, but there was a point in the latter part of the film when it suddenly got a bit too weird for me. Also I disliked some of the innecesarily CGI animals in the opening credits.

Le capital (Costa-Gavras, 2012). I could get the gist but at times I found it hard to understand what was going on, (which is not a problem of the film but mine). My favourite part was the retired policeman character.

I've seen around 8 films this year and so far none of them made me truly go "aaah, oooh, perfect!". Maybe the closest one was Moonrise Kingdom. But nah, not quite. Fortunately I still have quite a few to see and any of these could become the one great film of the year.

(of course they are 2 totally different films but i wanted to point out that i didn't like Brave so much, as all people are raving about)

The Shining - 8/10

Just that?

BLASPHEMY!!!!!

it's actually waaay more stunning than I remembered. and damn, I couldn't even go to the kitchen to get a glass of water by myself.

Maybe she feels it's only a 7/10 movie, but out of fear of committing blasphemy, she decided to give it a 8/10.

awwww, sounds like you're speaking out of your own experience.

no need. you're already perfect as you are.

Kidnapped (1995) 7.5/10: well-made, good story, although there's a bit too much of wandering across the Scottish Highlands. Armand Assante is a very impressive actor.

Jane Eyre (2006) 8.5/10: wonderful re-telling of the Bronte tale, must be my fav version. Ruth Wilson is just perfect in the title role.

Young Goethe In Love (2010) 9/10: perfect period piece, well-paced, exciting, lavish and very acucurate production design, and based on true events.

The Shining - 8/10

Just that?

BLASPHEMY!!!!!

I'd give it a 4/10

it has some seriously bad acting from both leads. Shelly Duvall gave one of the worst performances in film history, and lets not even talk about that script. What a mess.

That saddest part was Scatman Crothers wasted role. The man was the hero in the book and the film kills him off.

I'm not saying there isn't stuff to admire in the film, there is.

The Shining is one tale that will never be given it's proper due on screen.
