What Is The Last Film You Watched? (Older Films)

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. As a big fan of Once Upon a Time in the West, I'm sorry to say I didn't much care for it. I didn't find the story all that interesting, which makes its peripatetic structure more tiresome than compelling. The film has a rhythm problem, and I wish the acting was serving better characters.

It's shot well enough, but even there, I found it underwhelming. It looks like it was made for about 12 cents, which is kind of the point, I suppose, but there is little of what I like to call over there-ness to the production design or camera work. This just looks empty and drab, which again, could work if the characters or plot were in any way interesting.

I might give the other two in this "trilogy" a shot at some point, but I'm not in a hurry.

I also recently revisited the X-Men trilogy, and stand by my assertion that 3 is much better than its reputation.

Making my way slowly through my new Hitchcock box set, bought after I decided loving The Birds was not enough of an education on the filmmaker, I also viewed North By Northwest and Vertigo, which are fully deserving of the praise they get.

Interesting! I prefer TGTBATU over OUATITW, partially because of the lighter tone, the awesome cat-and-mouse hunt, and the music, although both scores are great. I do think both films can be a tad too slow in places.

NBNW is one of my absolute favourite films. Which box set did you get?

I thought the graveyard scene was quite engaging though .... (but that's pretty much it)

Nice Don Bluth animation film (I prefer An American Tail though) which is elevated much by the masterful Goldsmith score!

Possibly the most beautiful animated film ever made.

True. It's not the worst film ever made. It's still a terrible film.

Couldn’t agree more. And Powell’s score is one of his very best. I would LOVE an expansion.

Hard Target + Split Second - double-bill of 90s action nonsense I went for on Sat night - in the first, Van Dammealangadingdong sports possibly the worst hairstyle in human history as he helps Yancy Butler find out who murdered her father. Directed by John Woo, with enjoyably hammy bad-guy turns from Arnold Vosloo and Lance Henriksen.

In the second Rutger Hauer and Neil Duncan track a heart-ripping killer monster across 2008 London, which is flooded due to global warming (this is inconsistently portrayed ... it's ankle-deep outside the police station, but any shots of the Thames show a normal water level). Co-starring stalwart Brit character actors like Alun Armstrong and Pete Postlethwaite and also Kim Cattrall, who gets her tits out in a shower scene. Which is nice.

I wanted to ask, has anyone seen the animation film The Boy and the World (2013), and if yes, is it understandable by children in 4th grade?

I saw a questionnaire about it and I gathered that it may not be quite..

The Untouchables. I enjoyed it. I can't tell if De Palma's stagey artifice is deliberate, or just lackluster production design. He has a goofy way with crowds, and the blocking of extras, but he studies the best when it comes to camera work. Very cinematographic and readable, but in an interesting way. He builds tension well.

I also enjoyed seeing Charles Martin Smith show up so soon after having just watched American Graffiti (which, unsurprisingly, gets my highest rating).

Of the three De Palma films I've seen this might be the best, then MI, then Scarface, which I just couldn't get into. I'll check out his 70s stuff next.

The Black Phone  - granted there are some quite creepy moments in this horror thriller about a late 70s US neighbourhood terrorised by a child abductor/killer, but overall it didn't feel quite 'there' for me. The ending doesn't scream 'sequel' either, but there's one coming nonetheless so I guess this one was a hit.

The Extended Edition

And? Did you like it?

I prefer the TC myself, because of one scene in the DC. I don't remember the rest added scenes..

I loved it. To me Dances with Wolves is a perfect masterpiece. The more I can have from it the better. I’m absolutely biased about the films I love, this one is no exception. I don’t care about its possible flaws, this movie is special to me, it transports me into another world where a man who is brave and honest and pure at heart can find a strong and kind woman who loves him and follows him through all hardship, can find peace and true friends and can be completely free.

Well, I wouldn't call it a masterpiece, but a most interesting film by Hitchcock nonetheless..

Off to see Connor MacLeod now in the original film! :)

Parts of this are particularly Leonean. Makes me wish De Palma had made a Western at some point.

For his best film from that era, try Carlito's Way.

Was it one of those 4K restorations?

Yes. I have it in 4k.

I slept in the first 15 minutes! :P

I guess I was too tired.

I'll try again to see it tonight.

Oh I like Frenzy. Feels trashier and messier type of Hitchcock. But that's what makes it good. I particularly like the more lived-in lower budget feel.

So, I have watched it now.. (sort of, since I dozed off in some bits! haha

The film itself feels all over the place, without a plot with a purpose.. I don't know how to put it..

Although I don't love it, I still purchased the UHD.

The 4k restoration is exceptional in its video quality. But as far as audio is concerned, I don't now, my ears were hurt!

I watched it with the 5.1 mix (maybe I should have watched it with the stereo one) and often the dialogue was piercing to the ear..

By the way, the Queen song Who wants to live forever, should have been nominated for an Oscar!

Highlander is the raddest movie ever made. There can be only one. There's your plot. It's about concept, and style, and flourish. The shot with the sunglasses, the lightning of the quickening, the glass breaking and the triumphant score. Is it good? I don't know. Who cares? It's amazing it ever got made. We're better off for it. I goddamn love that movie.

The Entity/Frankenhooker - others watch romcoms on Valentine's Day ... I went for a 'based on true events' spookshow in which Barbara Hershey's single mother is harassed by a rapey poltergeist and a cult comedy in which a dude decides to reassemble his girlfriend (after a terrible lawnmower accident, fortunately he keeps her head) from the body parts of exploded prostitutes (due to a form of crack that he invents that, erm, has fatal results far quicker than the 'standard' version).

A wholesome pair of movies, fun for all the family. lol.
