What Is The Last Film You Watched? (Older Films)

Recommended Posts

^Speaking of which, I heard during the week that Gibson confirmed plans for Passion 2 : The Christ Awakens (or whatever it'll be called).

Have about as much interest in it as I did in The Passion Of The Christ - if I was into torture porn, there's plenty of it free on the internet.

Zodiac. Yeah, it is David Fincher's best film. No question about that. What I love about the film is how it never even tries to give you a katharsis or even form any traditional dramatic structure.

That's why I never know what to do with it. Yes, the performances are great, and it's well made, but I still don't see the point of it all. Possibly my least favourite Fincher so far.

I think it is about undoing the serial killer myth created by television and press. And also, in the same vein, undoing the film sub-genre that this myth helped to spawn (starting from Dirty Harry, for instance). As I said, it almost feels more about that than its central idea, if that makes sense. I applaud Fincher for his restraint and distance. And, at the same time, interesting characterizations. It wasn't the film I expected and that's a good thing.

So it's a serial killer movie that isnt about the investigation to catch the serial killer? that's a bit weird.

It is but the investigation goes nowhere. There are a lot dangling threads. Basically they decided not to dramatise the thing too much and only portray things that actually happened. Funnily enough, it makes a really strong film. Think Watchmen of the serial killer movies. ;)

In much the same way that "WOTW", or "SIGNS" were not about an alien invasion of Earth, nor "SPY GAME" was about spying.

I believe it called "cinema of the allegorical".

Yes. "ZODIAC" explores issues that come to fruition in "GONE GIRL".

Well yes, and I appreciate the idea of making it about the non-progress of the investigation, but I just never have the feeling it works as a film.

So there are no scenes where the serial killer leaves tentalizing clues to his next victim? Of scenes where he calls one of the journalists and taunts him?

Zodiac was a real case and yeah all those things happened (and they inspired the plot of Dirty Harry, for instance). But, unlike most films, it doesn't really follow the thriller pattern. Probably because this case was never solved. It's more of a police procedural in a more literal fashion.

I love Zodiac so much.  It's about the people who become obsessed with finding the killer more than it's about the murders themselves. It had easily my favorite Jake Gyllenhaal performance until Nightcrawler came out. Super cool movie.

And yeah, the killer remains a mystery so by definition a movie about the Zodiac killer can't have a traditionally satisfying ending.

Captain America: Civil War

Motivation or reaction of several characters was debatable. 3/10

Alex

Very much so. A step down after the rather excellent Winter Soldier I thought. Batman V Superman, flawed as it is is a lot better.

Did you watch the Director's Cut or the theatrical version?  I missed it in theaters and have actually only ever seen the Director's Cut.

Theatrical cut is great and everything you need.  Director's cut was unnecessary, but still fine.

See the theatrical cut of Zodiac in theaters and loved it.

Recently saw the DC for the first time and the film holds up well. There isn't a huge difference between cuts, but the DC allows you to spend more time in its universe, so there's that.
