I thought Green Lantern was an absolute train wreck. Mark Strong was great casting and that's where my praise begins and ends

Of course maybe they should make a Gay Green Lantern Movie, he can make a green condom with his powers ribbed for his pleasure and his....

Tom Cruise could play him.

Just... stop. You're making my brain bleed.

Whoops. Corrected that. :peepwall:

Kill Bill

A fun, gory pastiche of Tarantino's favorite genres. It's scattershot, with some of Tarantino's signature shots and camera angles, but much more fun than the slog that was Grindhouse. And Uma Thurman should work with Tarantino more, since he seems to be the one giving her good projects to work on.

But how do you really know? Sorry Alex, but your speculation is worthless to me. ;)

Really? Is it? Strange.

Anyway, I speculated Prometheus would end up with 70% at RT. It slowly going down there.

They're not underwhelming to me, they're genuinely bad in terms of direction and writing.

I watched X-Men (my personal favorite) and X2 several times (three times each) and actually came to the opposite conclusion. Yes, they are wonderfully free of the Koray factor. There's no oppressive, dreary, heavy-handed tone and the characters don't take themselves overly serious. Just like in a Snyder film, the characters are slightly self-conscious, almost lacking moral. They don't stare at the sets thinking "I am so deep and profound, the weight of the whole world is resting on my shoulders", like you often see in Japanese Anime. That's why you don't like them, Koray. The third one, The Last Stand (which is made under the new Marvel policy) does have bad direction and writing though. Most people and fans of the first two films agree on that.

ROTFLMAO

What an elegant way to simplify someone's tastes, and yet, I am compelled to agree with you. I think the second film is actually very well scripted and directed. It's not deep or self aware, but it accomplishes its purposes, to be a bad ass superhero film.

I watched Snow White last night. Thought it was pretty entertaining. If you don't mind plot holes better not thought much about, and can tolerate non-existing acting (Snow White) on the one hand and sometimes laughable overacting (Evil Queen) on the other hand, then you should give it a try. Thankfully the love triangle isn't in the foreground (I guess Stewart can't live without having two guys fighting over her ;-))

I have decided to give Ridley Scott a chance and see some of his films that aren't titled Alien or Blade Runner. The Duellists tomorrow, Legend this weekend.

Legend is a very watchable curiosity. A failure by all accounts, but it certainly has a unique quality which is hard to pin down.

Despite being a rather bizarre film it captures the certain magic, mystery and different rules of reality of what is considered Faerie in our folk lore and beliefs, perhaps even too effectively.

The William-Hortsberg-book even has a good second half (which LEGEND somewhat lacks) with an impressive attack of the fable creatures on Darkness's castle. It took 15 years and Peter Jackson to make up for the missed opportunity.

The Duellists is up there with Scott's very best and according to him, one of his two signature films. Don't expect to fall in love with it from the first viewing. It works on a different level. Even though it's thematically rich and evocative, it's the visuals and the passionate direction (the how) what drives this film. If you manage to watch it from the right perspective, you'll be in for quite an experience. By the way, the soundtrack by Howard Blake is fantastic! IMO, Legend is a waist of time (yours and Ridley's) but has some nice backgrounds during the first half of the film and one impressive scene during the second half.

I'll re-watch Legend soon, this is not a great film, but there is something that make it unique.

It has Goldsmith's last masterpiece to boot.

It's god-awful new age-y synth pop and as such ruins the movie even more. With this one, BRAZIL, HOWARD THE DUCK and JAWS 4 under his belt, Sid Sheinberg surely earned his FIRST GRADE PRICK license plate.

It could have a strange chemistry. I know some fans prefer it (some of those who grew up with the Tangerine Dream score, of course).

And Thor, for sure. But silly nostalgia aside, Scott rightfully acknowledged in his dvd commentary that the dramatic insight JGs score provides (i. e. in the dying unicorn scene) is in an altogether different universe. It's european folk lore á la Grimm and Goldsmith responded to that, creating a very impressionistic ethereal score (the burping goblin stuff notwithstanding).

Tangerine Dream responded to the delusions of an aging Universal executive trying desperately to be hip, and whoever tells me that a synth pan pipe is the right musical choice for depicting a unicorn frolicking on a forest glade just needs a thorough cat scan.

I don't know why Scott replaced Jerry's score, I think that it's a wonderful score.

FINALLY!!! Thor comes to Netflix for streaming.

~*~

Not bad. Better than expected.

Noticing The sorely overplayed but not less awesome Foo Fighters' song in the bar scene was hellacool. A few actors were underused, and the actor beneath Laufey's makeup was unrecognizable. Natalie Portman's hotness made the movie worth watching, and Chris Hemsworth simply has screen presence. I kept waiting for Kat Dennings to take that sorry hat off and show us the goods, but the moment never came.

Prometheus

I'll post more elaborate thoughts in the respective thread after I go through the last couple pages of everyone else's opinions. First impression: Good if a bit overly simple. Yes, in a lot of cases less is more, but I would have preferred just a little bit more here. Cinematography and effects are fantastic. Score was good and effective, really only coming in when needed. Acting was serviceable, no one really stood out, but I feel the story being told here doesn't really call for that type of screen presence. Idris Elba was probably my favorite character.

One of the great films of the 70's.

Delliverance. Exciting, taunt, and brutal. I remember how gross it was to see Burt's compound fracture in those earlier years and damn if it's still not just as gross.

There is some terrific acting going on here. Burt Reynolds is intense and maniacal. Jon Voight plays his character with desperation and common decency. He's pushed to do things not in his normal makeup.

I've always liked Ronnie Cox and he plays what he thinks is the voice of reason but he's wrong.

So I wanted to see The Duellists, but I simply don't feel like it so I might see Hatari! or Aguirre, der Zorn Gottes instead right now.

I have a question: did you end up watching any of these movies?

Just saw it. Fun film. Great animal chase scenes. Henry Mancini being catchy as usual.

They say it's a tad too long, what do you guys think? I wouldn't want to start cutting stuff out of this one.

 - Kat Dennings is my kind of girl! Love watching her on 2 Broke Girls. Hopefully she gets more movie roles too.

Yup, the one with the massive rack. 2 Broke Girls is not a great show, but its consistently funny. It's not 'smart' funny (though it has its moments), its 'easy-to-laugh-at-multi-camera-sitcom' funny. The only multicam show I watch, I think.

Anyways, yes, her character in Thor was pointless, and they downplayed her looks by having her in glasses and frumpy sweaters the whole time. Hopefully her character has more to do in the sequel.

Here are some good pics of her:
