The Lobster

The whole movie should have taken place in the hotel. It's a conclusion which oddly enough reminds me of Spielberg's A.I., because that movie starts off reasonably well (first hour in the apartment), but as soon the characters go out into the world, the film loses focus and becomes sorta directionless. About the classical music, a certain quartet piece is so overused in the movie that after a while it becomes no longer effective. As always, your mileage may vary. 4/10

I've heard endless praise effused in his name. Will have to check out his stuff soon to see if he's the real deal.

I enjoy Wes Anderson. Lanthimos, at least from the trailer for his latest film, seems like one of those second-rate Kubrick wannabes.

I am curious though, and will check out The Lobster soon.

It's really ok, Cremers.  We don't judge you for not understanding.  Shhh shhhh, calm down now.  Some films are just too much for simpler minds.

The Voice will be back on soon I hope. Alex will have something to watch.

Oh good!  I do hope he's been able to see Young Sheldon as well.  I'm just glad they make these shows, the masses need their opiates.

At least he's stealing from Kubrick-As-Master-Of-Dark-Comedy instead of just Kubrick-As-Visual-Stylist like other directors.

Which other directors are you talking about, connoisseur Disco?

The first one that comes to mind is Ridley Scott actually, a man very obviously indebted to Kubrick in visual sweep but without much of the wit or pitch black humor.

Who doesn’t wannabe Kubrick? The Lobster heavily evokes A Clockwork Orange for me and I loved it.

Watched the Dirty Harry sequels over the past week or so and now Patriot Games.

Take Ford's Ryan over what came after anytime. Tends to be who I visualise as 'President Ryan', something helped by Air Force One I guess. Shame Baldwin didn't do this and Clear and Present Danger.

Doctor Strange

Colourful, but friggin hard to follow with all the timey wimey stuff. Jazzy Cappuccino score.

Fifty Shades Darker

I like looking at Dakota Johnson's tits and bum in these movies. Very slick looking flick at least. Gave me a good laugh.

That ending was practically a Steven Moffat tribute act

The whole movie was a tribute to CGI.

For what they are, being high production value soft core porn flicks, they're not weird enough. They should be weirder. But I suppose the neurotypical female target audience doesn't like weird. Instead preferring to feel safe and secure in what is familiar. They're the female equivalent to the Fast & Furious movies. And I watch them all.

The Illusionist.

The first half was quite captivating, but then I started to lose interest because it became rather tedious. It's also quite annoying that the film was set in Vienna, but that everyone spoke English with a German accent. Just speak German or English. The ending was rushed and turned out exactly the way I expected it to.

I only knew one score by Philip Glass, Notes On A Scandal, and that one was quite boring. This one, however, was really interesting and effective, orchestral with a nice main theme and quite enjoyable to listen to.

But The Illusionist really is a good movie in its own right.  Should be able to say that sometimes without someone always bringing up The Prestige.  They aren't that similar beyond highest level details.

But whatever, the 2010 Sylvain Chomet film also called The Illusionist is the best of all three!

Thank you. I hated it too. I think you will enjoy The Prestige a lot more. In fact, it's my favorite Nolan movie.

That one was better but had a horrible score.

Not necessarily, but you have to stop the film before the end credits start rolling, because the music immediately completely destroys the whole atmosphere.
