Popular Post Gruesome Son of a Bitch 6,482
I did watch Batman (1989). I didn't exactly have the time, but I made the time, like Captain Kirk always said. As you all know, it's been my favorite movie since it came out. I knew then it was the coolest movie I'd ever see and while I've thoroughly loved other movies in the years since such as Batman Returns and Titanic, Batman's supremacy could never be challenged. Â I'll admit that something like that imprinting on you at a young age certainly gives it an advantage. There is the dreaded nostalgia that comes along with it, but what's wrong with nostalgia? Batman and all its surrounding hype and paraphernalia was awesome. I can recognize when things that I loved as a kid fail to hold up now that I'm in my 30s, but Batman certainly holds up. It's still cool. Â In 2020, we have Batman remastered in 4K and I haven't given it my stamp of approval yet, so here it is. The movie has never looked better. It was always a great-looking flick that has seen gradual improvements on home video. The image is remarkably sharp. It's the colors that have been an issue for some people. There is a teal tint that has been applied at points, notably the finale and while there are some issues with the accuracy of the colors in certain shots (The Joker's suit is the wrong color when seen from above on the cathedral ledge), it actually suits the movie. It looks amazing. Â Â The soundtrack was totally remixed for the 4K release with many new sound effects. While I wasn't exactly thrilled with this, the changes didn't bother me. One thing I did learn was that the digital copy of the movie features the original soundtrack. Â Batman is a movie I always need to have a copy of and the one I've owned the most times on video. If you haven't seen it in a while, it's worth watching the new transfer, even if you don't have a 4K TV. It's 2 hours of just badass music, cinematography, production design and performances, including Jack Nicholson having the time of his life portraying Joker the closest he's ever been to the comics. Â I suppose because Batman was such a massive studio production under tight control from various people, Burton's influence isn't as apparent as in other flicks he's made. You got the balloons, the weird first shot of animated Batman on the roof and the scene where the Batmobile drives through the woods, which I still can't tell how it was done. But he brought Batman to us in the summer of 89 as we'd never seen him in a movie before and it's the way everyone aside from Joel Schumacher circa 1997 has wanted to do him since. The way that the camera stays on a close-up of her, while maintaining a medium shot of him, suggesting that she wishes to commit, but that he's not so sure, symbolically pulling away, is masterful. bollemanneke 3,065
Patriots day.  At first the fucking multitude of characters made it a bit hard to get attached to anyone and I was so fucking captivated that I was looking up the time of the fucking explosions on Wikipedia, but after that I got a bit more interested. Rachel Brosnahan and J. K. Simmons are fucking great, Mark Wahlberg is fucking annoying. Ooh, barack Obama… Those were the days. Shootout, nice, didn’t see that coming. Katherine’s interrogation is kind of cool. The speeches at the end are sickening and ridiculous. The score is harmless. A track title from Gone Girl summarises it better than I ever could: Background Noise.
