The 2011 concerts will only take place in London and Los Angeles, but the 2012 concerts will be a worldwide tour. The list of cues that will be featured has not been revealed yet, although we know that Gerudo Valley is included, as well as a Boss Battle Medley (see here). As far as I know, the only way to get the CD of the symphony is by buying the Skyward Sword special edition, though that might change in the future.

The concerts coming to Los Angeles and London later this month are going to be special. We've seen the previews and watched the videos, but Jeron Moore, the producer of the Legend of Zelda concerts, keeps giving us more to look forward to. The new news? The Zelda 2012 world tour will feature a four-part symphony. Those who managed to get the tickets for the two shows this month will be able to hear two parts of this symphony.

 

We don't know which songs will be featured, but Moore seems to be pretty pleased with them.

Fans have a lot to look forward to between these commemorative shows and the upcoming world tour in 2012, which will include a full length four-movement symphony. EDIT: Below, I listed all the pieces that were performed during those concerts. For the two symphonic movements that appeared in both the 25th Anniversary Symphony and the Symphony Of The Goddesses (the The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess ones), I only listed them in the second edition (because they were always meant to be part of the full symphony, and were only included in the 25th Anniversary Symphony as a preview of sorts). Regarding the other two pieces appearing in more than one edition of the symphony (Gerudo Valley and Kakariko Village), I only listed them in the first edition program).

 

 

THE LEGEND OF ZELDA - 25TH ANNIVERSARY SYMPHONY

PROGRAM

 

This was the first edition of the Symphony, created, as its title indicates, for the 25th anniversary of the The Legend Of Zelda series in 2011. You can find the program here (the Encore is not listed, though, nor is the Ballad Of The Goddess piece, which seems to be exclusive to the CD that was released with Skyward Sword). 01. The Legend Of Zelda Main Theme Medley (04:25)

As the title indicates, this piece is basically variations on the main theme of the series. The first half of the piece is a slow and solemn rendition of the theme, then interrupted by the A Link To The Past overture, making way for another more robust and slightly faster rendition of the series' main theme.

This piece also appeared in the 30th Anniversary Symphony concert.

02. Kakariko Village - Calm And Hope (2:45)

For some weird reason, this piece is labelled as the Twilight Princess Theme, even though it's the same version as the one that first appeared in A Link To The Past. It does include Calm And Hope from Twilight Princess, though.

This piece also appeared in the Symphony Of The Goddesses concert.

03. Hyrule Castle Theme (2:10)

The Hyrule Castle theme from A Link To The Past.

This piece also appeared in the 30th Anniversary Symphony concert.

04. Ganondorf's Theme (4:30)

A piece centered on music from Ocarina Of Time revolving around Ganondorf: Ganon's Tower, Ganondorf's Theme, Ganondorf Battle and Final Ganon Battle.

05. Princess Zelda's Theme (2:40)

A short concert suite of the princess' theme.

This piece also appeared in the 30th Anniversary Symphony concert.

06. Boss Battle Medley (6:20)

The medley begins with the Mini-Boss theme from Ocarina Of Time and segues into the King Dodongo battle theme from the same game. It leads directly into the Molgera theme from The Wind Waker, followed by the second Boss Battle theme from Spirit Tracks and finally the one from Twilight Princess.

This piece also appeared in the Master Quest and 30th Anniversary Symphony concerts.

07. Hyrule Field (2:25)

The Hyrule Field theme from Ocarina Of Time.

This piece was given a new, longer arrangement in the 30th Anniversary Symphony concert (more on that below).

The Gerudo Valley theme from Ocarina Of Time.

This piece was performed as an Encore in the Symphony Of The Goddesses concert, and was in the main program of the Second Quest, Master Quest and 30th Anniversary Symphony concerts.

09. Great Fairy's Fountain (3:00)

The Fairy Fountain theme from A Link To The Past.

This piece was given a new, shorter arrangement for the Symphony Of The Goddesses concert, which also appeared in the Master Quest concert (more on that below).

This piece also appeared in the 30th Anniversary Symphony concert.

10. Ballad Of The Goddess (2:05)

The main theme from Skyward Sword. That piece is exclusive to the 25th Anniversary Symphony CD: it was not performed during the concert (as far as I know).

11. The Legend Of Zelda 25th Anniversary Medley (8:05)

A pretty lenghty medley that features music from various Zelda games. It starts off with the Triforce Room music from A Link To The Past, leading directly into the Spirit Train Field cue from Spirit Tracks. Following this is the Dragon Roost Island theme from The Wind Waker. The music then slowly fades away with a stirring rendition of the main theme from the series... before coming back with the Dark Overworld theme from A Link To The Past in all its bombast, which segues into another statement of the series' main theme, soon replaced by Princess Zelda's theme. The piece concludes with one last statement of the The Legend Of Zelda theme.

Parts from that medley were integrated into other pieces from the following concerts (The Creation Of Hyrule, A Link To The Past Symphonic Movement, etc.)

12. The Legend Of Zelda: Selected Shorts Suite (4:00)

As indicated by the title, this is a medley of various shorts medley from the Zelda games. This includes the Dungeon theme from The Legend Of Zelda followed by the Final Dungeon theme from the same game, segueing into the Lost Woods theme from A Link To The Past. It continues with the Dungeon theme from A Link To The Past, later replaced by the Inside A House theme from Ocarina Of Time, making way for the Mayor's Office theme from Majora's Mask and the Hyrule Castle theme from Ocarina Of Timealong with the Milk Bar theme from Majora's Mask. The suite ends with the Great Victory! cue from A Link To The Past.

This piece also appeared in the 30th Anniversary Symphony concert.

13. Ocarina Melody Suite

Not so much a suite, but rather short statements of all the Ocarina melodies from Ocarina Of Time and Majora's Mask used to present the various instruments in the orchestra. It includes all 19 Ocarina melodies in that order:

THE LEGEND OF ZELDA - SYMPHONY OF THE GODDESSES

PROGRAM

 

This is the second edition of the concert, created for the 2012 tour (since the 25th anniversary was then over). The program was completely reworked, with only a few pieces from the first edition making a reappearance, the rest being completely new material. This time, it was structured as a real symphony, with an overture, four movements, interludes and a finale. Of the first edition, only remained the The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess symphonic movements, as well as Kakariko Village, Great Fairy's Fountain(though it was given a new arrangement) and Gerudo Valley sometimes appearing as an Encore. 01. Overture (4:10)

First heard during E3 2011 (when the symphony was first announced), that piece starts with the The Legend Of Zelda main theme, then segues into Ganondorf's theme, followed by Princess Zelda's theme, before continuing with the Hyrule Field theme from Twilight Princess. The piece concludes with a short statement of Ballad Of The Goddessfrom Skyward Sword.

This piece also appeared in the Second Quest and Master Quest concerts.

04. Prelude - The Creation Of Hyrule (3:25)

The first half of this piece is basically the Legend Of Hyrule music from Ocarina Of Time, while the second half is a reprise of the series' main theme rendition heard in the middle of the 25th Anniversary Medley, only this time with choir!

This piece also appeared in the Second Quest and Master Quest concerts.

05. Movement I - Ocarina Of Time (12:00)

The first movement of the symphony revolves around music from the fifth entry in the series. It opens with the Enter Ganondorf cue, quickly followed by statements of the series' main theme, Ganondorf's theme and Zelda's Lullaby. Coming next are the Deku Tree theme and a majestic rendition of the Ocarina Of Time title screen music, as well as the Hyrule Field and Lost Woods themes. The second half of the movement gives us renditions of Sheik's theme, the Ganondorf Battle theme and the Final battle theme.

This piece also appeared in the Second Quest and Master Quest concerts.

06. Movement II - The Wind Waker (10:30)

That movement begins with the Legend Of The Hero cue, making way for the Outset Island theme which is followed by the Departure music. The Pirate Ship cue then comes in, leading to the Reunion With Sister cue and a grandiose rendition of the Great Sea theme. Halfway through the piece, the Zelda's Awakening cue is heard and segues directly into the Hero Of The Wind cue. The movement ends with both the Ganondorf Battle theme and a rendition of The Wind Waker main theme.

This movement, along with the Twilight Princess one, are the only two pieces that have appeared in every edition of the symphony.

07. Intermezzo - Great Fairy's Fountain (2:30)

This cue was given a new arrangement for this concert. The resulting piece is a shorter and grander rendition of the theme compared to its 25th Anniversary Symphonycounterpart.

This piece also appeared in the Master Quest concert.

08. Movement III - Twilight Princess (10:30)

Opening this movement is the Twilight Princess title screen music. It segues into the Lamentation Of Spirits theme, which is followed by Midna's theme. Hyrule Field then shows up with a robust rendition that is interrupted by the Seven Sages' theme leading to the Ganondorf Battle theme. The movement concludes with Princess Zelda's theme from the second End Credits. This movement, along with the The Wind Waker one, are the only two pieces that have appeared in every edition of the symphony.

09. Movement IV - A Link To The Past & Finale (12:30)

The movement opens with Time Of The Falling Rain, quickly making way for the Hyrule Castle theme (with choir!). Hints of the Dark Overworld theme are heard before Princess Zelda's theme steps in. After a brief rendition of the series' main theme, it is replaced by the Sanctuary theme, soon followed by the Battle With Aghanim music. The second half of the movement begins with the Dark Overworld theme (with a rendition quite similar to the 25th Anniversary Medley, a bit lenghtier) and continues with the Ganon Battle music, with strains of the main theme weaved in. Princess Zelda's theme then appears, and segues into the End Credits music. The last 2 minutes of the movement (the Finale) are basically a variation of the main theme statement heard in the overture of the symphony (with extra choir).

This piece also appeared in the Second Quest and Master Quest concerts.

01. Link's Awakening Medley (8:00)

This medley starts off with the Prologue cue and continues with the Sword Search cue while the Ballad Of The Wind Fish sung by choir plays as a counterpoint. Mabe's Village theme then pops up, quickly making way for the Tal-Tal Heights theme in all its majestic beauty. After a brief rendition of the Final Boss Defeated cue, the Ballad Of The Wind Fish is heard and concludes the piece.

NEW PIECES

 

This fourth edition, which was performed during the 2015 and 2016 seasons, added three new pieces to the symphony repertoire: an intermezzo presenting the Temple Of Time cue from Ocarina Of Time, a new Majora's Mask medley and an A Link Between Worlds medley featuring the Hyrule Castle theme and the Lorule Castle theme (that piece replaced the Majora's Mask medley during the 2016 season). This new intermezzo presents a rendition of the Temple Of Time cue from Ocarina Of Time, first performed by the choir, then by the orchestra, with the choir later joining in for a grand finale.

02. Majora's Mask Medley #2 (6:40)

The piece starts with a lengthy rendition the Song Of Healing, which then segues into the Termina Field theme. After that, we are treated with variations on the Deku Palace music, ending rather abruptly to make way for the Song Of Time, leading us into a rendition of First Day version of the Clock Town theme, which keeps on building and building and ends on a triumphant note.

03. A Link Between Worlds (4:00)

This is a short medley combining both the Hyrule Castle theme from A Link To The Past and the Lorule Castle theme from A Link Between Worlds. The piece starts with hints of the Lorule Castle theme, quickly replaced by the Hyrule Castle theme which is given a formal rendition in all its pompous glory. It is followed by a full-length rendition of the Lorule Castle which transitions flawlessly into the B phrase of the Hyrule Castle theme, bringing the piece to its conclusion.

THE LEGEND OF ZELDA - 30TH ANNIVERSARY SYMPHONY

NEW PIECES

 

Performed in 2016 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the series, this fifth edition added four new pieces to the repertoire: the first one is a lengthier arrangement of the Hyrule Field cue from Ocarina Of Time, the second piece is a straight rendition of the end credits music from Skyward Sword, the third one is a medley that includes music from A Link Between Worlds and Tri Force Heroes, and finally the last piece is a medley created specifically for the 30th anniversary with music from A Link's Awakening, The Adventure Of Link, Spirit Tracks, Ocarina Of Time, Majora's Mask and A Link To The Past. A recording of that concert was made available on a CD release.

 

 

01. Hyrule Field (03:30)

For this concert, the Hyrule Field cue from Ocarina Of Time was given a lengthier arrangement compared to its 25th Anniversary Symphony counterpart. The piece itself sounds roughly the same, with the same orchestration and all the various phrases heard in the cue, though some sections are presented in a different order, others are repeated more (or less) than they were in the previous arrangement, etc.

02. Skyward Sword Staff Roll (07:25)

As indicated by its title, this piece basically consists in a performance of the end credits music from Skyward Sword. After a bombastic intro, we are given a lenghty, melancholic statement of the Ballad Of The Goddess theme, which keeps on building, becoming more and more determined until it makes way for the The Legend Of Zelda theme in an uplifting setting. The melody then fades away, and is replaced by the Skyloft theme. This bucolic tune slowly transitions into yet another rendition of the Ballad Of The Goddess theme, bigger than ever, with the choir joining in. Finally, the bombastic intro heard at the beginning of the piece returns at the end of it, bringing it to a close.

03. A Link Between Worlds & Tri Force Heroes Medley (06:50)

Opening this piece is a grand choral rendition of Yuga's theme from A Link Between Worlds. It segues into the Mother Maimai theme, and continues with Hilda's theme, which builds to a majestic performance of the Lorule Castle theme with choir. Once it ends, the Riverside cue from Tri Force Heroes takes its place. Following this is the Boss Battle theme from the same game as well as the Main Theme (also featuring choir), before a glorious finale concludes this medley.

04. The Legend Of Zelda 30th Anniversary Medley (08:40)

A newly created medley that includes music from various games from the series. This medley starts with a short Ballad Of The Windfish rendition from A Link's Awakening, followed after a transitional passage by the Palace theme from The Adventure Of Link. We then get the Overworld theme from Spirit Tracks, the joyous music leading us into the Sun's Song from Ocarina Of Time which acts as a brief intro to the First Day version of the Clock Town theme from Majora's Mask. It is punctuated by the Tal Tal Heights cue from A Link's Awakening seguing flawlessly into the Dark Overworld theme from A Link To The Past. Finally, after a woodwind passage, we get a soft rendition of the Song Of Awakening from A Link's Awakening along with the Staff Roll music from the same game.

NEW PIECES

 

Three new pieces were apparently added to the 2017 edition of the symphony: an updated arrangement of the Overture, a piece featuring music from Breath Of The Wild and a new symphonic movement revolving around material from Skyward Sword. When is the CD released?

Gerudo Valley sounds great, but I wouldn't have recognised it immediately, had it not be labelled "Gerudo Valley". I'm talking Gerudo Valley from OoT.

I have listened to several pieces from the suite... the arrangement are really good, and all in all the orchestra was up to the task (technically speaking)... but I noticed many flubbed notes, rhythmic inconsistencies etc.... let alone some awkward phrasing from the choir (I mean, breathing between the upbeat and the beginning of the next bar? really??)... I'll attribute that to a lack of appropriate rehearsal time. Sadly, in my experience that isn't really uncommon.

Altogether, it doesn't have the epic atmosphere of Ocarina Of Time, but in its own way, I can enjoy it more than OoT. It's more exotic, and I love that.

Well think about how much more you can scrutinize the performance in a recording... If the parts aren't in sync you can hear it again and again and all of a sudden it sticks out like a sore thumb. Obviously in a live performance scenario those kinds of things are more forgivable. I don't blame them for wanting a perfect take, they are selling this thing after all (well actually they're giving it away with the game, but still, professionalism).

Also, I'm listening to the full 25th Anniversary CD now (yeah, yeah - I'll get the real thing, the game is already pre-ordered). It's probably the best orchestral Zelda compilation I've ever heard. Completely stunning. I'll do something for the review forum.

I guess there hasn't been a full CD per se, but I'm talking about all the orchestral suites and such that have come out over the years.

And I LOVE Hyrule Symphony. Such intimacy in the string orchestra arrangements (with occasional help from piano, harp and ocarina). It's certainly not an accurate reproduction of OOT's music, nor is it an epic, blockbuster standardization. It's just something very different and wonderful.

So, how long is the CD? 45 minutes, right?

Yeah. A good length, I think. It's too bad about the great stuff that wasn't included, like "Hyrule Castle," but the arrangement as is works really well.

The Wind Waker suite is my favourite... Not sure why, but the WW soundtrack is probably my personal favourite of the bunch. I have great feelings towards that game. Also love that Dragonroost Island gets a hearty rendition in the "25th Anniversary Medley".

Also up there: the 30 seconds or so of the Ganon fight in the Twilight Princess suite. Brutal, I love it.
