Had no idea an official CD for this score got released back in the summer, but there it is! What's strange to me is that in the reviews they say it is the "complete" score, when how could it possibly when it is less than 80 minutes of music on just 1 CD, and the film is pushing 2 and a half hours?! Am I missing something here? lol.

Well this film has a quite a varied running time.

There is a Giorgio Moroder version of this film!!?? Where is the John Williams version, I ask you?

Yes, there is. In fact, Moroder's restoration was a landmark piece of work, not only creating new music for it, but also cleaning up the visuals with certain colour filters applied.

Funny story....when I was in Ghent this year, I talked to Abel Korzeniowski (who also did a score to METROPOLIS....a fantastic one, btw) backstage, where also Giorgio Moroder was. Apparently, they had talked about their mutual background and that Korzeniowski had, in fact, used Moroder's cut and restoration for his own score.

By the way, there was also a previous score release of Huppertz' original back in the 90's, on the RCA label. But it was pulled early, so few copies remain. It's a rarity.

I have this and I have a rip from the bluray soundtrack. I've listened to the bluray rip many times and watched the bluray a number of times as well. Going off the track times, I'd say the CD is missing a large amount of music after the dance scene with the false Maria. I've not listened to the CD fully yet but it seems complete up until that point. I've not listened in detail after that point to be fair but there is definitely music missing. There's a good 40 minutes + after the dance on the bluray score. There isn't a track above 3 minutes in length after "Der Tanz".

Got to say that I absolutely love this score. Was like a lightening bolt when I first heard it. I bought the bluray of the so-called "Complete Metropolis" having never seen any version of it. The music and visuals blew me away instantly.

Just checked two tracks. There is a large amount of music missing between "Freder und Josaphat" and "Der Aufstand der Arbeiter". The music that has been cut from the CD is largely variations on Dies Irae and the Freder/Maria love theme with the false Maria theme woven in. It's essentially the music that scores the continued influence of False Maria on the upper classes and workers and Freder realising that the true Maria has been captured.

It's a big enough chunk to account for the majority if not all of the omissions but I'll post again if I find anything else.

In fact, Moroder's restoration was a landmark piece of crap, not only creating a terrible, completely inappropriate "score" for it, but also destroying the visuals with repulsing color filters applied.

I had the misfortune of watching it in the theater when it was released (1984), and it was one of the worst cinematic experiences of my life.

Wasn't that version nominated for the Razzie's for both the score and the actual film?

Worst original song and score only. It lost to Bolero by Peter Bernstein and Elmer Bernstein and the song "Drinkenstein" from RHINESTONE Words and Music by Dolly Parton. :P

I would agree that some of the songs don't work very well, like that awful Bonnie Tyler stuff.

However, there were some scenes with Moroder's pure underscore which were brilliant. The factory scene, for example, is as effective as the original Huppertz score for that scene, IMO.

Regardless of colour filters (I think they worked in some scenes, others not so much), there's no denying the immense contribution that Moroder had in restoring the visuals.

Not really.

The 1984 version is not very well regarded anymore. Subsequent restorations have been done when copies of the film with previously missing scenes were discovered, and they all stayed away from the changes Moroder made to make the film palatable to the Miami Vice crowd...

Irrespective of whether you like the film or not Moroder's Metropolis drew attention to the plight of many old films that being if they weren't looked after properly or restored they WOULD be lost forever.

Many people only see the film in its final form which detracts, I think, from what it acheived as far as film restorations go.

Personally I like the Moroder version. I especially love the score where Rotwang's hand comes down behind Maria over the candle as well as the underscore for Rotwang's party.

For anyone who DOES like the Moroder's version it's being released onto Blu-ray this month.

I like to think that in another 50 years time someone will step up to attempt to restore Star Wars to its original form, as long as they are not related to GL.

Anything goes.

Is Moroder still active? maybe he can try and restore Star Wars?
