I can name only 6 i like without reservations. E. T. isn't one of them but then i don't think it's a film with much replay value - you have your moments with it when you're a child and afterwards it's 'cherish the memories'.

E.T. is one of his most intelligently directed films.

I have seen it at least once in the last years and found parts of it terribly calculated (especially the latter parts) - as a kid, i cried. So i almost regretted seeing it again.

In that sense it's almost like a Charlie Brown cartoon, keeping the movie at a child's level. And it's one of most vivid portraits of a house as seen through the eyes of a child that I've ever seen. The feeling for the place and atmosphere are terrific. Completely absorbing ambiance

Also, Spielberg knows he's basically making a movie for children. So he keeps the narrative simple.

That goes without saying. The more quiet children scenes at the beginning are indeed wonderfully intuitive, but when the big emotional strokes american style enter, it feels like manipulative tv.

And as much as i love the Williams score on its own, the hellraising finale sure is an acquired taste in tandem with the movie.

Schindler's List is my favorite movie in general, not just my favorite Spielberg movie. I don't see what's wrong with that being their favorite.

Do you suffer from depression?

There are three movies on that list that I have never seen. Their #1 movie is one; the other two start with M.

You should take time to see Minority Report and Munich, they are good films

My favorite Spielberg films would probably fall something like this:

1. Raiders of the Lost Ark

2. E.T.

3. Catch Me If You Can

4. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

5. Minority Report

6. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom

7. Schindler's List

8. The Sugarland Express

9. War of the Worlds

10. Jurassic Park

Honorable mention to: Jaws, Saving Private Ryan

At this point, I'm not sure if War Horse should be on the list, I need to give it more time to sink in.

Also, I have yet to see Munich, Amistad, or The Color Purple.

My favorites, of what I have seen:

1. "Jaws"

2. "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade"

3. "E.T."

4. "Duel"

Close Encounters and "Jurassic Park" get honorable mentions, the last one less so.

That's it. I no longer have interest in new Speilberg films, so that's it for anything from now until his death. I also have zero interest in seeing older films except ones I've seen before.

I like it because everything involved is mostly perfect. The cinematography, music, acting, directing, scripting. There are flaws in the ending (mainly out of Liam Neeson's performance) but otherwise it's perfect in my mind.

Sorry, Quint, but the most iconic Spielberg titles are represented here, the list would've been rubbish if The Lost World was numero uno, followed by Hook and Always, or something. Nice to see they included Catch Me If You Can, which is one of his better movies from his last period.

Minority Report is way too glossy and try-hard to be even mentioned at all. It's a fake, a counterfeit. It has Tom Cruise and Colin Farrell at their most irritating. Empire of the Sun is a significantly more accomplished film than Catch Me If You Can - a movie I like, incidentally - and again, for all it's mastery and achievement: Schindler's List ranked at number 1 is waaaaay off. I agree 100% with Mark Kermode on this I'm afraid.

But aren't these lists opinion, anyway? I find MR, for all its faults, much more stimulating intellectually than CMIYC. Even WOTW with its terrible third act runs circles around it, for me that is.

Of course it's apples and oranges, but going through the motions can be fun ;)

Besides, there is some half decent debate to be had between those who rate Schindler's over something like Jaws, E.T. and Raiders.

I agree, but I recognize the consensus the list is trying to put forward, and let's face it, Empire Of The Sun is generally seen as a failure - it only got two mentions at the recent Film Score Monthly best Spielberg movie thread - so I would be surprised if they mentioned it here or elsewhere. I think most people will think it's a rather fair list. Rubbish would be: Huh? What? That African slave movie beats Raiders and Jaws?! Get out of here!

What I mean is, the usual suspects are there. The list features no surprises.

With including almost any post 2000- film? This is a populist list! :sarcasm:

Seriously, it would be more coinstructive to make a "What could have been"-list with suggestions how it could be made better. Maybe i'll do a thread on it and start with.... ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE.

Munich doesn't belong in any discussion about best SS films, now worst...absolutely.

I didn't think that list was bad honestly, in fact I can agree with many of those choices. Schindler's List is my favourite Spielberg film. Its just a beautifully crafted movie that never fails to touch my heart. I don't see why a list with SL on top should be considered shit :P

Whrere the hell is A.I.?

Gimme an effing break. It's one of the finest films of the last decade.

That would be utterly pointless. A.I. is practically perfect in every way.

I will never be able to understand how some people get riled up over other people's list of favourites. This one seemed perfectly fine to me, I even agreed with several of the picks and placements.

I believe we've done a 'favourite Spielberg film' list before, but just for fun and giggles, here's my Top 10 again, as it currently stands (except for the top spots, these things change continually):

1. SCHINDLER'S LIST

2. JURASSIC PARK

3. A.I.

4. E.T.

5. CLOSE ENCOUNTERS

6. JAWS

7. RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK

8. EMPIRE OF THE SUN

9. MUNICH

10. SAVING PRIVATE RYAN

you're absolute nuts, it's his worst film of this century, except for AI which is an awful film, truly awful.

but at least I understand now that your taste in SS is skewed in a different direction than mine.
