Yeah, isn't he -- more or less? This is the first (non-film music) thing he's done in 10 years, and before that, there was another huge gap. That qualifies as semi-retirement, at the very least. Not much film music either, except ALEXANDER and EL GRECO. That sucks.

He's pretty much retired. No way you can count his current output as being "semi-retired". It's more like "Fully-retired but with a musical hobby".

Any sign of his "El Greco" soundtrack ever getting a wide release?

Vangelis really knew his shit back in the day. Listen to this track from 1979, the long intro would be perfect for the opening scene (some kind of vista of an industrial city) of Blade Runner 2.

Great opening, but it's such a bizarre track once Jon joins in! For me their second album (The Friends of Mr. Cairo) was LIGHT years ahead of all their other efforts. It's an incredible album. State of Independance is a real highlight, but the whole thing is superb.

Really? I think it's beautiful, especially the harmonies created with ring modulation. The music is so open and dynamic. I like The Friends Of Mr. Cairo too, even though it tends to be more poppy and radio friendly. The only album of theirs that I didn't buy into was Page Of Life. I don't even have it.

:P

Aside from the entire Friends of Mr Cairo album (which I love), I think the most successful Jon and Vangelis material is Jon's contributions to the 1980 album "See You Later". He only sings on the two long tracks (side two of the vinyl version), and even then he only sings for a couple of minutes on each song, but it's terrific stuff. I also think his harp playing on the last track of Opera Sauvage is beautiful. Thet entire track, Flammants Roses (or something like that) is extremely lovely.

I feel like a Chaac, but those little contributions on 'See You Later' are my least favorite moments on what is otherwise an interesting musical venture for Vangelis. When the album was released in 1980, I wasn't a fan of Vangelis' futurama (hope you know what I mean) but now I am. I can't take it anymore ... Too loud, too loud ... Love it! Heck, I even bought a sampled Korg KR55 (vintage drumcomputer) from http://www.forgottenkeys.co.uk/ because of it!

Ah yes, Opera Sauvage. Flammants Roses is a good track indeed. It somehow reminds me of Blade Runner*, just like my favorite moment on the album does, which is Rêve (the very big Fender Rhodes piece). Does Jon sing on this album too? I know he plays harp on it, like you said.

* it's because of similar sounds and soloing, of course

He doesn't sing on Opera Sauvage (unless there's something I'm forgetting). I really love the whole See You Later album. It is all very obviously Vangelis, and yet the overall style is something he has never done before or since. It's a unique album. Have you heard the out-take tracks from that album? One of them (called Fertilization) is wonderful stuff. You can find it on You Tube with a rather interesting video someone created for it.
