Beverly Hills, CA – A new compilation of music centered around Academy Award®-winning composer Hans Zimmer’s theme for this year’s Oscar® telecast will be downloadable from iTunes right after the show. Titled “The 84th Academy Awards – Celebrate the Music,” the collection includes the show’s musical theme plus six unique, inventive interpretations of his theme by other artists, and a moving “In Memoriam” choral rendition of “What a Wonderful World.”

In addition to both of the 84th Academy Awards music directors – Zimmer and musician/producer/composer Pharrell Williams (of The Neptunes) – the extraordinary group of international artists who contributed their talents includes: percussionist/drummer/composer Sheila E.; Grammy-winning double bass player/singer Esperanza Spalding; guitarist/composer Stephane Wrembel, who wrote and played the soundtrack for “Midnight in Paris”; three-time Oscar-winning composer Giorgio Moroder; two-time Oscar winning composer/musician A.R. Rahman; violin/cello virtuosi Ann Marie Calhoun and Martin Tillman; Dutch hit remixer/ composer/electronic musician Junkie XL; and multiple Grammy-winning British musician/producer Peter Asher.

Each musician created their own piece of music inspired by or derived from Zimmer’s basic thematic framework. The compilation of these unique interpretations of the theme will be available for download from iTunes.com/oscars at 9 p.m. Pacific Time tonight. All proceeds will benefit music-related programs at the future Academy Museum of Motion Pictures.

Didn't notice a thing even after they spotlighted the musicians in the balcony... Though I recognized the female violinist; she was part of the Sherlock Holmes soundtrack:

And some more music from HZ:

In it's own right I'm sure the music is fine, but it's modernism clashed very awkwardly with the old fashion class that the rest of the ceremony tried to establish.

That said, I would probably get this if money wasn't a factor.

The theme sounds like a cross over of Mombasa/Sherlock Holmes (but completely recked with Inception synths), modernized Lion King progressions and of course the usual Thin Red Line stuff...

Hey, who needs to listen to the music when you can play it!!!!

That gave me a good laugh.

Fair enough, but thats a lot of rest for the trumpets. Doug Adams posted that pic up btw and I just found it amusing.

A snapshot of the first page of one instrument's music doesn't accurately represent the entire score...

Sorry, but I have seen a lot of Hans Zimmer's scores on papers and he's a master of rests :).
