Conan The Barbarian- Original OR Re-Recording?

  1. 1. Now that both the Tadlow re-recording and the Intrada release of the original complete recordings are available, which one do you prefer?

    • The 3 CD original recording released by Intrada! The original performance is still the most spirited and memorable!
      6
    • The 2 CD Tadlow re-recording! The performance is better overall and is closer to how it was originally intended!
      11
    • I love BOTH versions and can't decide! Both have their own strengths and weaknesses, and both will get played equally!

    • Ick! People really like this score? Not me!

I know I swore up and down that having the Tadlow removes the need to own the complete OST, but I bought it anyways. I'll certainly be deleting the Varese download from my iPod. There are a few spots on the Tadlow that I didn't like as much, by virtue of some instruments being mixed lower than their counterparts on the OST that we had at the time, but I can forgive such differences as a result of the album being the complete score.

I just know I'm going to want to listen to one version and hastily select a different one, having both versions on the iPod. I did that last month with Destroyer -- I wanted to listen to the Tadlow, and when it was over I wondered why it was so short. D'oh!

I think there's enough space for both interpretations to sit together comfortably in my own listening habits. Each one has things the other doesn't have. I very much like the raw, brutal power of Poledouris' original Rome film recording, which has an intensity that make one almost forget the many performance flubs that plague the recording. Basil's conducting is also unsurpassed when it comes to the more lyrical pieces (esp. cues like "The Wifeing" and "Funeral Pyre"), giving the right dose of melodrama that Raine and the CoPPO weren't able to reproduce.

The Tadlow re-recording is however a more polished and precise reading, shedding a new light to some pieces ("The Search" is really impressive, but "Theology/Civilization" also comes to a new life) and giving the overall score a more consistent, balanced sound.

I like to have both options, it's really the best of both worlds.

I kind of prefer how Riddle of Steel/Riders of Doom sounds in the original recording, for some reason. I guess I like the mixing of the different instruments better, whereas the re-recording sounds more like a wall of sound. However, I VASTLY prefer the Prologue (Film Version)/Anvil Of Crom from the re-recording! The original recording for that just sounds so weak to me and not nearly as exciting, whereas the re-recording just blew my mind the first time I heard it and still continues to do so. They made it truly exciting music. It's differences like this that still make me undecided overall. ;)

I've thought about possibly, as a playlist, having MOSTLY the re-recording and having certain tracks from the original recording as "bonus tracks".

Being a champion of the Prometheus re-recording, second choice was a no-brainer. I feel that the re-recording actually makes Basil's writing shine (especially with the original orchestrations and Latin lyrics reconstructed), whereas given the budgetary restrictions he encountered with recording in Rome is glaringly apparent. I can see where people prefer the original due to the raw power Basil commanded at the podium, but I can't get over the numerous performance flubs and engineering present in the Rome recording.

I'm not the biggest fan of the Varese release... and even after I listened to "Anvil of Crom" dozens of times... I yearned for a bigger, more precise recording. Prometheus and Tadlow delivered that satisfaction in spades for me.

"Other" for me, i.e. the original Milan CD. Perfect selection and presentation of cues. But both the performance and sound quality leave something to be desired, so I've long since wanted to try and recreate that programme with some of the new re-recording tracks. Not sure it's doable, though.

Sure there is, I did my own version a while back for just this purpose.

D1-01 - Prologue (Film Version) / Anvil of Crom (1:02-End)
D1-02 - Riddle of Steel / Riders of Doom (:00-5:30)
D1-03 - The Gift Of Fury (3:25)
D1-04 - Column of Sadness / Wheel of Pain (4:09)
D1-07 - Atlantean Sword (4:00)
D1-09 - Theology / Civilization (:00-1:16) [Slow down by 40%]
D1-09 - Theology / Civilization (1:16-End) [Speed up by 10%]
D1-14 - The Wifeing (:00-2:13)
D1-16 - The Search (2:55-End)
D2-01 - The Orgy (2:11-End)
D2-03 - Funeral Pyre (5:15) [Speed up 1:00-End by 15%]
D2-04 - Battle Preparations / Battle Of The Mounds (Part I) (1:04-End)
D2-08 - Orphans Of Doom / The Awakening (:00-1:09) [No Change]
D2-08 - Orphans Of Doom / The Awakening (1:09-3:48) [Speed up by 17%]
D2-08 - Orphans Of Doom / The Awakening (3:48-4:24) [Speed up by 30%]
D2-08 - Orphans Of Doom / The Awakening (4:24-End) [Speed up by 13%]

I changed the speed on some of the tracks in attempt to match the original release.  If you don't want to speed up or slow down anything, just use the tracks noted with no changes.

Thanks for that, man! I'll check it out immediately. Although I have no idea how to speed or slow tracks down.

Neither, buy Flesh + Blood instead. :D

Great score (and the film is a personal favourite of mine), but it's not quite on the level of CONAN.

Is the Prometheus release a re-recording of the complete score or just a selection .

It's the complete score minus a couple drum loops.

Here's the result.

Original 1982 Recording
Disc/Cassette 1
6.     The Discipline Of Steel / Freedom Council (01:38) *
8.     Warm Welcome (02:06) *
17.     Indulgence / Mettle (01:15) *

These three are only found on the Intrada release, there are no comparable tracks on the Prometheus.

Quote

Disc/Cassette 2
4.     Warpaint (01:01) *
6.     The Defilers (05:16) *

Track 4 is essentially :00-1:04 of 4. Battle Preparations / Battle Of The Mounds (Part I) (05:59) on the Prometheus release.

Track 6 has a reprise of the Riders of Doom prior to the rest of the track.  That is exclusive to the Intrada release but the last section is comparable to 2. Orgy Fight (02:53) from the Prometheus release.

Quote

Prometheus 2011 Re-recording
Disc/Cassette 1
11.     The Tower Of Set / Snake Attack / Las Cantigas De Santa Maria * (05:21)

This track is exclusive to the Prometheus release and there is nothing comparable on the Intrada release.

It's a rerecording of the complete score as Poledouris wanted it. There are some differences between the origi9nal recording because Poledouris had to make some alterations on the spot.

True. But unless it's totally out of whack, the tempo changes aren't that important to me. It would be more sad to lose the narration at the beginning of the Milan CD. Not usually a fan of dialogue on soundtracks, but in this case, it's a tremendous "prologue" -- especially when it goes from the words "these are the days of HIGH adventure..." and then into those awesome percussion ostinati.

The only thing I'm sure about now is that I won't get the original recording of Conan the Destroyer.:eh:
