HOOSIERS

Composed and Conducted by JERRY GOLDSMITH

INTRADA Special Collection Vol. 226

For the 1986 Hemdale film Hoosiers, Jerry Goldsmith wrote one of his most endearing masterpieces — warm in its Americana, stirring in its basketball athletics and as rich in emotion as the movie it accompanies. His trumpet solos for the nostalgic Hoosiers theme rank with his finest melodic work and scoring a basketball in motion over a 7/8 rhythm is simply inspired. The expertly choreographed basketball sequences are among the highlights of Hoosiers, and Goldsmith’s surprising mix of orchestra and electronics is most prominent here, supplementing a rousing game motif with a sampled sound of an actual bouncing basketball, giving the cues a modern and effortlessly catchy rhythm. The result was an Oscar-nomination for Best Original Score.

Using the original digital mixes, Intrada worked with the entire score to make this definitive presentation. The original 1986 Polydor album featured 38 minutes, including a couple of beautiful cue assemblies (created by the composer himself that differed from the finished film edits). This album retains those unique assemblies where possible, while otherwise presenting the music in chronological order in this nearly hour long album.

Hoosiers relays a classic story — a team of underdogs emerges from obscurity and defeats the odds to become champions. In this case, it's a basketball team from an Indiana high school with an enrollment of only 161 students, who won their 1954 state championship. Teacher Norman Dale (Gene Hackman) is hired to run high school basketball in the town of Hickory after the death of its beloved coach. The Hickory Huskers’ star player, Jimmy Chitwood, has expressed his grief by quitting the team, and the townspeople are reluctant to let Dale use his own offbeat approach to coach the Huskers. Yet he perseveres to bring the team to victory.

At last! Long-awaited world premiere complete presentation of endearingly popular Academy Award-nominated score by Jerry Goldsmith to endearingly popular sports drama starring Gene Hackman, directed by David Anspaugh, written by Angelo Pizzo. Goldsmith score originates on wonderful LP with duration of 39 minutes but never appears on CD in U.S. International releases (some under U.K. title Best Shot) all have same contents as original LP. Goldsmith emphasizes rousing basketball music but, interestingly, omits several more serious ideas from his album, including one important theme represented only in this new complete version. Titled "No More Basketball", saddened cue offers haunting tune for woodwinds, strings and actually appears twice in finished film. Another important new cue is "Someone I Knew", featuring serious solo line for cello over strings as Coach Dale (Hackman) confesses tragic mistake in his past. Rich piece is darkest moment in score and brings entirely new level to Goldsmith's impressive score. Also find for first time transparent, delicate piece ("The Gym") underscoring small town team's first sights at big-time gymnasium plus rousing orchestral fanfare ("Free Shot") for regional finals. Several other new cues add additional depth as well. Goldsmith was fond of his score, even creating a couple of beautiful longer cues out of shorter ones for his original album. We have retained those assemblies while otherwise presenting complete score in picture sequence. The best of both worlds! Highlights abound in this moving musical slice of Americana but unforgettable trumpet solo playing main theme for opening & closing of score stands front & center. Intrada proudly presents entire score from actual digital session masters combining mixing talents of two legendary engineers: Mike Ross, Bruce Botnick. Project took years to develop, finally came together through courtesy of both MGM, Universal Music. A definitive presentation of one of Goldsmith's most beloved works! Jerry Goldsmith conducts. Intrada Special Collection available while quantities and interest remains!

This one of my favorite sports related scores. Happy to see the complete score available.

I strongly disagree with those who say this is ruined by the electronics, for a basketball junkie like me they make this score a true roundball soundtrack.

This is one of my all time fave sports score. It maybe all but shouting "THIS IS THE 80'S BITCHES!" But when it comes to rousing finales for a sports competition this is truly one of the best.

I have to say Goldsmith's 80's cheesy synths never sounded better than in this score. I need to get this at some point.
