indy4 155
What are your all-time favorite few works of music? Could be entire film scores, entire sagas, albums, symphonies, movements, songs, etc. I'm not going to say it can't be individual tracks, but I found that when I included individual tracks my list would have been way too long--judging a group of tracks, however you'd like to group them, is a great way to force yourself to be more selective, which I think is important in an all-time favorite list. The goal here is to exercise restraint--if you don't feel lots of pain not including some works, you're doing it wrong! Here are my picks, in no particular order:West Side Story - Leonard Bernstein and Stephen SondheimStar Wars Saga - John WilliamsRaiders of the Lost Ark - John WilliamsFirst Suite in E-flat - Gustav HolstDanse Macabre - Camille Saint-SaensFestive Overture - Dimitri ShostakovitchThe Hunchback of Notre Dame - Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz

indy4 155
Haitian Fight Song - Charles MingusGood choice! I personally prefer "Fables of Faubus," but as a trombone player I also love "Haitian Fight Song."
mrbellamy 6,281
It's hard to choose! Haitian Fight Song was my introduction to Mingus, though, so I'm partial to that one. Plus, Mingus absolutely kills it in The Clown recording, both the intro and his extended solo. It's such an outrageous piece, so different from anything I've heard before or since, jazz or otherwise.
