I mentioned this over in the Skyfall review thread, but wanted to create a new thread for discussion as the film goes through production.

Apparently, Mendes is 75% sure he'll return to direct, and is waiting for the final script to be turned in.

Craig, Fiennes, Harris, and Wishaw are all signed on to reprise their respective roles. If Mendes returns, surely we'll get Deakins and Newman again as well. This has suddenly become one of my most anticipated films.

I think it would be cool if the movie is a self-contained mission, where there'a great pre-credits sequence, then Bond showing up at MI6, flirting with Moneypenny, getting an assignment from M, and then going off around the globe to beat the bad guys. No drama about his family past, no him questioning his worth as an agent, no villains out for revenge against Bond, M, or anyone else they know

It would also be cool if, at the end, the main villain turns out to be a part of QUANTUM, and Bond 25 is about Bond trying to learn more about them during another villain's plot... kinda like the Blofeld/SPECTRE of the modern age

It would be nice if the composer and songwriter work together to create a memorable theme / song that can be used throughout the score.

Also bring back the damn gunbarrell.

Never quite figured out why either of those went out of fashion in the Bond franchise.

I still want Muse to do a Bond song. This one isn't a perfect example as a whole, but it has very Bond-ish bits in my opinion. There's even the classic half step motif in the strings:

Doing a bond score is a bit of a poisoned chalice i think...whenever one of the old bit's of music drops in ( 007 theme for example ) your just reminded of how much better that music was to what you've been listening too for the last hour !

Why can't they just get Nic Raine to do a proper John barry Vibe ?

Because Nic Raine did a terrible job on his Bond Back in Action CDs.

Yes they are. Over-orchestrated, over-bombastic, Hollywood-ised, generic tripe. I'm watching James Bond and I'm hearing INDEPENDENCE DAY.

Better than the ambient droning and aimless chopping Newman puts on paper.

Severine, Modigliani, Mother, New Digs, The Bloody Shot, Tennyson, Shanghai Drive, and Brave New World are ambient droning and aimless chopping (whatever the hell that means)?

Thomas Newman is a wonderful Composer...But skyfall sucks.......It really isn't too hard to get the feel of those Barry scores and Nic raine can be a little layered but......better that than the insipid mediocre bland generic rubbish that is skyfall..........

Too bad. I think the biggest problem with the Bond films is the constant change of directors every film. Mendes did an amazing job and it would have been nice to see what he would do as a follow up. Maybe they can bring in Martin Campbell, as his career hasn't been doing great since Casino Royale. And despite the fact that I love the Casino Royale score, I don't think Arnold is as much of a necessity anymore as he once was. While I doubt Newman would come back without Mendes, I wouldn't mind someone fresh being given a chance to score.

The thing with Martin Campbell is, while he has directed two great Bond films (Goldeneye and Casino Royale), nothing he has directed in between and since has been much to write home about (The Mask of Zorro, Vertical Limit, Beyond Borders, The Legend of Zorro, Edge of Darkness, and Green Lantern)

Mendes did a TERRIFIC job with Skyfall, but I wasn't a fan of the score at all, and I think Arnold's style will fit well into the next adventure, which I expect to me more fun and less mopey than Casino Royale and Skyfall

Campbell's Edge Of Darkness is a great film. He's not at all a bad filmmaker, rather decent with spouts of greatness.

Mendes not returning is unfortunate, hopefully the huge success of Skyfall taught them that good directors with creative freedom produce success.

Not really.

In a series where almost everything has been done ... or, thinking again, EVERYTHING has been done (if you accept space and genetically mutated villains as the boundaries for such films), a steady change of director can only help it in staying relatively fresh.

With the composer however, the last two new ones in the picture turned out relative turds, with Marvin Hamlish the last one who managed to really excel in his own thing.

Am I the only one who finds something to enjoy about each Bond score? I like some of the elements in each one. Also, both Arnold and Newman wrote great material, so I wouldn't mind them coming back at some point.

Isn't it, though? You have 22 Bond adventures, the slightest bit of change and you cry havoc. I'll also keep repeating: Fleming's Bond was more human than the films ever made him out to be, until Skyfall. It was a revelation in finally developing his character after 50 years.

The Connery Bonds managed to tell an infinite amount on the character of James Bond, and didn't feel the need to be so po-faced about it anyway.

People think the silly Bond films outweigh the more serious ones, but that was never really the case.

Skyfall shows absolutely nothing that CR or QoS, or earlier films, didn't show already.

Plus, what did we really learn about Bond in the 60s? That he likes the finer things in life and hates the Beatles? The only time that Bond's character ever really shows his personal side is in OHMSS, when he is much more human as he has been in the Craig films. Connery's Bond is good, but Craig is giving us the closets look at Fleming's creation we've had yet, and hopefully the producers don't buckle again and revert to action Bond again (I'm looking at you QOS).

I like Sunshine a lot. It's a typical Boyle, with his typical story arc of groups of people ultimately turning against each other. I thought it followed through on its concept, unlike Event Horizon which started out with a great premise but just became nonsensical. I also love Sunshine's atmosphere.

Can't imagine a Boyle Bond though. Not unless the Bond character is supposed to be completely taken apart and stripped to a primal rage.

Handheld camera, grainy digital video, no exotic locations, but the grimy parts of the world, quick cutting.

007 shoots himself in the end of course, and the queen....

So much love for Sunshine. To me Sunshine is atmosphere-less. It copies from others. A little bit of this, a little bit of that ... It lacks identity. The cast is amazingly bland, the captain most unconvincing. The ending is pure Event Horizon. Didn't really dig Slumdog Millionaire either. Love 28 Days Later.
