Mike_H at FSM alerted us to this extended interview video:

I wish they had spoken more about his air force days. A lot of that is still shrewn in mystery. At least he confirmed that he actually CONDUCTED bands at the time too, not only arranged for them.

Oh Thor! You and your JWs early years obsession!

I think he has been gushing about both for a long time. Obviously one doesn't exclude the other from being top rate, US or European ensembles, in his mind.

How nice to hear JW discuss , briefly, but precisely, the antecedents of his own musical soundscape.

Don't thank me--just reposting what was already on the main page! :)

Thank you for sharing the link to the mp3 and to the interview guys! :)

That was a lovely interview and time and again it strikes me how humble and simply endearing personality Mr. Williams is.

Is there a way to view all the digital downloads the Marine Band offers? I'd love to take a listen!

- Go to http://www.marineband.usmc.mil/audio_resources/index.htm.

- On the left, choose from one of the following:

- Some of these will lead directly to audio files you can download/stream, while the "Educational Series" site will result in a list of CDs which can be selected individually for downloads/streams of certain tracks.

I have to say videos like this makes me happy(and drunk). First of all, it is a great piece of music and I like the way he is conducting, the way he is rehearsing the (brilliant) band.

Now I'm looking forward to the new star wars scores and other music he is going to write. My fingers are grossed.

And people were wondering the double bass in the wind band. It is a tradition ( or even having two of them). It also spread to my continent, we have tried it many times, I love

the sound it gives.

Wow, there are some really great recordings on the site. I've been looking for a good recording of Michael Gandolfi's "Flourishes and Mediations on a Renaissance Theme"--so glad to have found one! And old recordings from the 1800s of Sousa's marches, Copland suites...what a treasure trove!

Yup! I pre-ordered a while back.  The entire album is already up on Youtube if you haven't heard it already, it's a really nice collection of performances of 20th Century American compositions (outside of the wonderful Williams fanfare of course, which is 21st century):

Thanks for the heads up! I'll pre-order the album immediately! :)
