indy4 160 Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 Don't thank me--just reposting what was already on the main page! There's also an article that discusses his rehearsal a littel bit: http://www.dvidshub.net/news/110079/marine-band-celebrates-215th-anniversary-with-john-williams#.Ud9VOz6PfpM
pete 1,303 Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 The Marine Band has now posted an MP3 of the piece on their site. Here's the direct link: http://marineband.usmc.mil/downloads/audio/for_the_presidents_own.mp3"Recorded by the Marine Band on July 3, 2013, in the John Philip Sousa Band Hall at the Marine Barracks Annex in southeast Washington, D.C."Can't access that urlLikewise, but thanks anyway^^
Thor 9,337 Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 Mike_H at FSM alerted us to this extended interview video: I wish they had spoken more about his air force days. A lot of that is still shrewn in mystery. At least he confirmed that he actually CONDUCTED bands at the time too, not only arranged for them.
Incanus 5,884 Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 Oh Thor! You and your JWs early years obsession!
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 11,927 Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 So he now thinks American Symphony Orchestra's are the best?Didn't he use to hype up the LSO?Insincere!
Incanus 5,884 Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 I think he has been gushing about both for a long time. Obviously one doesn't exclude the other from being top rate, US or European ensembles, in his mind.
JamieC 13 Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 How nice to hear JW discuss , briefly, but precisely, the antecedents of his own musical soundscape.
Ricard 2,491 Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 Don't thank me--just reposting what was already on the main page! Mike_H at FSM alerted us to this extended interview video:Weird...
Incanus 5,884 Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 Thank you for sharing the link to the mp3 and to the interview guys! That was a lovely interview and time and again it strikes me how humble and simply endearing personality Mr. Williams is.
indy4 160 Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 Is there a way to view all the digital downloads the Marine Band offers? I'd love to take a listen!

hornist 1,242 Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 I have to say videos like this makes me happy(and drunk). First of all, it is a great piece of music and I like the way he is conducting, the way he is rehearsing the (brilliant) band. Now I'm looking forward to the new star wars scores and other music he is going to write. My fingers are grossed. And people were wondering the double bass in the wind band. It is a tradition ( or even having two of them). It also spread to my continent, we have tried it many times, I lovethe sound it gives.
indy4 160 Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 Wow, there are some really great recordings on the site. I've been looking for a good recording of Michael Gandolfi's "Flourishes and Mediations on a Renaissance Theme"--so glad to have found one! And old recordings from the 1800s of Sousa's marches, Copland suites...what a treasure trove! thx99 1

Disco Stu 15,517 Posted April 13, 2016 Posted April 13, 2016 Yup! I pre-ordered a while back. The entire album is already up on Youtube if you haven't heard it already, it's a really nice collection of performances of 20th Century American compositions (outside of the wonderful Williams fanfare of course, which is 21st century): Cerebral Cortex 1
Incanus 5,884 Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 Thanks for the heads up! I'll pre-order the album immediately!
