Howard Shore's The Desolation Of Smaug (Hobbit Part 2)

last minute of the movie or last minute of the movie making process?

Last minute of the movie making process. You can see the sound mixing team going completely crazy over that last "reel" in the EE documentaries.

They had exceeded the film delivery deadline by 4 or 5 hours at that point and it was something like 3am in the morning when they finally locked the sound mix and the picture. Classic PJ film making. Grinds the crew to the ground and they'll thank him for it.

I hope Doug shares more trivia like this!

Trivia: 0:00 - 1:44 of #HowardShore's Beyond the Forest (#DOS) presents the original 23-m. Tauriel & Kili theme sketch, fully orchestrated. (https://twitter.com/DougAdamsMusic/status/552228791670812672?s=17)

Wish more of the opening made it into the main body of the score.

Which means Beyond the Forest isn't actually a single suite written for the elves, it's a piece comprised of multiple sketches/pieces like Ironfoot.

Cool little bit of trivia. Not a bad theme either. Great that Shore integrated that melody into the suite. :)

We knew that already :)

Beyond The Forest feels more cohesive than Ironfoot, though. It feels like one long piece of music, while Ironfoot feels like 3-4 cues stitched together.

True.

I agree with that.

The plucked strings backing is exclusive to Thrain's theme, but yes, those 4 notes at 0:16 are the meat of his theme, since obviously Erebor plays before and after it

I have an update planned for the theme list that will attempt to clarify

Listened to Thrain, the final track of middle earth OSTs I will hear for the first time :(

I love the Sauron music at the end! Very reminiscent of FOTR and gets back to the really powerful evil music of LOTR, something I thought was missing in the Hobbit. Though what we got were some kinda cool proto-bad guy themes.

Yea, I love it too. It does remind me of FOTR and also the Palantir music from ROTK

Yes although stylistically it is closer to the Mirror of Galadriel rendition of the Mordor materials than the rather violent music for the Palantír from RotK.

Right, that's why I was just saying I want to update the theme list, so it shows Erebor playing as well as Thrain's theme during that part of the track

I thought parts of the music in that scene very reminiscent of 'An Unexpected Party', when each Dwarf is arriving and introducing themselves. I guess this was intentional...a 'Dwarf Introduction' theme if you will. Thorin's theme comes in nicely, and I'm sure I caught some Beorn material in there somewhere.

Yes! And they are a call back to Moria (those three chords play in a similar way in FOTR, you'll recognise if you listen back), according to Shore.

What exact timestamp in the Moria music are you referring to?

A lot of people immediately thought of the Dwarrowdelf theme when they first heard House of Durin, but for some reason I never associate the two together in my head

If only Shore used more of that melody in the score. It's absence in BOTFA is criminal!

2:06 of A Journey in the Dark

It's those first two notes rise and then it falls, then it repeats. Like the first two notes rising for House of Durin except it continues to rise and then repeats.

Not using the CR titles

pshaw

And you hear the very different mix compared to LotR, and also the fact it was orchestrated by Pope, and not Shore. One of the few pieces where you can make a direct comparison. Especially BOTFA sometimes lacks the very clear orchestrations you are used to from Shore.

Shore's sketches are so detailed it doesn't really matter who orchestrates them.

The different orchestra, studio, recording engineer, and mixer is more to blame.

Well, also that track is mastered to sound more like BOFA than DOS.
