BLUMENKOHL 1,064
The expansion of online communities is correlated with poorer content. Certainly the inverse must be true. We should get rid of more people.

Quintus 5,391
Aww, a bit saddened by this. Jack was my favourite actor, but yeah, he's more than earned it.RIP, er... I mean enjoy your retirement.

Thor 5,273
Yeah, I wrote an article about this for my magazine: http://montages.no/nyheter/jack-nicholson-pensjonerer-seg-som-skuespiller/He's my alltime favourite actor and I've seen everything he's done except the super-obscure film THUNDER ISLAND (1963). So I was obviously saddened by the news, even though I knew it was coming. Then all the reports to the contrary have come in. I don't know what to believe anymore. But I know I should have kept my calm a little longer before writing the above article.
crocodile 6,294
I'd say Jack Nicholson retired ever since Batman. After that, he mostly did things he really wanted to do, that film set him for life.Karol

Quintus 5,391
About Schmidt was a merely curious entry in his oeuvre, right up until the little coda - where I formed a man tear. Good film.

AC1 3,565
I prefer Payne's Sideways, it's a better movie (better suited for multiple viewing) and it's less tearjerky.
Thor 5,273
Jack has always mixed 'light' comedy/drama performances with more heavy, demanding stuff, also in recent years:AS GOOD AS IT GETS ('light' with touches of heavy), THE PLEDGE (heavy), ABOUT SCHMIDT (heavy), ANGER MANAGEMENT (light), SOMETHING'S GOTTA GIVE (light), THE DEPARTED (heavy), THE BUCKET LIST (light), HOW DO YOU KNOW (light). publicist 4,484
If the buffoon turn in THE DEPARTED counts as 'heavy' i guess Pepe le Pew can be considered a demanding character, too.

I own them both on dvd because I enjoy them about equally. I have no problems with the teary content in Schmidt, I find satisfaction in it.I also liked The Pledge. He was good in that. Karol Brilliant film. The ending is a standout for originality (and went on to be a running joke in my group of friends).
Thor 5,273
If the buffoon turn in THE DEPARTED counts as 'heavy' i guess Pepe le Pew can be considered a demanding character, too.Bufoon? I didn't get that at all. I got a multilayered, dark and twisted gangster boss with certain likeable qualities. The role wasn't that big, but he certainly made the most of it and added lots to the character. In fact, Frank/Jack is the best part of that film, IMO. publicist 4,484
Jack did his great ham act (think WITCHES OF EASTWICK) and was a wonderful circus performer, so to speak, but it really wasn't a part especially grounded in the real world...and not serious at all (imho). I might challenge that with his role in WOLF, another 'commercial' movie that got a more lukewarm reception but his performance is quite accomplished and much more subtle there.
