Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire complete score discussion

I think both Doyle and Mike Newell just overdid it score-wise. Very enjoyable though.

And it was nice to hear that end credits title, always wondered why it wasn't included on the commercial album. I always liked that Doyle arrangement of "Hedwig's Theme" before segueing into the schools' theme.

Well we need all of them eventually, so it's great to have. You can't rush PoA anyway... like I was saying the other day, that's destined for next October. And once that one's out, there's a lot less to look forward to!

I was recently thinking that GoF was my least favorite Potter score, but now that I've started working on my edit of the complete score, I might reconsider. After Williams' work, it felt almost too simplistic by comparison... it's the kind of score that's big and bold and stands out when you're watching the film, but it doesn't have the nuances of Williams' scores. Still, I appreciate the fact that the music has a Williams-like level of bombast and variety, and I'm looking forward to a good listen when my edit is done.

It's cool having all those little pieces from the Quidditch World Cup, played on different instruments. That's the kind of fun stuff I love getting on these types of "releases."

1m2 is missing. I assume that's just Frank Dies from the album anyway though right?

Also damage to Cedric's Funeral and Another Year Ends is the same for everyone? I think Another Year Ends is the same as the album anyway but I haven't compared them yet.

All the files play ok for me, but when I try and open or convert them in various programs they have errors. Seems like something's wrong with the encoding.

Are there any resources out there for editing this score? Cue lists, OST breakdowns, etc? It probably won't make a huge difference in my edit, but would be good to consider.

Yeah, it seems like someone's made their own edits to it though, like adding in all those "album" versions of things, plus the tracks at the end are confusing. Also the track titles are full of misspellings. It doesn't really inspire confidence.

I don't feel the need to be as meticulous with this edit as I would with a JW score anyway, but just thought I'd check.

I assume the album versions are just that. The may have micro edits or loops. They're just presented here for the sake of completion maybe.

I assume the bits at the end to be re-recordings or inserts and Cho in Winter is a concert arrangement.

Cho in Winter appears to be Harry in Winter from the album. This is what I'm talking about, it sounds like something that whoever compiled the sessions thought would be a cute title just to avoid having two tracks called Harry in Winter.

For this one, I'm doing a pretty conservative edit, with as much OST material as possible. I'll edit in the extra material in Voldemort, The Maze, Rita Skeeter, etc. I'm also leaving out a lot of the alternates that aren't hugely different. I don't see this as a score that requires an obsessive "every note written" type of edit, just something where every cue has one representation and the whole thing flows nicely. And I probably won't leave any tracks at the end - if I want any of those inserts and such, I'll put them in the main body of the score.

Could be that they decided to change the name for the OST maybe?

Anyway, there are some really nice unreleased cues here. "In the bedroom" (laughed at the title, I am a child) is very nice but a lot of the tracks seem to have damages of some sort. Like there was a dodgy XLR lead going around (I no there wasn't but that's what it sounds like). A pity but beggars can't be choosers.

Yeah, there are a lot of audible clicks in many of the tracks, which is one of the reasons I want to use as much of the OST as I can. It's a shame. Like I mentioned, the encoding seems to have some issues too, although I'm not sure if they affect the sound.

Well, that looks the same as mine except I don't have 6m1 (only 6m1 album). And someone tacked on the OST track "Frank Dies".

Yeah, I'm the same as that.

The PU seem spotless in terms of audio so it only seems to be the main recording session which is damaged.

Goblet of Fire is a good score but a bad Potter score. It lacks the magic, the medieval flair and the sense of wonder the Williams, Desplat and even Hooper scores have. I only consider Desplats DHpart1 a worse Potter score.

Doyle wrote a score for a completely different movie. It's mainly epic bombast from beginning to end.

Concerning the complete score:

I am happy to finally being able to listen to the in my opinion best moments in the score - Hermione coming down the stairs and the entrance into the Great Hall for the Yule Ball. Doyle completely nailed it.

You can't rush PoA anyway... like I was saying the other day, that's destined for next October.

Wait, Azkaban? Next October? Tell me more!

To be totally honest, "GOF" may well be the most "mature" film of the lot, despite the latter four's cod-profoundity. Newell directs the cast well, and Roger Lloyd Pack brings a real, and tangible (and tragic!) history to his role.

The score is always delightful, and it serves the film well, but, let's face it guys: "POA" it most certainly ain't!

I thought Newell handled the Yule Ball and all the scenes surrounding it very deftly. And Voldemort's big scene at the end was just perfect - his best scene in all the films, IMO.

I do think the score suffered from having to directly follow PoA! It always takes a little while to adjust to the GoF score if you're watching all the films in order.

Fair comment, but if it took half a morning - like most school sports-days - then there wouldn't be much of a film. Besides, if Voldemort is anything, he is patient. He knew that the cup was a port-key, and he bided his time until he could get his mits on the thing.

I'm talking about the tournament. What tournament takes a whole school year to do 3 tasks?

What tournament allows to kidnap three teenagers and put them in mortal danger just so the participants would perform better under fear for their lives?
