I love science fiction but it's the genre I'm the most critical of.

Alex

The thing with sci-fi is that it's the most open of genre's. You can pretty much do anything. But only very very few sci-fi films dare to go beyond what seems comfortable and safe.

By the way, just for comparison purposes, here's AFI's top 10 sci-fi:

1. 2001

2. Star Wars

3. E.T.

4. A Clockwork Orange (is this really a sci-fi??? haven't seen it)

5. The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951)

6. Blade Runner

7. Alien

8. Terminator 2

9. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)

10. Back to the future (this is a pleasant surprise)

(they had to pick from 50 entries, and in them Jurassic Park was included. Well, I wouldn't call this sci-fi. I would call it an adventure fantasy)

All this "This is SF, this is not" stuff has gotten me thinking: what exactly is a sciance fiction film? What criteria does it have to meet? What boxes does it have to tick?

Personally, "E.T." is a love-song to a failed marriage, "RoboCop" and "POTA" are social allegory, "Forbidden Planet" is a meditation on youth, "TDTESS" (1951) is a plea for world peace, and "ACO" is an extended essay on choice, but they are all wrapped-up in the SF medium. If Stefan is right (and I think that he is)-that one can do anything within the SF medium-then what makes a typical SF film?

"RoboCop" is much, much more than that. It's social commentary of the highest order. One critic (whose name I forget) called it "a nest of Chinese boxes":the more you watch it, the more you see in it. "RoboCop" is comming true all over the world.

Because you're a replicant?

That's up for you to decide.

Well, according to many science fiction writers, the science in science fiction has to be futuristic yet credible AND it has to affect the human psyche in the story.

Is this testing whether I'm a replicant or a naturist, Mr. Prometheus?
