1. Here’s the entire list of his material. If you want to order something, you need the box number.

Quite a few titles I've never heard of...

Rocky Balboa, I have of course heard of but not in relation to James Horner? WTF?

Box 95, folder 9: Rocky Balboa

Scope and Contents: Violin score.

Cool, Henry! I can't read music, so wouldn't be of much value to me - other than to find unknown pieces, like the aformentioned. But if you can, it's no doubt fascinating.

I’m visiting L.A. for 10 days and wanted to check some of James’ materials that Sara gave to the UCLA last year:
https://www.library.ucla.edu/about/news/james-horner-and-his-musical-genius-will-live-on-at-ucla-library/

It went very smoothly and so I want to share with you how to do it.

1. Here’s the entire list of his material. If you want to order something, you need the box number.

https://oac.cdlib.org/findaid/ark:/13030/c8rv0wfj/entire_text/?query=james%20Horner%20papers

2. Then, go here and click the white/grey box beneath LOCATIONS

https://search.library.ucla.edu/discovery/fulldisplay?docid=alma9996950538806533&context=L&vid=01UCS_LAL:UCLA&lang=en&search_scope=ArticlesBooksMore&adaptor=Local%20Search%20Engine&tab=Articles_books_more_slot&query=any,contains,james%20Horner%20papers&offset=0

3. All boxes appear and you can select them individually by clicking on Special Collections Request.

You will be asked to create an account for the UCLA Library's Special Collections Request System. That’s possible for UCLA Affiliated Users and Non-Affiliated Users.

https://speccoll.library.ucla.edu/logon

The librarian said it can take up to one full workday. When requesting, you have to give a visiting date. I requested two days in advance and when I got there, everything was there. You can check the status of your requests online.

The Special Collections is located on the A level of the Charles E. Young Research Library (YRL), one level down from the YRL lobby.

I took a look at Ransom, The Pelican Brief, Searching For Bobby Fisher, Deep Impact and Beyond Borders. In most cases it was just a binded photocopy of the full orchestral score. For Deep Impact though there were a few other notes and materials. The entire list indicates scope and content of the material. Apparently there also some pencil sketches available. I’ll return on Wednesday for Flightplan and Romeo & Juliet :)

(you can only order 5 boxes per day, and it says online you have an overall limit of 25 requests)

oh, and you can take photos :)
