The Themes of Howard Shore's The Hobbit

Would have been wonderful to see Doug write about a "Thorin Is Pissed Off" theme in the liner notes. There's still hope for the book at least.

Ah yes I didn't notice it's the same as 'Out of the Frying Pan.' Could it be a variation of the 'Ancient Enemy' idea? They both base themselves on 6 note groups.

Weakness and Redemption sounds like The PIty of Gollum, and WaR is also in a lot of other themes.

Besides, I don't know why Gollum would be showing up in the Out of the Frying Pan sequence.

Yeah the choral section at the end of Brass Buttons sounds very close to Shore original take on Azog & Thorin's showdown heard in Out of the Frying-pan. I remember you were the one to point that out originally Faleel.

And yeah Weakness and Redemption seems to be in the fabric of these scores. Thorin's little motif in AUJ, Thranduil's similar motif in DoS and BotFA, Gollum, Rivendell etc.

Thranduil's similar motif in DoS and BotFA.

And its precursor in Roast Mutton/A Troll Hoard ;)

And the preceding version in Roast Mutton/A Troll Hoard ;)

It is still Thorin's motif back then! ;)

And at the end of Old Friends?

That's the Burglar Motif! Or is it? Too many darn similar ideas!

Funny thing: there is no burglar motif in The Hobbit. Never was. :)

Interesting!

This music:

Bilbo’s Burglar Theme
AUJ 1-12 Roast Mutton 4:08-4:22
AUJ 2-08 Riddles In The Dark 3:48-4:00
AUK 2-09 Brass Buttons 4:40-4:58
Sure sounds like one!
Here are BB's videos where you can see this "theme" synced to the footage that made us think it was a burglar motif

Does Shore talk you through the music and what everything means, or does he leave it with you to digest and ask questions if you have any?

We constantly talk.

Yeah after a while I have had a feeling there wasn't. :)

Or rather "expert treasure hunter" theme. ;)

It relates to the music when Gandalf look at Bilbo's map in FOTR.

I dunno what the mystery is, its a theme relating to the start of the quest for erebor, which Gandalf is reminded of when he looks at the map sixty years later.

Does he dream of electric sheep?

What about those electric sheep? That might be even more important than these things called "themes" we discuss in this thread.

Is it coincidence that the moment at the Grey Havens, when Bilbo says "I'm quite ready for another adventure" sounds similar to Bilbo's adventure theme?

I always thought the Opening to The Adventure Begins from AUJ and Journey to the Grey Havens sounded similar.

  • 2 months later...

Yeah I remember Doug mentioning it a while ago with those same words more or less.

It should be Rivendell arpeggios and Dwarven pastrami, would make a lovely dish.

I think Doug also said there is no Burglar motif. ;)

Those instances you mention from AUJ are probably something else entirely, related to Gollum and in DoS and BotFA probably to Thranduil and Thorin perhaps.

One of these days I'm going to find out what an arpeggio actually is.

Music that goes up, down, up, down....
