Not Mr. Big 4,787
I actually don't hate "friggin'" that much, just used it as an example, really. "Darn" is the real annoying one for me. Lady Dimitrescu 9,497
It's the most annoying, overused phrase in journalism today. I even told my editor once to knock it off and to stop shoehorning it into my copy.Have the words "after" or "following" become unpopular?
BloodBoal 7,542
They don't sound as fancy, and thus are not as intellectually satisfying.
Lady Dimitrescu 9,497
But one of the rules of thumb in good journalism is to keep it simple in communicating a message. Usually this is accomplished by saying a lot in as few words as possible. The phrase "in the wake of" not only violates that rule, it just sounds bloody stupid. It's as bad as "a sudden death event". Melange 448
Dear Alexander,I agree with your message.I look forward to talking with you more often.Yours sincerely,BloodBoalDear Sir or Madam,Thank you for your most illuminating post.I must say that I too am guilty of this formality, and out of habit continue to use it in texting and emails (very possibly to the great mirth of managers and businesses with whom I have contact through this electronic medium). It seems that nobody told me that the days of formal letter writing appear to have passed (or at least, on electronic communication), and I am always initially surprised to receive email communication from companies and managers to whom I sent formal contact, beginning with - "Hey" or "Hi" and my first name.Slowly but surely though, I am 'getting with the program' and improving daily. I will keep you updated regards my progress of integration into the modern world.Yours sincerelyMelange (Muad'Dib, Usul)

I'm sorry, but the fact is that someone started using this term, quite possibly even the person who coined it, and then others read it and started using it themselves. There's simply no reason for the term to exist.
