What is this really annoying habit of assigning "birthdays" to people who are dead?

What's the point?

"Happy 96th birthday to JG" (!).

Sorry, dude, he died in 2004.

They're not really dead, as long as we remember them.

  • 3 weeks later...

Classical music liner notes that talk about the pieces in a completely different order from how they are actually organised on the discs.

Why the fuck does everything now need to be "an immersive experience"?

You can't just go to a fucking concert, you need to have an immersive experience, whatever the fuck that is.

For fuck's sake.

I don't get the immersion craze either. I don't mind there being some physical distance between myself and the movie, game, or music. Plus I have some bad hearing damage in my right ear, which excludes headphones as an option for me. If I ever decide to do VR gaming, I'd need the audio to be output from the floorspeakers instead.

Sorry, I received an alert because someone used inappropriate language multiple times in a post. Is there a way to disable that?

A woman brought a baby to a comedy gig I was at on Sat night, believe it or not. Miraculously it wasn't too disruptive ... but even so, IMO admittance should've been denied and people with crotch goblins should just accept that until their spawn is old enough to be left with a babysitter, live events that aren't aimed at families are not for them.

An actor or actress thanking "God" for his or her award. So cringe.

Or when sports players do it. Like God chose their team over the other one

If that belief gave them a boost in performance that led to their victory, then maybe they do owe thanks to God. lol

I'm sure it's a common pet peeve.

Yeah they should just thank the people who got them there, and the people who voted for them, and move on.  It's not a platform for their causes

I'm inclined to think that it's a good idea for them to refrain from the political speeches not because they are inappropriate for the setting but because they are at best ineffective and quite possibly counter-productive to their causes.

Still, they don't bother me personally; in fact, I'd say I find those speeches more interesting than the usual generic ones (though that's not saying much).

Everyone thanking the academy is boring and sort of implied, and don't bang on about how impossible everyone said it would be to make the film. As far as I can tell, it's a minor miracle when anything gets made.

They should mention whoever it is who really helped them get where they are - the director, the producer, their agent... whoever, then leave.

They should be grateful though! And wear a suit!

Nobody wants to hear stars talk about politics anymore!

Did they ever?

I’ve seen exactly two celebrities who have spoken with authority about world affairs…Bono and Angelina Jolie. Whatever you may think of them, they know their stuff and have done serious work, and people who do development work know this. Every other celebrity that I can think of going off about their pet cause their agent told them to adopt sounds like a blithering idiot.

And notably, both generally steer clear of talking about US domestic politics, and neither come across a particularly partisan. Though even then, I don’t want to hear about their causes at award shows.

The best part of the Oscars is watching the fake, over the top excited reaction from the losers when the winner is announced (well, excepting Angela Bassett, of course). I mean, please, polite applause is appropriate, any more than that, c'mon, who are you kidding? You're not happy, your dreams have been crushed, and you know deep down that hack who won isn't nearly as talented or deserving as you.

Thanks! Hope to pick up my award once I’ve finished writing my acceptance speech.

Notes for speech
  • feign shock and magnanimity
  • praise agent
  • mention all the other people who’ve reached 4000 posts
  • thank Zeus, Thor and Iluvatar [omit Thor; possible misunderstanding]
  • make heartfelt plea for the repeal of the Gold Reserve Act and cancellation of the Alaska Purchase

I'm afraid the orchestra will start playing you off before you get to the Alaska Purchase.

I’ve seen some people claim that Demi Moore looked taken aback when her name wasn’t announced on Sunday…

I guess many thought it would be her moment, and that she'd get the sentimental nod. I mean, when's she going to get nominated again?
