Thanks for sharing that -- a great interview! So nice to hear my favourite director speak about another one of my favourite directors, in such a genuine and interesting way.

Why Spielberg? You know it's nothing new so why him? Why not surprise us?

Alex

To give you a chance to be vocally unsatisfied, of course.

But really, you seem to have a problem with reading posts and completely misinterpreting them lately. Reread what I wrote and you'll have your answer.

Reread what I wrote and you'll have your answer.

I guess I wanted to know why exactly you thought it was 'nice'. I'm always interested in what motivates a person. That's why I asked "Why Spielberg?". Maybe I wanted the thread to become more interesting to me, you know, since it was nothing new. Senile? No, not yet.

Oh, and while we are on the subject, what other posts have I misinterpreted lately? I'm really curious.

Koray calling early Kubrick storytelling dated while still enjoying the framing etc. And you gave a similarly scoffable excuse for that! ;)

You mean Koray calling Kubrick's storytelling dated and then calling it fantastic in the same sentence? I didn't misinterpret that at all. I just pointed out how he contradicted himself there. Anything else?

No, he expressed himself poorly. I merely tried to make him aware of that. He did not even understand the contradiction at first. And by the sound of it, neither did you.

Nice, but a "Kubrick On Spielberg"? Now that would be worth reading.

Now that would be boring. And probably understandable. With weird music.

It would be esoteric, and eliptic.

It's Strauss you're talking about, Finn!

Karol

Nonsense! It's North, all the way!

Brilliant.

I like The Shining and Eyes Wide Shut.

The rest of them is just bad and of course overrated.

Most overrated 2001 The space Mess. Try to put the 250 billion years in 2 hours and ruin all the classical pieces for me thank you. Asshole.

Lol what a load of shit.

Don't be so childish, Koray.

They say there's a thin line between love and hate, don't they?

I guess my current absolute favorites are 2001: ASO and Eyes Wide Shut. In my case, due to Kubrick's magnificent trademark storytelling(!), watching either of them actually leads to the same hypnotic experience. Kubrick demonstrates storytelling transcends story. And what he did with the classical music is brilliant indeed. Then again, I love how Kubrick uses music as an emotional counterpoint. OTOH, The Shining has never been one of my favorites but I like it quite a bit, though. Strangely enough, the last time I watched Barry Lyndon, it was a surprisingly cold experience. I wonder if the alteration of the aspect ratio (the DVD is 4:3 while the Blu-ray is 1.78:1) had anything to do with it.

Alex, what is the correct aspect ratio for "Barry Lyndon"? I always assumed that it was 1:85. Either way, it is, simply, the most beautiful colour film that I have ever seen, thanks to John Alcott!

The film is shot in 1.66:1. Blu-ray is 1.78:1. The old DVD is 1.59:1 which looks like 4:3 but has small mattes on top and below (psst, unlike the rest of humanity, I'm a sucker for 'black bars').

So...is the Blu Ray cropped?

No, of course you're right. My mistake!

Disappointing. I had higher hopes for you, but I see you're just another little biatch. Bah!

Hey, what else could he do?

Well, Alex is possesed of generally good taste, some wit, and maybe a bit of wisdom, but he seems fixated, perhaps unconsciously, on engaging in seldom inspiring but often petty disagreements over the minutiae of phrasing and semantics - "storytelling," "nothing new," "truly great," and these are only examples from recent memory. Why he is gripped by this need, and whether he can ever be free of it, is still a total mystery.

But like the wash of disinterest and guilt that can follow sex, I find myself put off by the initially satisfying pursuit of giving him a hard time. I've come to worry about genuinely making him feel uncomfortable. I was content to leave it at my "apology" and am now content to leave it at this further clarification.
