Thor 7,495
I like the prospect of this and Silvestri -- as long as he stays away from the directionless bombast he's been doing in action movies over the last decade.

Richard Penna 3,686
It's accessible in the UK Not bad, but the first couple of tracks jump around too much, and don't let his ideas breathe.

Muad'Dib 1,802
There seem to be a lot of little motifs, but they never get properly developed. My theory is that here Alan is setting up the thematic material to develop it in the rest of the releases. Of course, I have no proof of this but it's just logical thinking considering the type of score we have here.I really like the "Hercules" motif at 1:15 of The Cosmos is Yours; and the ending fanfare at Our Journey it's Just the Beggining. There's an amazing theme waiting to be explored right there! It reminds me mostly of Morricone's Mission to Mars, particuarly the usage of horns and woodwinds, but much more Silvestri styled of course.Despite the lack of a proper developed theme, it's still very impressive material. Probably Silvestri's best in a long time. My favorite track has to be Revelation of the Inmensity.
Dixon Hill 4,234
Why does it even need to have a properly developed theme? This isn't a dramatic show. I could see them taking the approach of having relatively independent musical "vignettes" since the original series used existing music to that kind of effect.Absolutely love the Kamen-esque chorale in "The Cosmos Is Yours." Marian Schedenig 8,192
4 volumes sounds good. I'll wait for the series before sampling it though. Hopefully there will be a full release of the Vangelis material from the original series someday as well. Why does it even need to have a properly developed theme? This isn't a dramatic show. I could see them taking the approach of having relatively independent musical "vignettes" since the original series used existing music to that kind of effect. The original Sagan series used several lengthy Vangelis pieces, most notably Alpha. When they were allowed to run for several minutes and in the right context, they were quite developed and dramatic. Dixon Hill 4,234
Mhmm, but what I mean is that over the course of the series each piece remained the same. Might end up being the same thing here, where there is a piece for a specific situation or idea that recurs whenever that situation or idea does, but doesn't exactly change or develop. Or it could be the complete opposite! Either way, I like what I'm hearing so far.

crocodile 8,006
Bought the lossless album yesterday and gave it one full listen. I'm actually quite torn - on one hand this is something slightly different from Silvestri, less heavy-handed and mostly quite successful. The use of electronics is quite good. And yet, the whole thing seems to be elusive so far - not many things I can remember from it. It sounds like his take on George Fenton-style documentary score and that is both good and bad. I'll investigate it further, though. He might develop things further in the subsequent volumes.Karol
Sharkissimo 1,973
I'm checking this out on Spotify. My problem with George Fenton's nature doc scores is that they're too often monumental, overly romantic, anthropomorphic and solemn, lacking much playfulness or any sense of mystery or ambiguity. crocodile 8,006
It's true, but that is simultaneously also their major strength.Karol
Dixon Hill 4,234
This has moments of playfulness, though not as much mystery or "spaceyness" as I'd like. It benefits from multiple listenings, Karol.
Henry B 50
This certainly has more of a pulse than Silvestri's other recent works.
Sharkissimo 1,973
The only track I really like is 'The Cosmos Yours' (those string harmonies). Everything is either too epic/bombastic, saccharine or dad-electronica.
Jay 37,352
I'm not really fully feeling this yet either. I've listened once at work and once while making dinner. One of the problems is that it's VERY short. Seems like just when I'm getting into it, it's all over!I am sure it will resonate with me more once I've seen the first episode. crocodile 8,006
There is a potential for something really great. I'll reserve my judgement till I hear the other volumes. Marian Schedenig 8,192
With Silvestri doing first Contact and now this, I wonder if there's a special Sagan connection somewhere? And if there is, I wonder if it's more than a coincidence that the BTTF fanfare is somewhat similar to the climax of Vangelis' Alpha, which was frequently and prominently featured in the original Cosmos. Richard Penna 3,686
Is it worth buying? I haven't decided yet.Not for me. His main theme is somewhat generic to me, and his style is a bit too jumpy for a documentary style - he never stays with one idea for long enough. It's odd because Contact was more in line with what I'd hoped for.
Marian Schedenig 8,192
Contact lacked a certain space atmosphere for me. The kind that Vangelis' music gave to the original Cosmos.
Dixon Hill 4,234
I wish some of the synthy moments like the opening of Small Moves were more present than the frankly dated 90s themes.
mahler3 478
Is it worth buying? I haven't decided yet.Your brother might be able to help you with that. This is classic Silvestri. Ebbs and flows with a really sophisticated structure that I can't wait to view with the show. It doesn't air over here until this coming Sunday.
