The Official "What Cue Would You Like Me To Mock Up?" Thread

Pretty self-explanatory. Need to continue honing my mock-up skills, and think a full scale cue is in order. What does JWFan think would be fun? Choices include cues (with some exceptions) from:

Revenge of the Sith
Prisoner of Azkaban
AI

Minority Report
The Desolation of Smaug
From ROTK, the beacon lighting
Signs
Planet of the Apes
Alien
Star Trek: TMP
Lost, episode "Orientation"

I want "The Children Leave Our Mother's House" from Georges Delerue's OUR MOTHER'S HOUSE. The album sounds tinny.

 Well that was an obscure score to suggest. Or it might be very well known to Delerue fanatics but not exactly talk of the day here.

or The Fortress of Solitude (New Start) from Superman

Don't have the score/sketches for either of those.

I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you are looking for ransom, I can tell you I don't have money. But what I do have are a very particular set of handwritten scores; scores I have acquired over several years on Pianofiles. Scores that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you mock up PLANET OF THE APES, that'll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you.

If you have a soft synth, you could use a white noise blast for the 2 horns blowing air with their mouthpieces reversed. As a matter of fan, in ST:TMP for 'The Cloud' Jerry had 4 horns reverse mouth pieces and blow air, doubled by filtered white noise from the Serge modular synth.

Yep I have more than enough synths to do that, but a lot of the sketches of that sequence are incomplete.

I think I'm going to end up doing:

Floating Office and Spock's Arrival from ST:TMP

Main Titles from Signs (those solo fiddles will be a challenge though)

The beacons from ROTK

ROTS end credits, up to but not including the throne room reprise

I did some pretty decent transcriptions of Star Trek V by ear, and that was years ago. But that was to beef up my aural skills; I'd rather just work from a score at this point, as the time required to transcribe isn't really worth it anymore.

Mmm now that would be a fun one as well. Might add that to the list.

Anyway, this is a mid-late April and beyond project. Too much other stuff happening before then.

Good answer!

I can't actually access the poor Barry-Bond stuff. What piece is it? I thought he did a passable job with "Raise The Titanic".

It's a really lousy take on 007 and Counting from DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER.

How about an "orchestrated" sequence from "Runaway"?

Isn't it possible to just transcribe the cue into an orchestral mockup, regardless of original notations? it can't get any worse than RUNAWAY the original (Casio Watch version) .

Pil, you bastard! You take us to the edge, and you leave us dangling. Damn you all to hell!

Something originally written entirely for synths adapted for an orchestra probably wouldn't translate as well as you might think, apart from the handful of parts that are imitating orchestral instruments in the original.

Agreed. The orchestrated "Building The Barn" has never sounded "right".

Follow that up with a bitchin' guitar intro, and who could say no?

  • 3 weeks later...

Had a bit of time today so I threw together the first few bars of The Hunt from POTA. Even without much finessing/humanizing, and without splitting the winds/horns over multiple samples for each "player", it's not a bad start I think.

Is it just me who reads "What Cue Would You Like Me To Mock?" every time I see this thread popping up?
I was about to suggest Lapti Nek...

Rialto Ripples from THE LOST WORLD is in dire needs of a mock-up. The beginning's covered in the Death of Ludlow, but everything from about 20 seconds onwards needs working on. One of the best cues in the score, IYAM.

Would love to finally hear that bit when Tembo loads the darts. Utterly badass.

@3:31

Better low-end here.

Ah! You've got me there...

Come to think of it, though, "Nature's Reclamation" isn't referred to anywhere in the film or on the CDs!

Edit: I meant "...or on the audio tracks of the CDs!", just in case the phrase appears anywhere in text recorded on them...

DON'T ignore this Grey, or I'll shoot you with a 'concentrated nerve agent' dart.

A couple of questions on this . . . I've done some fooling around with my own mock-ups, mostly just direct note-for-note transcription in order to break down the different parts for a better understanding of how they relate to one another. Is that what you do? Do you experiment at all? Try new orchestrations? Add your own flourishes? Or do you just want to see how it sounds when it comes out of Finale instead of the LSO?

Its usually to see how close you can get the samples to sounding like the LSO, pretty much a "training" exercise.
